SUMMARY:The Blacks: A Clown Show theatrical performance (2017-May-13 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Blackfriars Theatre will host a performance of The Blacks: A Clown Show by Jean Genet. \nA troupe of black actors reenact the rape and murder of a white woman before a kangaroo court and thus begins The Blacks: A Clown Show a play that examines racism and oppression through the ritualistic reenactment of a murder where all the participants are played by black actors — even the white characters. Written by Jean Genet at the request of a black actor\, The Blacks "flows as freely as an improvisation\, with fantasy\, allegory and intimations of reality mingled into a weird\, stirring unity…Genet's investigation of the color black begins where most plays of this burning theme leave off." —Howard Taubman\, New York Times \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2017-May-1]

SUMMARY:Splendor in the Grass screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Splendor in the Grass (Elia Kazan\, U.S. 1961\, 123 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nIn small-town Kansas\, 1928\, lower-middle class Deanie (Natalie Wood) is fatally in love with college-bound scholar Bud (Warren Beatty's remarkable debut). As their relationship deteriorates\, Deanie's methods of seduction turn extreme and lead her toward a nervous breakdown. Kazan's complex and compelling psychosexual drama is one of the screen's quintessential depictions of the malaise and confusion of American youth. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-May-8]

SUMMARY:Hinkley musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Excellent\, deceptively mellow\, complex rock-and-roll from Hinkley will perform at Three Heads Brewing. \nHinkley is coming back to the Beer Garden to celebrate the vinyl Release of their new record "Peak of Light". Hinkley is a hard-working band from Rochester\, NY. They play pop music\, which is sometimes country\, sometimes psychedelic\, sometimes quiet and sometimes loud. Hinkley thinks it is important to play songs that convey a meaning. They've been described as genuine\, timeless and sincere and we agree. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-May-8]

DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino\, U.S. 1992\, 99 min.) as part of the Saturday Night Rewind series. \nA group of thieves assemble to pull of the perfect diamond heist. It turns into a bloody ambush when one of the men turns out to be a police informer. As the group begins to question each other's guilt\, the heightening tensions threaten to explode the situation before the police step in. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Breakfast at Tiffany's (Blake Edwards\, U.S. 1961\, 115 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nIn her most cherished performance\, Audrey Hepburn stars as Truman Capote's heroine Holly Golightly in one of the most enduring of Hollywood romances. SUMMARY:Take Your Mom For a Walk this Mother's Day
DESCRIPTION:On April 13\, the U.S. dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb in history on a remote and yet still populated area of Afghanistan. To make real to ourselves what may feel like one more news story\, and to acknowledge the consequences of war and weapons on mothers and their children in other parts of our mother earth\, we will walk on Mother's Day Sunday\, May 14 2-5 tracing the size of that crater. This will be a six mile walk around the circumference of the "blast site" sketched over Rochester\, starting at Gandhi Institute. We will walk starting around 2 p.m. and conclude by 5 pm\, rain or shine. Strollers and bikes are welcome. Walkers are welcome to walk in silence or to participate in facilitated dialogue with family\, friends and strangers as part of the journey. \n [source: M.K. SUMMARY:The 100 Years Show screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The 100 Years Show (Alison Klayman\, U.S. 2015\, 30 min.) followed by a Panel Discussion with Debrorah Ronnen\, and Rachel Haidu. \nCarmen Herrera sketches by the window of her New York City apartment every morning. She is coming up on her 100th birthday and is bound to a wheelchair\, but she still vibrates with the energy of a much younger woman. At midday most days she treats herself to a scotch. Then she returns to her work. Her canvases are radiant and disciplined\, straight lines and shapes in just two colors. She has been painting since her youth in Cuba\, but it was only in the last few years that she found recognition. In the last decade\, major institutions from MoMA to Tate Modern have acquired her paintings. London's The Observer called Carmen the "discovery of the decade\," and her work is now acknowledged as a precursor to many modernist styles—minimalism\, geometric and modernist abstraction\, and concrete painting. Central to Carmen's work is a drive for formal simplicity and a striking sense of color. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-May-8]

SUMMARY:Destinacija_Serbistan (Logbook_Serbistan) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Destinacija_Serbistan (Logbook_Serbistan\, Želimir Žilnik\, Serbia 2015\, 94 min\, DCP\, various languages w/subtitles) with filmmaker Želimir Žilnik in person. \nBefore the recent European migrant drama exploded into a humanitarian disaster that was consequently exploited by both media and politicians\, the ever-watchful Želimir Žilnik noticed something amiss in his native Serbia: a sudden increase of migrants from war-torn and poverty-stricken areas of North Africa and the Middle East. Unlike several other films and news reports on the same subject\, which chose to see migrants as an anonymous horde that should either be pitied or feared\, Žilnik provides ample space for individuals to introduce themselves and display their values\, so that the viewers can identify with them and begin to understand their struggles. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-May-8]

SUMMARY:Melanie musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Melanie\, who became the voice of an era in one magical instant onstage at Woodstock\, has been putting the pieces in order. Pieces of a career\, scattered by the winds of experience and assembled again by the force of love into the most personal and brilliant moments of her musical journey. Melanie is poised to enlighten new generations about what it means to sing with both passion and eloquence\, to write at once with intelligence and emotion\, and to inspire through song… and nobody does this better than Melanie. Others learned this that night at Woodstock\, where as a New York kid barely known outside of the coffeehouse circuit in Greenwich Village\, she sang her song "Beautiful People" and inspired the first panorama of candles and cigarette lighters ever raised at a concert event. That\, in turn\, moved the young singer to write "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain")\, which sold more than one million copies in 1970 and prompted Billboard\, Cashbox\, Melody Maker\, Record World\, and Bravo to anoint her as female vocalist of the year. Her single "Brand New Key\," an infectious romp about freedom and roller skates\, topped the charts in 1971. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2017-May-8]
