SUMMARY:Violet performance (2015-May-3 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:As a girl\, Violet was involved in a tragic accident leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved\, she's traveling across the deep south in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist that she hopes can make her beautiful. The scars lie deeper than the skin – but on the bus journey her fellow riders\, including a young African-American solider teach her about beauty\, love\, courage\, and what it means to be an outsider. With a score of show-stopping anthems ranging from American roots to folk to gospel\, Violet is a thought provoking musical that challenges you to look beyond the surface. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:Captain Celluloid vs. the Film Pirates screening
DESCRIPTION:Today's Senior Matinee at 1:30 p.m. at the Dryden is Captain Celluloid vs. the Film Pirates (Louis Mcmahon\, U.S. 1969\, 56 min.\, 16mm). \nAn affectionate pastiche of the cinema serial\, complete with masked heroes and villains\, plentiful chases\, fisticuffs\, and three full blown cliffhangers. When the lost negative of the uncut version of Greed is found\, the Association of Film Distributors donates it to the Film Museum in Rochester. En route\, it is intercepted and copied by the Master Duper—a sinister master criminal whose aim is to have a dupe negative of every motion picture classic and "make a fortune selling prints to film societies and private collectors all over the world." The next time the Master Duper's gang attempt an interception\, they are thwarted by Captain Celluloid but manage to escape. The Master Duper offers a print of Greed to D.W. Hart\, the head of the Classic Film Society. Captain Celluloid interrupts the transaction at a secret film store on an old barge\, and in the ensuing fight\, a gunshot sets off a nitrate fire from which the Captain barely escapes. Eventually Captain Celluloid follows the Master Duper to his lair for a final showdown. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington\, DC (1980-90) screening
DESCRIPTION:At 8 p.m.\, the Cinema will screen Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington\, DC (1980-90) (Scott Crawford\, U.S. 2014\, 102 min.) \n"Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington\, DC (1980-90)" examines the early DIY punk scene in the Nation's Capital. It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains\, Minor Threat\, Government Issue\, Scream\, Void\, Faith\, Rites of Spring\, Marginal Man\, Fugazi\, and others released their own records and books their own shows without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. Contextually\, it was a cultural watershed that predated the alternative music explosion of the 1990s (and the industry's subsequent implosion). Thirty years later\, DC's original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth\, the power of community and the strength of conviction. Dir/Scr/Prod Scott Crawford; Prod Jim Saah. U.S.\, 2014\, color\, 102 min. Starring Dave Grohl\, Henry Rollins\, Ian Mackaye\, Thurston Moore\, Fred Armisen\, J. Mascis and J. Robbins. Proceeds from the event will benefit Girls Rock! Rochester\, a non profit summer camp focused on the empowerment of young girls and trans youth through rock and roll! SUMMARY:Dangermuffin
DESCRIPTION:Dangermuffin can no longer be plainly dubbed an Americana or roots-rock band. Behind the virtuosic rhythms of drummer Steven Sandifer\, the group seamlessly segues from calypso to world beat to a down-home shuffle\, often within the same song. When guitarist Mikie Sivilli steps in with a powerful slide-driven lead\, one might even venture to call it Southern rock. But by the time songwriter Dan Lotti sings the first words of another verse with his unmistakeable light rasp\, the listener is undeniably back on the beach\, pondering both the world's pleasures and ills through sandy toes. \n [source: Abilene website\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (MiloÅ¡ Forman\, U.S. 1975\, 133 min.\, 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m. \nBefore emerging as one of the defining American actors of the late 20th century\, Michael Douglas produced this Academy Award—winning screen adaptation of Ken Kesey's 1962 novel about life inside a mental institution. Jack Nicholson stars as the witty con man who finagles his way out of his prison work detail by convincing the guards that he is insane. His plan goes awry\, however\, when he meets Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher)\, whose chilling self-righteousness drives her charges into submission. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:Citizen Kane screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Citizen Kane (Orson Welles\, U.S. 1941\, 119 min.\, 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m. \nOrson Welles\, born 100 years ago today\, stars as Charles Foster Kane in his classic first feature\, a thinly disguised interpretation of the life of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. The 25-year-old director took complete advantage of the freedom given to him by RKO Studios\, breaking narrative and visual conventions while blazing new paths along the way. Welles also won an Academy Award for his screenplay\, an honor shared with Herman J. Mankiewicz. Kane is still influencing filmmakers to this day\, and is considered by many critics and audiences to be the greatest film ever made. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:Union to Stage Rally at the Rochester-Genesee Regional Transit Authority
DESCRIPTION:Rochester\, NY: On Thursday\, May 7\, 2015\, members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 282 and their supporters will rally at the RGRTA headquarters this Thursday protesting the decisions made by CEO Bill Carpenter that will cost 144 workers their jobs\, and leave the Rochester City School District trying to figure out transportation for 9\,000 students to and from school as of July 1st of this year. The decision by Bill Carpenter to pull the plug on busing city school students came without a vote from the board\, and is heavily contested by the school district and the workers who are employed by the RGRTA. Carpenter defended his decision as a resolution to recent violence in the downtown transit center. "It goes without saying that ATU Local 282 Executives and members want to see an end to violence at the Transit Center\," says Local 282's President\, Jacques Chapman. "The solution\, however\, is certainly not what Bill Carpenter is proposing." Chapman warns\, that if fully implemented\, Carpenter's plan will trigger consequences the CEO does not want to make public. 7000 student riders whose express transfer buses never went to the Transit Center now will be penalized and forced to take regular line service buses to the Transit Center potentially leaving no seats or standing room for regular paying customers. Because of the decision not to renew the Rochester City School District contract\, which had been subsidizing RTS operations\, bus fares will have to be increased. Eliminating 40 maintenance personnel will strain that department so much that techs will have difficulty maintaining and repairing buses causing even more daily cuts and missed trips for scheduled route service leaving more customers on the street. The workers and supporters of the RTS services will be at a rally calling for the replacement of Bill Carpenter as CEO of the RGRTA to the Board of Commissioners with a competent CEO who can manage in adversity and efficiently utilize available resources. \n [source: Rochester Red and Black e-mail\, 2015-May-5]

SUMMARY:In Defense of Fred Goudy by Paul Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Today from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection\, Paul Shaw will present In Defense of Fred Goudy. \nFrederic W. Goudy is widely acknowledged to be one of the titans of American type design—alongside Morris Fuller Benton\, W.A. Dwiggins and Oswald Cooper—in the first half of the twentieth century. Yet\, today he is often derided as an egotist and his typefaces dismissed as dated\, inconsistent or clumsy. His reputation has been eclipsed by his students Cooper and Dwiggins\, though neither had a type design career to rival his. This talk will present a case for the importance of both Goudy and his typefaces—whether they are likable or not—from an historical vantage point. It will argue that Goudy's typefaces were an integral aspect of the "modernization" of American graphic design as it emerged from Victorian printing and the Arts and Crafts movement in the first decades of the 20th century. And that Goudy himself deserves to be seen as the key figure in the development of type design as a profession\, a precursor to today's independent digital type designers. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-May-4]
