SUMMARY:Two Trains Runnin' screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Two Trains Runnin' (Samuel D. Pollard\, U.S. 2016\, 80 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nTwo Trains Runnin' is a feature-length documentary directed by Sam Pollard\, narrated by Common\, and featuring the music of Gary Clark Jr. The film pays tribute to a pioneering generation of musicians and cuts to the heart of our present moment\, offering a crucial vantage from which to view the evolving dynamics of race in America. In 2017 the documentary was honored with a Grammy nomination for Best Music Film. In June of 1964 hundreds of college students\, eager to join the civil rights movement\, traveled to Mississippi\, starting what would be known as Freedom Summer. That same month\, two groups of young men—made up of musicians\, college students and record collectors—also traveled to Mississippi. Though neither group was aware of the other\, each had come on the same errand: to find an old blues singer and coax him out of retirement. Thirty years before\, Son House (who had been in Rochester for years!) and Skip James had recorded some of the most memorable music of their era\, but now they seemed lost to time. Finding them would not be easy. There were few clues to their whereabouts. It was not even known for certain if they were still alive. And Mississippi\, that summer\, was a tense and violent place. With hundreds on their way to teach in freedom schools and work on voter registration\, the Ku Klux Klan and police force of many towns vowed that Freedom Summer would not succeed. Churches were bombed\, shotguns blasted into cars and homes. It was easy to mistake the young men looking for Son House and Skip James as activists. Finally\, on June 21\, 1964\, these two campaigns collided in memorable and tragic fashion. In telling this remarkable story\, Two Trains Runnin' revisits an important moment when America's cultural and political institutions were dramatically transformed. The movie is all the more pointed and relevant today\, in an era of renewed attention on police brutality and voting rights. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Feb-8]

SUMMARY:Unforgiven screening (2018-Feb-17 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood\, U.S. 1992\, 125 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series. \nAfter twenty years toiling behind the camera\, Eastwood the director finally achieved the stature of Clint the actor with Unforgiven\, a violent\, dust-choked western that revitalized a genre everyone took for dead. Unforgiven begins with a set-up we think we've seen before: retired gunslinger Will Munny (Eastwood) leaves his hog farm for one last job\, avenging a prostitute badly disfigured by a john whom the sheriff (Gene Hackman) has no interest in punishing. But as this tense and atmospheric action film winds to its conclusion\, Eastwood and screenwriter David Webb Peoples affirm the western as a complex vehicle for untangling the legacies of vigilantism\, sexism\, racism\, and institutional rot. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Feb-14]

SUMMARY:Suspiria screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Suspiria (Dario Argento\, Italy 1977\, 98 min.) as part of the Saturday Night Rewind series. \nIn 2017\, an uncut Italian 35mm print of Suspiria was discovered. According to the Chicago Cinema Society\, the print was rescued from an Italian cinema that had closed down. It had sat untouched in the cinema's storage area since 1978. "After a brief inspection to assess the overall condition of the print\, it appears as if it had only been screened a handful of times at most\," The Chicago Cinema Society said in a June 2017 blog post. "We were stunned to find that the print is a completely uncut 6 reel print with a run time of 98 minutes in Italian language." This coveted Suspiria print will arrive at The Little on Saturday\, Feb. 17. We're screening this version with live subtitling as part of Saturday Night Rewind. Plot: Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives\, late on a stormy night\, no one lets her in\, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén)\, another student\, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment\, she is murdered. The next day\, Suzy is admitted to her new school\, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises\, and often feels ill. As more people die\, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Feb-5]

SUMMARY:Documentary Attunements: From Voice to Audibility\, Pooja Rangan; Sayonara CP (Goodbye CP) screening
DESCRIPTION:On Film will present Documentary Attunements: From Voice to Audibility in the Humanities Center\, Room D featuring a screening of Sayonara CP (Goodbye CP\, Kazuo Hara\, 1972\, 82 min.\, 16mm) and a lecture by Pooja Rangan. \nIn the field of documentary\, voice\, rather than point of view\, is the prevailing metaphor for a film's unique perspective\, signaling the documentary genre's textual emphasis on spoken words\, as well as its social ethic of "giving voice." Pooja Rangan's talk will unpack the humanitarian resonances of this metaphor\, as elaborated in her book Immediations: The Humanitarian Impulse in Documentary (2017\, Duke University Press). Rangan reframes voice as an audibility: a product of auditory forms and practices such as documentary that discipline unspoken norms of speaking and listening. Her talk places documentary depictions of autistic protagonists and call center agents in conversation\, asking how the resonances among disability and postcoloniality might attune us to the complex mediations of difference involved in the production and reception of documentary voices. \nThe first film by director Kazuo Hara and producer Sachiko Kobayashi's Shisso Productions\, Goodbye CP results from their pact with a group of activist men with cerebral palsy called the Kanagawa Green Grasses: they throw off all supports of society that render them invisible to rally in the streets of Tokyo against their mistreatment\, and he keeps filming no matter what. A shy cameraman alienated by the collectivist politics of the 1960s student movement\, Hara's first film created a model he'd follow for later canonical titles such as The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1987)\, following protagonists pushing through public/private boundaries and upending conventions of documentary ethics to challenge the buried violence of colonized subjectivities. In non-sync black and white\, Goodbye CP accesses that political provocation in stark terms\, questioning its own medium and the terms of solidarity it's built upon. Two outspoken disability rights activists\, the poet Hiroshi Yokota and photographer Koichi Yokotsuka\, challenge the status of the camera as object and documentary tool\, and the human voice's dependence upon it. \n [source: On Film website\, 2018-Feb-12]

SUMMARY:Unforgiven screening (2018-Feb-20 @ 7:30 p.m.)
