SUMMARY:Saratoga screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Saratoga (Jack Conway\, U.S. 1937\, 92 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nThis horse-racing comedy is best remembered today for the death of its star\, Jean Harlow. Only 26 at the time\, Harlow collapsed on the set of the film and died shortly thereafter. Shooting was completed with a stand-in\, cleverly shot from afar or behind hats\, and the film was released a mere seven weeks after Harlow's death. Despite the tragic history of the production\, the film became one of 1937's biggest successes. Saratoga also stars Clark Gable as a charming bookie and Lionel Barrymore as Harlow's grandfather. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:L'économie du couple (After Love) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen L'économie du couple (After Love\, Joachim Lafosse\, France/Belgium 2016\, 100 min.\, DCP\, French w/subtitles). \nFrom the director of Our Children comes the stark story of Boris (Cédric Kahn) and Marie (Bérénice Bejo)\, a couple who have decided to separate after fifteen years together. They have two girls that they adore. However\, cash-strapped Boris is still living in the family home. When all is said and done\, neither of the two is willing to give up. Now this apartment is a war zone and their situation a nightmare. Joachim Lafosse captures with great magnitude the painfully intimate\, harrowingly fascinating drama about the emotional and financial complexities of a separation and the end of a long love story. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-21]

SUMMARY:Steam Trains Return to Rochester (2017-Aug-26 @ 10 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:If you've heard of Thomas the Tank Engineâ„¢\, this is his real life cousin! For the first time since 1955\, the hills will once again echo with steam whistles when the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum hosts real steam train rides on August 19-20 and 26-27. The museum will host Viscose Co. No. 6\, a vintage steam locomotive that once operated for the American Viscose Co. in Roanoke\, Virginia. Enjoy a ride in our new open-air touring car so you can experience all the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it works hard to pull against the steep grades. Seats are also available inside our caboose if you prefer a quieter ride. Thanks to the cooperation of the neighboring New York Museum of Transportation\, visitors will be able to enjoy an extended two-mile round trip through our bucolic museum grounds. Live entertainment will be provided by banjo player Mike Kornrich. Visitors will also enjoy a live blacksmithing demonstration while they tour our museum exhibits and our large collection of historic trains. Refreshments will be available for purchase\, including a full grill menu. Our museum gift shop is stocked with many railroad souvenirs for any train buff. \n [source: Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum website\, 2017-Aug-21]

SUMMARY:An American in Paris screening (2017-Aug-26 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen An American in Paris (Vincente Minnelli\, U.S. 1951\, 113 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nGerry (Gene Kelly) is an American expatriate living the life of a bohemian painter in post-WWII Paris. Struggling to find success in both art and love\, his life is turned upside down when he meets and falls in love with Lise (Leslie Caron). This lavish musical—with its straightforward story\, gorgeous dance sequences\, and beautiful\, frequently melancholic Gershwin score—won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Kelly deservedly gets praise for his skillful and acrobatic dancing\, but it's Oscar Levant\, playing his acerbic buddy\, who steals the film and gives it a cynical edge that continues to appeal to modern audiences. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-21]

SUMMARY:Nazi Violence is Not Welcome Here
DESCRIPTION:Since the election of Trump\, the far-right has been emboldened\, calling gatherings of violence and hate. These gatherings pose a grave threat\, especially in light of the murder of anti-racist activist Heather Heyer by a neo-Nazi in Charlottesville on August 12th. Heyer is one of a growing list of people who have been recently murdered. In June\, Ricky John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche were murdered when they intervened to stop a white racist from harassing two young Black women on a train in Portland\, Oregon. In May\, African-American student Richard W. Collins III was murdered by a neo-Nazi on the University of Maryland campus. There has been a national call to demonstrate in solidarity with Charlottesville\, San Francisco\, Berkeley\, Boston\, and all other locations targeted by white supremacists. This includes Fairport\, where Richard Bradt was recently attacked by Robert Sayer\, who was reported to have attended the fascist rally in Charlottesville\, Va. We will not tolerate our community living in fear of racist\, fascist violence. We must stand together and confront these far-right individuals and groups and make them understand that the vast majority of our community does not stand for this racism and hatred. We must come together in vast numbers\, like what just happened in Boston\, that their violence and hatred are not welcome here! \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Aug-21]
