SUMMARY:Focus 45: Ellen Handy\, Many Histories of Photography in One House
DESCRIPTION:For the past three years\, Ellen Handy has been conducting research at the Eastman Museum for her forthcoming book\, Histories of Photography: An Introduction\, which draws extensively on the museum's collections. Handy states\, "The George Eastman Museum is the home of the history of photography—not only because it is the home of the man who did so much to create the photographic industry and medium many of us grew up with\, or because it is the first and greatest museum dedicated to the camera arts—but also because it was here that Beaumont Newhall codified the history of photography in narrative form in 1949. From the perspective of today\, the most striking thing about the photographic medium is its multiplicity—it has many histories\, not one\, and they are all to be found under this roof." \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Rochester's Rich History: "Seven million : a cop\, a priest\, a soldier for the IRA\, and the still-unsolved Rochester Brink's heist" by Gary Craig
DESCRIPTION:In the Rundel Conference Room of the Rundel Library Building\, Gary Craig discusses his new book\, Seven million : a cop\, a priest\, a soldier for the IRA\, and the still-unsolved Rochester Brink's heist as part of Rochester's Rich History. \nOn a freezing night in January 1993\, masked gunmen walked through the laughably lax security at the Rochester Brink's depot\, tied up the guards\, and unhurriedly made off with $7.4 million in one of the FBI's top-five armored car heists in history. Suspicion quickly fell on a retired Rochester cop working security for Brinks at the time—as well it might. Officer Tom O'Connor had been previously suspected of everything from robbery to murder to complicity with the IRA. One ex-IRA soldier in particular was indebted to O'Connor for smuggling him and his girlfriend into the United States\, and when he was caught in New York City with $2 million in cash from the Brink's heist\, prosecutors were certain they finally had enough to nail O'Connor. But they were wrong. In Seven Million\, the reporter Gary Craig meticulously unwinds the long skein of leads\, half-truths\, false starts\, and dead ends\, taking us from the grim solitary pens of Northern Ireland's Long Kesh prison to the illegal poker rooms of Manhattan to the cold lakeshore on the Canadian border where the body parts began washing up. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:May It Last: A Portrait of The Avett Brothers screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen May It Last: A Portrait of The Avett Brothers (Judd Apatow\, Michael Bonfiglio\, U.S. 2017\, 104 min.) followed by a video conferencing session with co-director Mike Bonfiglio as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nFilmed with extraordinary access over more than two years\, May It Last: A Portrait Of The Avett Brothers is a deeply intimate and revealing look at the Grammy Award-nominated North Carolina band fronted by Seth and Scott Avett. Directors Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio chart the Avett Brothers' decade-and-a-half rise\, while chronicling their 2016 collaboration with famed producer Rick Rubin on the critically-acclaimed album "True Sadness\," released on American Recordings/Republic Records. Using the recording process as a backdrop\, the film depicts a lifelong creative partnership put to the test as band members undergo marriage\, divorce\, parenthood\, illness\, and the challenges of the music business. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Sergeant York screening (2017-Sep-16 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sergeant York (Howard Hawks\, U.S. 1941\, 134 min.\, 35mm) as part of the WWI series. \nAlvin Cullum York\, a third-grade dropout who found religion\, vowed to obey the commandment "Thou shalt not kill." That vow put him at odds with the U.S. Army as a conscript in World War I. Turned down twice as a conscientious objector\, York ended up being one of the most decorated heroes of the war. After years of refusal\, York agreed that Warner Bros. could make a film of his life provided that no "Oomph" girl would play his wife\, York's share of the film's earnings would be donated to a bible school\, and Gary Cooper would portray him. When accepting his Best Actor Oscar for the role\, Cooper insisted\, "It was Sergeant Alvin C. York who won this award." \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:EIO — Ensemble of Irreproducible Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:EIO was formed in 2012\, in the wake of a collaboration with David D. McIntire and bassist Brian Padavic. Over the course of this project\, the notion of an ensemble that performed indeterminate works took hold and Ryan Oldham was invited to fill out the trio. All three are composers and all contribute to the group's repertoire. While the trio often performs from notation\, all of its works are designed to be realized differently each time they are performed. Thus\, every musical outcome is "irreproducible." In the works with electronics\, earlier performances are embedded into the electronic material\, usually transformed in some way\, yet providing an imperfect "memory" of the previous experiences. With each new performance\, this material is remixed\, and while certain dimensions will remain the same and be familiar to the musicians\, there are always some surprises. In this way we hope to mirror phenomena of nature and the workings of people's daily lives. