SUMMARY:Al Helm: Martin Luther King in Palestine screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Al Helm: Martin Luther King in Palestine (Connie Field\, U.S. / Occupied Palestinian Territory 2014\, 93 min.) as part of the 2015 Witness Palestine Film Series. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. \nWhile capturing the growing non-violent movement of young people in Palestine\, this film brings a fresh perspective for understanding the realities of Palestinian life under occupation. Come travel with an African-American gospel choir and with MLK Scholar Clayborne Carson\, the author of a play about Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. In collaboration with members of the Palestinian National Theatre\, Carson and the choir adapt and then perform the play for Palestinian audiences in the West Bank. Choir members\, drawn from devoutly Christian churches\, are traveling to the Middle East for the first time and witnessing the realities of life under occupation. Hoping to be a voice for change\, the author and the singers are themselves profoundly changed by the experience. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-28]

SUMMARY:Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (F.W. Murnau\, U.S. 1927\, 97 min.\, 35mm). \nAcclaimed German director F. W. Murnau's (Nosferatu\, The Last Laugh) first Hollywood film elicited extraordinary praise from the critics. Lighting\, camera angles and movement\, acting style\, judicious use of sound effects and music—all are smoothly integrated to tell the simple story of a man torn between his sweet country wife and a "vamp" from the city. The culmination of the silent cinema and a harbinger of things to come\, Sunrise won three Oscars\, including one for its Unique and Artistic Quality of Production. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-28]

SUMMARY:Resistencia: The Fight for the Aguan Valley screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Resistencia: The Fight for the Aguan Valley (Jesse Freeston\, Canada / Honduras 2014\, 92 min.) \nJune 28th\, 2009. The Honduran people are preparing to vote in the first referendum in the country's history. But\, instead of waking up to ballot boxes\, they see soldiers carrying out the first coup d'état in Central America in three decades. This is the story of the two thousand farming families who challenged the coup project by taking over the plantations of the most powerful landowner in the country and converting them into worker-run cooperatives. Shot over four years\, the film is both a testament to the capacity of an organized movement to transform the most fertile land in the country\, as well as an account of the coup regime's violent attempts to get the land back. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:The French Connection screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The French Connection (William Friedkin\, U.S. 1971\, 104 min.\, 35mm). \nFeaturing what may be the most relentless and exciting car chase in cinema history\, The French Connection is based on the true story of two New York cops\, played by Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider\, who try to break up the eponymous international heroin ring. Tautly directed by William Friedkin\, the film was a box office hit and won Oscars for Best Picture\, Actor\, Director\, and Screenplay. The French Connection\, one of the quintessential portrayals of New York City in the seventies\, takes a brutal yet ironic look at law enforcement and the illegal drug trade in which each is seen to be as violent and coldblooded as the other. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-28]

SUMMARY:Scanners screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Scanners (David Cronenberg\, Canada 1981\, 103 min.\, 35mm). \nThe result of a scientific experiment gone awry\, "scanners" have the ability to read thoughts\, control others through brain waves and cause heads to explode. The doctor (Patrick McGoohan) who created this mutant breed attempts to stop the evil scanner army led by the nefarious Darryl Revok (Michael Ironside). The makeup effects by Dick Smith and the final confrontation between Revok and the angelic scanner Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) provide genre fans with more than enough reason to see this horror classic. But master filmmaker Cronenberg invests the material with an often haunting personal quality that provides some unusual emotional resonance for the more discerning viewer. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Oct-5]

SUMMARY:"Dreams We Can't Come Back From" Book Release Party & Live Reading
DESCRIPTION:Dichotomy will host a Book Release and Live Reading from Dreams We Can't Come Back From: A Collection of Stories and Poems by Patrick Montanaro. \n"Dreams We Can't Come Back From" takes us to horrifying\, fantastical worlds while reminding us that those insecurities we leave behind in reality — our agoraphobia\, our self doubt\, and our anxiety that keeps us up at 2am — haunt us even in those far off dreamscapes. Part Lovecraft\, part Japanese body horror\, this collection of poems and short stories brings together all the things that gives the author nightmares. Designed and fully illustrated by Justyn Iannucci this book hones in on the unsettling and waits for your imagination to get lost in the unease. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-Oct-5]

SUMMARY:Liz en Septiembre (Liz in September) screening
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off the ImageOut Film Festival is Liz en Septiembre (Liz in September\, Fina Torres\, Venezuela 2014\, 100 min.) at the Little Theatre. \nThe gorgeous beaches of the Caribbean serve as the backdrop to Liz in September\, a touching film based on the classic play Last Summer at Bluefish Cove by Jane Chambers. Director Fina Torres updates the original 1980 work\, giving it a more streamlined\, modern feel for today's audiences. Out lesbian actress/supermodel Patricia Velasquez (The Mummy\, The Mummy Returns\, The L Word) stars as Liz\, a hard-partying\, love-'em-and-leave-'em lesbian who celebrates her birthday each year with her friends in the Caribbean. But this year is different. Liz is terminally ill\, a fact she hides from all but one of her friends. This will most likely be her last retreat with them and she wants to make the most of it. \n [source: ImageOut website\, 2015-Oct-5]
