SUMMARY:Les herbes folles (Wild Grass) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Les herbes folles (Wild Grass\, Alain Resnais\, France/Italy 2009\, 104 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Filmmaking at 80 series. \nNearly ninety when this film was released\, Resnais took on a challenge he had not faced before: adapting a novel to the screen. He obtained Christian Gailly's permission to adapt L'Incident into this strange and twisty mature love story. Marguerite is a dentist and a flying hobbyist\, who has her purse stolen while trying to find the right-sized shoe. Her wallet is found by Georges\, restless in his middle-aged marriage\, who is intrigued by Marguerite's picture. Debating whether to return the wallet or turn it in to the police\, Georges finally meets Marguerite\, but the tact and protocol of appreciation elude him\, despite being drawn to her. Resnais's use of color highlights this story of chance meetings. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:A Dry White Season screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Dry White Season (Euzhan Palcy\, U.S. 1989\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Black Female Filmmakers series. \nEuzhan Palcy has been a trailblazer in many ways—among them\, she was the first black director to win a César Award (the French equivalent of the Oscar) and the first black director to direct an actor to an Academy Award nomination. That nomination was for Marlon Brando in this film\, after he agreed to come out of his self-imposed retirement and work for free. In 1970s South Africa\, a teacher and his wife (Donald Sutherland and Susan Sarandon) find out the true cost of Apartheid when their gardener's son is detained and killed by the police following a peaceful demonstration about education reform. Taking the case to court\, the teacher hopes to find justice for the boy\, but when the entire system works against him\, he takes matters into his own hands. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-11]

SUMMARY:Don't Be Nice screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Don't Be Nice (Max Powers\, U.S. 2018\, 95 min.) as part of the The Black Cinema Series. \nThe upstart Bowery Slam Poetry Team\, made up of five African-American\, Afro-Hispanic and queer poets in their 20s\, prepares for the national championships. Mentored by a demanding coach who encourages them to push past their personal boundaries and write from a place of vulnerability\, pain and honesty\, the poets break down\, break through and compose their best work ever. Timely and difficult\, their spoken word slays—but will these soul-searching pieces about police violence and the whitewashing of Black culture be able to compete against choreographed crowd-pleasers for the title? Will opting to make a statement instead of a show spell their defeat? \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Feb-11]

SUMMARY:Ahlat Agaci (The Wild Pear Tree) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ahlat Agaci (The Wild Pear Tree\, Nuri Bilge Ceylan\, Turkey/Republic of Macedonia/France/Germany/Bosnia and Herzegovina/Bulgaria/Sweden 2018\, 188 min.\, DCP\, Turkish w/subtitles). \nAspiring writer Sinan returns home after university hoping to scrape together enough money to publish his first novel. He wanders the town encountering old flames and obstinate gatekeepers and finds his youthful ambition increasingly at odds with the deferred dreams of his gambling-addict father. As his own fantasies mingle with reality\, Sinan grapples with the people and the place that have made him who he is. Following in the great tradition of family dramas like Death of a Salesman and Long Day's Journey Into Night\, The Wild Pear Tree weaves an evocative tale of creative struggle and familial responsibility with inspired performances\, sumptuous imagery\, and surprising bursts of humor. It's one of Ceylan's most personal works to date\, a film as rich\, layered\, and uncompromising as the novel its headstrong hero is working to publish. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-11]

SUMMARY:Rochester's Rich History: "The Rochester Water Works Companies\, 1835-1872"\, Morris A. Pierce
DESCRIPTION:"Rochester Water Works Companies\, 1835-1872" covers the attempts by two companies of that name to supply water to the City of Rochester. The second company was incorporated in 1852 and after several false starts received a contract from the Rochester Common Council in 1866 to distribute Hemlock Lake water throughout the city for domestic use and fire protection. The company's engineer\, Daniel Marsh\, was very competent\, but the firm's president\, Alexander Easton\, had little experience with water works and\, when costs became an issue\, chose to utilize local resident Isaac S. Hobbie's wood stave pipe for the seventeen-mile conduit to Rochester. Although Hobbie's pipe was to prove very successful on later projects\, the combination of inexperience and bad luck resulted in the $1.6 million project becoming one of the most spectacular failures in the history of American water systems. The city ended up paying the company $26\,000 for their property in March of 1882\, six years after a city-owned system successfully delivered Hemlock Lake water through a wrought-iron conduit. The story of this failed project sheds helpful light on the state of American engineering and manufacturing after the Civil War\, making it a useful contribution to these fields. \n [source: Monroe County Library calendar\, 2019-Feb-13]

