SUMMARY:Ziemia obiecana (The Promised Land) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ziemia obiecana (The Promised Land\, Andrzej Wajda\, Poland 1975\, 179 min.\, DCP\, Polish w/subtitles) as part of A Century of Polish Independence series. \nBased on the 1898 novel by the Nobel Prize winner Wladyslaw Reymont\, the film is set in the fast-growing industrial city of Lódz. It focuses of the experiences of three young men\, a Pole\, a German\, and a Jew\, who work together to fulfil their dream of building a textile factory. Their gambit is successful beyond their dreams\, but it extracts a high price from each of them. The film portrays the end of the romantic era in the Polish territories\, the loss of traditional values\, and the triumph of uncouth and dynamic nineteenth-century capitalism. Lódz\, the land of promise for many\, means destruction for others. Regularly counted among the greatest Polish films ever made\, The Promised Land won Wajda numerous awards at prestigious festivals and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]

SUMMARY:Naila and the Uprising screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Naila and the Uprising (Julia Bacha\, U.S. / Palestine 2017\, 77 min.) followed by a videoconference discussion with Daniel Nerenberg as part of the 2018 Witness Palestine series. The film will be preceded by I Was Living Here (U.S. 2018\, 5 min.) \nThe film revolves around the tragic and remarkable story of Naila Ayesh\, an active student organizer in Gaza in the 1980s. When a nation-wide uprising breaks out in the Occupied Palestinian Territories\, Naila must make a choice between love\, family\, and freedom. Undaunted\, she embraces all three\, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time. Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines\, whose stories weave through the most vibrant\, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history — the First Intifada in the late 1980s. While the First Intifada provides the backdrop for Naila and the Uprising\, its lessons transcend that particular time and place. Through the experience of countless women engaged at all levels of society\, we learn what is possible when women take the lead in struggles for rights and justice — from a movement's inception to peace talks — and what we lose when they are stripped of their roles. In Naila and the Uprising we see how women-led civil resistance can stir the masses\, put pressure on power-holders\, and affect real structural change. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]
