SUMMARY:Om Shanti Om screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Om Shanti Om (Farah Khan\, India 2007\, 162 min.\, 35mm\, Hindi and Urdu w/subtitles) as part of the Stories of Indian Cinema: Abandoned and Rescued series. \nMusic! Romance! Drama! Suspense! The greatest box office triumph in the history of Indian cinema at the time of its release is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Bollywood in its most popular and beloved form. Spanning three decades—from the 1970s to the new millennium—this cinematic extravaganza is about the magic of love\, filmmaking\, and reincarnation. Directed by the most acclaimed female director and choreographer of the Indian film industry of modern times\, the film stars screen legend Shah Rukh Khan and features no less than 42 celebrities in the musical set piece of the film's climactic sequence. Its sources of inspiration are two classics: Bimal Roy's Madhumati (1958) and Rishi Kapoor's Karz (1980); Kapoor himself is seen dancing in the opening sequence of this exhilarating tribute to cinematic illusion. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:Bill Kirchen's Honky Tonk Holiday Show (2017-Dec-7 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Forget the Nutcracker and Handel's Messiah. For a real taste of seasonal cheer\, nothing says joy to the world like Bill Kirchen singing Daddy's Drinkin' Up Our Christmas. The Too Much Fun annual Honky Tonk Holiday Tour stops at the Lovin' Cup Bistro and Brews on Thursday\, December 7 at 8 pm. Featured is a sleigh-full of rarely heard holiday numbers from the blues\, rock 'n' roll and honky tonk bags: Silent Surfin' Night\, Truckin' Trees for Christmas\, Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy and many more. SUMMARY:Nocturama screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Nocturama (Bertrand Bonello\, France/Germany/Belgium 2016\, 130 min.\, DCP\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Primal Screen series. \nParis\, the present. A group of adolescents methodically prepares a series of terrorist attacks in the French capital. The very idea of producing a film on a subject like this at a time when the world is struggling with political violence is controversial in itself\, but director Bertrand Bonello—who directed the equally contentious 2014 biopic about Yves Saint Laurent—pushes the challenge even further by staging the events with the geometric mise-en-scène of a Stanley Kubrick work or with the aplomb of a George Romero horror story. The Shining\, Dawn of the Dead\, and a constellation of other cinematic references make this thriller a highly divisive yet compelling exercise in style\, confronting the viewer's expectations in an elegant\, visceral\, and unsettling moral tale. It could have been conceived by Robert Bresson\, but it will keep you at the edge of your seat. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:And\, Ain't I a Woman: A Long Table Conversation/Installation
DESCRIPTION:As New York state celebrates 100 years of women's suffrage\, "At the Crossroads: Activating the Intersection of Art and Justice" announces its second event of the 2017-2018 season\, "And\, Ain't I a Woman: A Long Table Conversation and Installation\," inspired by the fierce legacy of Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth was born a slave in New York in 1797\, twenty-one years after women lost the right to vote in the state in 1776. She was to become an outspoken advocate for abolition as well as civil and women's rights. More than a century before Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced the concept of intersectionality to feminist theory in the 1980s\, Sojourner Truth challenged sexist + racist notions with her extemporaneous "And\, Ain't I a Woman" speech in 1851 at the National Women's Convention in Akron\, Ohio. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:Family Plot screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Family Plot (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1976\, 120 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Hitchcock in Winter series. \nIn Hitchcock's droll and delightful final film\, Bruce Dern returned to work for the master of suspense (after having appeared in Marnie and two episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour). Dern plays a cab driver turned detective\, who\, along with his phony-psychic girlfriend\, is hot on the trail of a couple of kidnappers. The entire cast delivers sly and witty performances in this tongue-in-cheek thriller that plays as both a compelling mystery and a brilliant parody of Hitchcock's own films. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]