SUMMARY:Bathtubs Over Broadway screening (2019-Feb-16 @ 3 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Bathtubs Over Broadway (Dava Whisenant\, U.S. 2018\, 87 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nWhen he started as a comedy writer for the Late Show With David Letterman\, Steve Young had few interests outside of his day job. But while gathering material for a segment on the show\, Steve stumbled onto a few vintage record albums that would change his life forever. \nBizarre cast recordings – marked "internal use only" – revealed full-throated Broadway-style musical shows about some of the most recognizable corporations in America: General Electric\, McDonald's\, Ford\, Dupont\, Xerox. Steve didn't know much about musical theater\, but these recordings delighted him in a way that nothing ever had. \nBathtubs Over Broadway follows Steve Young on his quest to find all he can about this hidden world. While tracking down rare albums\, unseen footage\, composers and performers\, Steve forms unlikely friendships and discovers that this discarded musical genre starring tractors and bathtubs was bigger than Broadway. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Nuts and Bolts Comedy Improv (2019-Feb-16 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Since 2000\, Nuts and Bolts has been making Rochester laugh. Started by two High School friends who were tired of just making each other laugh\, Nuts and Bolts is an ensemble show with something for everyone. Their chosen style of short-form improvisational comedy allows them to customize each show to the venue and the audience. They encourage audience participation\, taking suggestions to determine the theme and subject matter of the individual sketches. Everything you see is 100% improvised. The result is sometimes humorous\, sometimes chaotic\, but always entertaining. \n [source: Comedy @ the Carlson website\, 2019-Feb-11]

SUMMARY:Broadway Danny Rose screening (2019-Feb-17 @ 4 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Broadway Danny Rose (Woody Allen\, U.S. 1984\, 84 min.\, 35mm) as part of the L'chaim: Celebrating Jewish Life series. \nIn a film that exults in the tradition of Jewish storytelling\, Woody Allen added an extra air of authenticity by casting several revered comics\, his own manager\, and the owner of the Carnegie Deli as themselves. Allen\, Mia Farrow\, and Nick Apollo Forte star in this black-and-white comedy about a love triangle and a jilted gangster. Danny Rose (Allen) is a dedicated and hapless New York talent agent who represents a washed-up lounge singer\, Lou Canova (Forte)\, who is finally making a comeback. Lou convinces Danny to accompany his mistress\, Tina Vitale (Farrow)\, as her beard at an important gig at the Waldorf so that she can attend without raising the suspicions of his wife. After Tina's jealous ex-boyfriend mistakes Danny for her real boyfriend\, trouble ensues. Roger Ebert praised the performances of the three main actors as "wonderfully off-the-wall characterizations" in one of Woody Allen's best comedies of errors. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-14]

SUMMARY:Mamele screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Mamele (Joseph Green\, Konrad Tom\, Poland 1938\, 97 min.\, DCP\, Yiddish w/subtitles) as part of the L'chaim: Celebrating Jewish Life series. \nMolly Picon\, the "Queen of the Yiddish Musical\," shines as Mamele (the little mother)\, the dutiful daughter keeping her family intact after the death of their mother. She's so busy cooking\, cleaning\, and matchmaking for her brothers and sisters that she has little time for herself—until she discovers the violinist across the courtyard. Following the success of Yiddle With His Fiddle (Yidl mitn fidl\, 1936)\, Picon and director Joseph Green teamed again for this film\, which\, like Yiddle\, was shot in Poland. Set in á´Œódź\, this musical comedy drama embraces the diverse gamut of interwar Jewish life in Poland\, including no-goodniks and the unemployed\, nightclubs and gangsters\, and religious Jews celebrating Sukkot. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-11]
