SUMMARY:Marx In Soho\, a play on history theatrical performance (2015-Sep-26 @ 5:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:In "Marx In Soho\, a play on history"\, historian Howard Zinn creates a whimsical one-man play in which Karl Marx returns from the grave in order to clear his name. However\, due to a bureaucratic mixup\, Marx winds up — not in his old stomping grounds of London — but in modern-day New York City's SoHo district. Featuring veteran actor\, Jack Simel\, who has worked with most of Rochester's theatre groups and is an Artist in Residence at the MuCCC. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:PlantPure Nation screening (2015-Sep-27 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Rochester Academy of Medicine will screen PlantPure Nation (Nelson Campbell\, U.S. 2015\, 95 min.) \nA plant-based diet has a lower carbon footprint than other diets. On September 27\, the film "Plantpure Nation" is premiering in Rochester. We expect this film to bring about a quantum leap in the acceptance of a plant-based diet and its adoption by the mainstream\, including health care providers and all sectors of our Rochester community. There will be free vegan refreshments and a lively Q&A after the film. \n [source: Color Brighton Green website\, 2015-Sep-7]

SUMMARY:The Wanted 18 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Wanted 18 (Paul Cowan\, Amer Shomali\, Canada / Occupied Palestinian Territory / France 2014\, 75 min.) as part of the 2015 Witness Palestine Film Series. \nIs it possible that eighteen cows present a security issue for the Israeli Defense Force? Indeed it is. They become The Wanted 18. This delightful film mixes animation of the cows with the real-life situation of Palestinians attempting to survive. As Palestinians must also do to get by\, the film adds humor to a deadly serious matter. The people shown are not actors; they're the actual people of the village. This is the story of the intifada as it played out in Beit Sahour\, a Bethlehem suburb\, in the late 1980s to early 1990s. A group of Palestinians tried to break the Israeli stranglehold on supplying goods by purchasing eighteen cows from Israel in order to produce an independent supply of milk. However\, once they had the cows\, the Israeli government became concerned it could set off widespread civil disobedience\, so the villagers make a strong effort to the hide their bovine property amongst the town people. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:Journey to Italy screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Journey to Italy (Viaggio in Italia\, Roberto Rossellini\, Italy 1954\, 83 min.\, 35mm). \nThe most vital of a series of films Ingrid Bergman made with then-husband Rossellini\, Journey to Italy is a breathtaking cinematic trip through Italy and a masterpiece of happenstance experience leading to epiphany\, with detached couple Bergman and George Sanders recognizing their dwindling chances for happiness while on holiday. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:Roadmap to Apartheid screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Roadmap to Apartheid (Eron Davidson\, Ana Nogueira\, U.S. 2012\, 95 min.) as part of the 2015 Witness Palestine Film Series. \nIn this award-winning documentary\, directors Ana Nogueira and Eron Davidson take a detailed look at the apartheid analogy often used to describe the Palestinian situation. Nogueira is a white South African and Davidson is a Jewish Israeli. Roadmap to Apartheid shows us why many Palestinians feel they are living in an Apartheid system today\, and why an increasing number of people around the world agree with them. To understand the Apartheid analogy\, this film provides side-by-side comparisons\, noting where the analogy is useful and where it is not. The comparisons start at the beginning of the film with split-screen images showing South Africa next to the occupied Palestinian territories. The voices of South Africans\, Israelis\, and Palestinians share their experiences and how those experiences have personally affected them. We wonder\, 'is peace possible'? The closing segment in the film examines frameworks for imagining a shared future based on freedom and equality for all people. The hopeful message at the end of this film suggests that peace is\, indeed\, possible. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:The Girl Without a Soul screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Girl Without a Soul (John H. Collins\, U.S. 1917\, 80 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nJohn H. Collins is one of the great "What if . . . ?" figures of American cinema\, a brilliantly creative filmmaker who went from being a costume department assistant to a major director within four short years before dying at the age of 31 in the 1918 influenza pandemic. Founding film curator James Card was a passionate devotee of Collins's work\, and it is through his influence that George Eastman House is the principal repository of Collins's few extant films\, which show both a subtle understanding of human nature and often breathtakingly daring cinematography and editing. The Girl Without a Soul stars Viola Dana (to whom Collins was married) in a dual role as twin sisters\, one of whom is a gifted violinist and the other a deeply troubled girl jealous of her sister's abilities and the love bestowed upon her by their violinmaker father. This jealousy and the violinist sister's unworldliness lead both into turbulent moral conflict\, which takes considerable fortitude from both to overcome. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:Greetings screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Greetings (Brian De Palma\, U.S. 1968\, 88 min.\, 35mm). \nGreetings was Brian De Palma's first great cinematic statement. It appeared on the eve of this country's most turbulent decade since the American Civil War\, and in advance of the efforts of an ostensibly "new" Hollywood to render the boundless energies of the counterculture into commodity form. Throughout this thrillingly erratic film\, De Palma seems to be searching for an attitude\, for a style\, that could be appropriate to the strangeness and violence of his moment. He openly samples from the French New Wave and American underground filmmakers such as Andy Warhol\, but also makes ample use of the particular resources available to him\, from the seedy streets and characters of late-sixties Manhattan—with its infinite list of internal contradictions—to the charisma and range of a young\, unknown actor named Robert De Niro. Ultimately\, however\, it is toward comedy that Greetings could be said to aspire. Even beyond its heady politics\, its film-historical fluency\, and its sharp-eyed critique of American society\, Greetings invites its audience to laugh. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:River Campus Libraries Observes Banned Books Week
DESCRIPTION:Lolita. To Kill a Mockingbird. The Great Gatsby. These books and many others are\, or at one time were\, banned or challenged in libraries\, schools\, and bookstores across the globe. In 1982\, the American Library Association launched Banned Books Week\, an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and express ideas. More than 11\,300 books have been challenged since 1982\, making the event and the attention it draws to the dangers of censorshop as important as ever. In honor of this year's Banned Books Week (September 27-October 3\, 2015)\, the River Campus Libraries is hosting a Read Out on Thursday\, October 1 from 3-4 p.m. in the Q&I area of Rush Rhees Library. University leadership\, faculty\, staff\, and students will read short passages in any language from their favorite banned or challenged books. Members of the Greater Rochester community are also invited to participate. \n [source: Rush Rhees Library website\, 2015-Sep-28]
