SUMMARY:In Transit screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen In Transit (Albert Maysles \, Lynn True \, David Usui \, Nelson Walker III \, Benjamin Wu\, U.S. 2015\, 76 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nIn Transit journeys into the hearts and minds of everyday passengers aboard Amtrak's Empire Builder\, the busiest long-distance train route in America. Captured in the tradition of Direct Cinema\, the film unfolds as a series of interconnected vignettes\, ranging from overheard conversations to moments of deep intimacy\, in which passengers share their fears\, hopes and dreams. In the space between stations\, where 'real life' is suspended\, we are swept into a fleeting community that transcends normal barriers\, and where a peculiar atmosphere of contemplation and community develops. To some passengers\, the train is flight and salvation\, to others it is reckoning and loss. But for all\, it is a place for personal reflection and connecting with others they may otherwise never know. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Dec-28]

SUMMARY:Day of the Outlaw screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Day of the Outlaw (André De Toth\, U.S. 1959\, 92 min.\, 35mm). \nAccording to Quentin Tarantino\, his eighth and latest film not only pays homage to that peculiar brand of the western set not in dust but in snow\, but also an even more peculiar genre of the so-called parlor room mystery. André De Toth's criminally underrated Day of the Outlaw happened to mine a similar territory in 1959: Set in an isolated\, snow-covered town in the far West\, the story has a renegade army officer named Jack Bruhn (Burl Ives) and his henchmen riding into the town threatening their worst to the men and women there. Blaise Starrett (Robert Ryan) decides to agree to Bruhn's demands for someone knowledgeable to lead them away from the law and the town\, to safety. Mortally wounded himself\, Bruhn opts to take Starrett up on his offer in one last act of generosity toward the townspeople\, sparing them the mayhem threatened by his men. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-4]

SUMMARY:Which Way Should I Go? Using a Compass
DESCRIPTION:A compass has a needle that "points" to magnetic north. It is also a tool for measuring a bearing\, the angle between north and the direction we want to go in. SUMMARY:Sympathy\, Said The Shark screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Sympathy\, Said The Shark (Devin Lawrence\, U.S. 2014\, 86 min.) with director and Rochester native Devin Lawrence. \nA young couple reluctantly answers their door during a rainstorm and in rushes a soaked\, bloodied\, and estranged friend who insists that someone is trying to kill him. This triggers a non-stop night that forces all three of them to confront their own darkest secrets as well as an even larger threat that comes knocking. We are all prisoners of our own subjective views and experiences. The majority of Sympathy\, Said the Shark is told from the explicit point-of-view of its three main characters. Every time the POV switches there is an overlap of time where we see or hear something that the previous character missed\, thus continuously changing the opinion of who's good\, who's bad\, and what is really going on… \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Dec-28]

SUMMARY:Joi gin a long (Where a Good Man Goes) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Joi gin a long (Where a Good Man Goes\, Johnnie To\, Hong Kong 1999\, 90 min.\, 35mm\, Cantonese w/subtitles). \nIn the wake of a long prison sentence\, former triad boss Michael (Lau Ching-wan) befriends a struggling hotelier Judy (Ruby Wong) and her son. Caught like so many of To's characters in a state of limbo\, Michael struggles to reconcile his identity as a gangster with the tender sentiments he develops for his new friends. Even as he is pursued by a vindictive policeman from the past\, Michael impulsively takes to the streets once again\, determined to solve his and Judy's financial troubles with the only means he knows: coercion and violence. As we watch Michael's story unfold\, we are treated to a visual feast of Macau's seedy underground. Though Where a Good Man Goes is a relatively restrained work\, it is also quintessentially To\, dwelling as it does in the space between the ordinary and the savage. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-4]

SUMMARY:Pale Rider screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pale Rider (Clint Eastwood\, U.S. 1985\, 115 min.\, 35mm). \nMarking a turning point in Clint Eastwood's career\, Pale Rider premiered at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim\, earning auteur distinction for the already seasoned actor turned director. In a loose\, metaphysical remake of George Stevens's classic western Shane\, a mining company looking to exploit a piece of land with its modern hydraulic mining techniques overtakes a neighboring camp\, threatening to steal their claims. A young girl's prayer for a miracle is answered in a man who calls himself the Preacher (Clint Eastwood) and\, as the Book of Revelation states\, "behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death." These ominous\, spiritual overtones recall Eastwood's early collaborations with director Don Siegel. An ethereal score and snow-covered mountains\, as an unlikely western setting\, compound an atmosphere of fantasy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]
