SUMMARY:Rented Christmas—The Musical theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:John Dale\, a middle-aged bachelor and prominent businessman\, has a challenging job for Anne Weston\, proprietor of the local rent shop. He wants to rent a Christmas\, not just with a tree and Christmas carols\, but complete with a wife\, a family\, and all of the happiness for which he has been secretly longing. Anne hires local theater actors to play the part\, but when everyone comes down with the flu\, her last hope is to turn to the local orphanage. Unable to find someone to play the Mother\, Anne steps in at the last minute to play the role herself. A 'rented' Christmas soon turns into a new life for all concerned\, which makes this a very warm and special holiday musical. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Dec-7]

SUMMARY:Snow White screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Snow White (J. Searle Dawley\, U.S. 1916\, 73 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nParamount Pictures' first special Christmas release was this legendary and long-thought-lost version of Snow White starring Marguerite Clark\, who had played the part on Broadway. Clark's popularity in the 1910s rivaled Mary Pickford's\, but almost all of Clark's films (unlike Pickford's) are lost today. This enchanting film was the direct inspiration for Walt Disney's 1937 version\, and such was Disney's enthusiasm and respect for the earlier telling that he brought Clark to the Hollywood premiere of his film. In this 1916 version\, the interior sets were brought from the Broadway production to the New York studio and made even more fanciful. With delightful special effects and Clark's uniquely cool charm\, this film is an elegant and winsome experience. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-7]

SUMMARY:Dale Klein Post-Industrial Landscapes Lithographs and Etchings artist reception
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will be hosting an Artist Reception for Dale Klein's Post-Industrial Landscapes Lithographs and Etchings. \nDale is a painter and printmaker whose primary interest is in the post-industrial landscape of the Northeast United States as a microcosm of what is happening to our country and most of the developed world. Interested in the concept of entropy and how it affects contemporary life\, she works on the boundaries of abstraction and realism. Dale transforms her world in order to delve into it deeper emotionally; letting the viewer bring his or her preconceptions to it. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Dec-7]

SUMMARY:Het Witt Kasteel (White Castle) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Het Witt Kasteel (White Castle\, Johan van der Keuken\, Netherlands 1973\, 78 min.\, 16mm\, Dutch w/ subtitles). \nIn the second installment of Johan van der Keuken's North-South trilogy\, the rhythmic interplay of documentary sequences produces a sordid image of the First World. Segments depicting migrant laborers at work in the Netherlands\, tourists off the coast of Spain\, and disenfranchised youth outside Columbus\, Ohio\, intertwine to reveal both the effects of and the complex relationships within global capitalism. In contrast to many documentaries of its time\, The White Castle is more poetic than political. Aesthetic elements associated with the Dziga Vertov Group or the earlier\, Vertov-inspired style of cinema vérité are rejected for a formalism more akin to jazz than classical music. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-7]

SUMMARY:S. Blazier Quartet musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Swiss trombonist S. Blazier first played the Bop Shop in 2008 as a member of the improvising trio Animal Forum. Talking with him\, he mentioned he was just coming out with the first release under his own name\, Seventh Heaven on Between the Lines. We heard it\, liked it and made tentative plans to book him in the future. Although we made several attempts to connect\, we were unable to link up due to schedules. That is\, until now\, 7 years later. But in that time\, Blazier has gone from strength to strength releasing a number of strong recordings with his quartet\, trio\, a series of duo recordings (including one with Swiss proto free jazz drummer Pierre Favre) and two recordings with his group Consort In Motion\, a group that interprets pre-Bach music with a modernist's twist and included the great drummer Paul Motian as a member. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Dec-7]

DESCRIPTION:The MAG will screen The Damned: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead (Wes Orshoski\, 2015) as part of the Alternative Music Film Series. \nFrom "Lemmy" filmmaker Wes Orshoski comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk—The Damned\, the first U.K. punks on wax and the first to cross the Atlantic. SUMMARY:The First Legion screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The First Legion (Douglas Sirk\, U.S. 1951\, 86 min.\, 35mm). \n"All is not well in the hushed spaces of Jesuit Saint Gregory's Seminary. Dominated by conservative older men\, the institution is sometimes suffocating to younger initiates such as Father John Fulton (Wesley Addy)\, whose spirituality is stimulated more by music concerts outside of the walls\, than by prayer and study within. . . . Trafficking in the parochial concerns of a complex subculture\, director Douglas Sirk evokes powerful\, universal emotions with this fascinating independent production\, completed before his celebrated\, decade-long run as a director of melodramas at Universal Pictures." — Shannon Kelley\, UCLA \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:Swimming to Cambodia theatrical performance (2015-Dec-18 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:In 1983\, actor Spalding Gray was cast in the Vietnam War-set drama "The Killing Fields." This would inspire him to craft a monologue about his experiences making the film\, along with personal memories of the war and life in New York City. It would later be made as a highly-acclaimed film in 1987\, directed by Jonathan Demme. "Swimming to Cambodia" was staged by Aspie Works during the Rochester Fringe Festival in September\, with label founder Justin Rielly starring. Rielly will reprise the play for this encore two-night staged reading run of Gray's landmark work. After the December 18 performance\, a post-show discussion will follow\, with an appearance by Kathleen Russo\, the widow of Spalding Gray. She prepared the adaptation of Swimming to Cambodia being performed\, along with other stage adaptations of her late husband's work. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:White Zombie\, The Crime of Doctor Crespi screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen White Zombie (Victor Halperin\, U.S. 1932\, 68 min.\, 35mm)\, and The Crime of Doctor Crespi (John H. Auer\, U.S. 1935\, 63 min.\, 35mm). \n"The most famous horror movie from Poverty Row is nothing but a fairy tale in mufti\, pegged to a jazz age voodoo vogue popularized by William Seabrook's occult writings. Quickly produced on the cheap to exploit the post-Dracula horror film cycle\, White Zombie was sneered at for decades before its rehabilitation in the 1960s by scholars like William Everson\, Carlos Clarens\, and Arthur Lennig. An incredibly two-brained film\, White Zombie's reach far exceeds its grasp. Within five minutes its ostensible setting in contemporary Haiti is discounted as the story reels backward into realms of mythological romanticism." — Scott Macqueen\, UCLA \n"Hungarian émigré John H. Auer summoned Erich von Stroheim to New York for The Crime of Doctor Crespi\, a ragtag riff on Edgar Allan Poe's 'the Premature Burial\,' filmed on a shoestring in the Bronx. Its plot shares sexual peccadilloes with two superior horror pictures released in July\, ahead of Crespi's October bow. Eschewing the heady romanticism of Bela Lugosi's Dr. Vollin in The Raven and the Krafft-Ebing aspect of Peter Lorre's Dr. Gogol in Mad Love\, von Stroheim's equally ruthless mad doctor appears superficially more practical. Likewise motivated by sexual desire\, Crespi removes obstacles to his carnal objectives with brutal determination\, savoring the sadistic destruction of his rival while offering sly solace to the conquered wife." — Scott Macqueen\, UCLA. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-14]