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Art Nouveau vs. Art Deco
DESCRIPTION:This new talk by Don Hall was inspired by TV's Jeopardy where the contestants were shown a photo of an Art Nouveau Tiffany glass window\, and were then asked to identify the style of art. One contestant incorrectly said\, "Art Deco" while the other two didn't have a clue. Art Nouveau was "hot" mostly in Europe from 1895 to 1910. Art Deco has a very different look and was popular in Europe and the U.S. from about 1925 to 1940. Don's program has dozens of visuals of the two styles along with wonderful examples of Art Deco architecture in Rochester. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Junction 48 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Junction 48 (Udi Aloni\, Israel / Germany / U.S. 2016\, 97 min.) as part of the 2017 Witness Palestine Film Series. \nThe combination of politics and art has become a global movement. They act as a form of activism particularly for issues such as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Junction 48 exemplifies the unification of politics\, art\, the entertainment industry\, and the millennial generation's take on issues the world faces today. The movie tells a story of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the eyes of two young lovers that share a passion for hip-hop music\, and live in the Israeli-Palestinian city of Lod. Through the music they perform\, the actors show the Palestinian community in Lod — one of poverty and crime. They show the oppression inflicted by the Jewish Israeli society\, and the ways in which they overcome them. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Singin' in the Rain screening (2017-Sep-17 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen\, Gene Kelly\, U.S. 1952\, 103 min.\, 35mm). \nIn one of the greatest Hollywood musicals ever made\, Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen are silent screen stars in the late 1920s\, on the cusp of the sound era\, but Hagen's voice presents problems for their potential fame in the talkies. The solution: A young Debbie Reynolds (in her first major role) will act as the actress's understudy and dub her voice. Singin' in the Rain spoofs the aura surrounding film personalities and has something for everyone's taste\, including delightful comedy\, romance\, stunning dance sequences\, and memorable songs. \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Gaza in Context\, Gaza Fixer: A Chronicle of Survival screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Gaza in Context (20 min.)\, and Gaza Fixer: A Chronicle of Survival (George Azar\, Raed Atharmneh\, 58 min.) \nTwo years after the onslaught on Gaza that killed over 2\,200 people\, a group of activists\, academics\, and artists have produced a new teaching video that aims at shifting the western narrative of the conflict. Gaza in Context\, narrated by Noura Erakat\, points out the historic roots of the conflict: for 70 years Israel has sought as much Palestinian land with as few Palestinians on it as possible\, and the peace process has only served as a cover for this project. Erakat uses simple descriptions to convey the reality\, that Israel now seeks to accustom Palestinians to "domination as a way of life— an unfathomable possibility to all humans\, whose first instinct is to be free." \nRaed Atharmneh is a six-time war survivor\, patriarch\, and trusted news fixer to foreign reporters covering Gaza. In 2006 he became part of the story when eighteen members of his family were killed by an Israeli bomb. As he gives aid workers and journalists tours\, he is the one who actually talks to the people\, and translates the story of their fate to the foreigners eagerly recoding\, writing\, filming\, the tragedy that Gaza has become. His colleague\, photojournalist George Azar\, has witnessed Gaza's trauma in extreme close-up and through his observational filming of Raed himself\, as well as over nine years of friendship. He captures the defining moments of Raed's life – destruction\, endurance\, humour and unimaginable loss – with remarkable intimacy. \n[source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-14]
