SUMMARY:Pee-wee's Big Adventure screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pee-wee's Big Adventure (Tim Burton\, U.S. 1985\, 90 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Dryden Kids series. \nIn the strange and wonderful story of a man-child in search of his beloved bicycle\, Paul Reubens introduced movie audiences around the world to one of the iconic figures of the 1980s\, Pee-wee Herman. First-time feature director Tim Burton and co-writers Reubens and Phil Hartman craft a narrative and emotional atmosphere that secretly recall the neorealist classic The Bicycle Thief. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:Local Vocal Americana Concert
DESCRIPTION:Local Vocal was established to give local singers an opportunity to showcase programs of song that have reached classic status. That doesn't necessarily mean only "classical music" (such as opera and art song)\, but also includes deservedly popular music theatre songs and lighter operetta fare. The song repertoire grows as time passes\, and once cutting-edge shows like Wicked and Sweeney Todd have become classics in their own right. A concert comprised of American songs sweeps the decades to pick up a cute patriotic ditty like I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy as well as music from shows set in the heartland of small town America – Carousel in Maine\, Show Boat on the ol' Mississippi\, State Fair in Iowa\, and traversing from Neverland to The Tender Land. For many it will be a trip down memory lane\, and yet also a revelation of some wonderful songs that are rarely heard. Well-known Rochester soprano and Eastman Community Education teacher Cecile Saine directs Local Vocal in "Americana"\, providing continuity in a diverse program accompanied by pianist Alla Kuznetsov. Local Vocal is one of Rochester Lyric Opera's musical outreach programs\, providing opportunities to talented performers of all ages who call this area home\, and thus the personnel of Local Vocal shifts from concert to concert. This performance will include regional professional singers alongside high school and adult amateur voice students. In addition\, the Lyric Theatre's own middle-school choir\, Lyric Voices\, will open with a charming set from the new musical\, Finding Neverland. \n [source: Lyric Theatre e-mail\, 2017-Feb-23]

SUMMARY:Mostly Other People Do The Killing musical performance
DESCRIPTION:It's hard to believe that Mostly Other People Do The Killing (henceforth referred to as MOPDtK) have been together since 2003 and have been releasing recordings since 2005. (a dozen at last count.) Starting as a quartet (leader Moppa Elliott — bass\, John Irabagon — reeds\, Peter Evans — trumpet and Kevin Shea — drums) they've been through several personnel shifts\, occasionally adding members. At one point they were up to a septet. But no matter the size\, the band has always maintained its distinct freewheeling approach\, high level musicianship\, complex yet accessible compositions and musical antics that have made them so popular. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention: Strategies for Helping Yourself and Those You Care About
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. The goal of suicide prevention is to reduce factors that increase someone's risk for a suicide attempt (e.g.\, depression) and also to increase factors that promote resilience and coping (e.g.\, social connectedness). In this presentation\, we will combat stigma by talking about this important topic. We will discuss facts and myths about suicide and emphasize strategies we can all take to reduce our risk and help reduce the risk of those we care about. An informational program will be presented by Kimberly Van Orden\, PhD\, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry\, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. \n [source: Mental Health Association e-mail\, 2017-Jan-9]

SUMMARY:A Midsummer Night's Dream screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Midsummer Night's Dream (George Balanchine\, Dan Eriksen\, U.S. 1967\, 93 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Choreography for Camera series. \nA film recording of a famous 1962 two-act ballet choreographed by George Balanchine\, one of the most celebrated choreographers of our time\, based on the Shakespeare comedy. The ballet\, through its themes of reality versus illusion\, and change versus constancy\, displays love in all its guises. In the first act there are dances of unrequited love and love that is reconciled. There is a pas de deux for the Fairy Queen Titania and Bottom\, who has been turned into an ass—a perfect illustration in dance of the old proverb\, "love is blind." In the second act\, which opens with Mendelssohn's familiar Wedding March\, there is a pas de deux representing ideal\, untroubled love. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:Die innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Squeaky Wheel will screen Die innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In\, Christian Petzold\, Germany 2000\, 106 min.) \n[…]The State I Am In depicts a teenager (Julia Hummer) who travels back to Germany with her fugitive parents (Barbara Auer\, Richy Müller)\, former terrorists in need of money. For 15 years now\, the parents have been leading an underground existence\, hiding among the anonymous tourists on the beaches of Portugal. They have broken a taboo: they have conceived a daughter. A girl who has never swapped clothes with her friends\, never skipped classes in school\, camped out at lakes\, got drunk and broken off with her boyfriend in ice-cream parlours. A girl who is alone. The parents are just about to establish some sort of legal identity for themselves in Brazil\, when a slight negligence causes everything to fall apart around them. And again they are on the run\, which brings them back to Germany. Meanwhile\, their daughter has fallen in love. A love which will lead to a tragedy and destroy the family. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:Death Mills\, Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Death Mills (Billy Wilder\, U.S. 1945\, 22 min.\, 16mm)\, and Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog\, Alain Resnais\, France 1956\, 32 min.\, 16mm\, French w/subtitles) in a program titled Holocaust: Affect and Absence. On Death Mills: \nOriginally made with a German soundtrack for screening in occupied Germany and Austria\, this film was the first documentary to show what the Allies found when they liberated the Nazi extermination camps: the survivors\, the conditions\, and the evidence of mass murder. The film includes accounts of the economic aspects of the camps' operation\, the interrogation of captured camp personnel\, and the enforced visits of the inhabitants of neighboring towns\, who\, along with the rest of their compatriots\, are blamed for complicity in the Nazi crimes—one of the few such condemnations in the Allied war records. \n On Night and Fog: \nTen years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps\, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust\, Night and Fog contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps' quiet\, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man's violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-20]
