SUMMARY:L'heure d'été (Summer Hours) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen L'heure d'été (Summer Hours\, Olivier Assayas\, France 2008\, 103 min.\, 35mm\, French w/ subtitles). \nThe divergent paths of three fortysomething siblings collide when their mother\, heiress to her uncle's exceptional 19th-century art collection\, dies suddenly. Left to come to terms with themselves and their differences\, Adrienne (Juliette Binoche)\, a successful New York designer; Frédéric\, an economist and university professor in Paris; and Jérémie\, a dynamic businessman in China\, confront the end of childhood\, and their shared memories\, background\, and unique vision of the future. Incisively written\, Olivier Assayas's film moves effortlessly through its narrative with all the grace of Renoir at the height of his powers. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-11]

SUMMARY:PAY 2 PLAY: Democracy's High Stakes screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen PAY 2 PLAY: Democracy's High Stakes (John Ennis\, U.S. 2014\, 87 min.) \nPay 2 Play follows filmmaker John Ennis' quest to find a way out from under the Pay 2 Play System\, where Politicians reward their donors with even larger sums from the public treasury — through contracts\, tax cuts\, and deregulation. Along the way\, he journeys through high drama on the Ohio campaign trail\, uncovers the secret history of the game Monopoly\, and explores the underworld of L.A. street art on a humorous odyssey that reveals how much of a difference one person can make. Pay 2 Play: Democracy's High Stakes is the layman's guidebook to taking back our democracy. \n [source: Metro Justice film series\, 2015-Aug-11]

SUMMARY:The Son of Kong screening (2015-Aug-17 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Son of Kong (Ernest B. Schoedsack\, U.S. 1933\, 70 min.\, 35mm). \nBogged down with lawsuits and money troubles following King Kong's charge through Manhattan\, conscience-heavy producer Carl Denham boards the Venture\, a ship captained by the enterprising Captain Englehorn. In Dakang they meet Nils Helstrom\, who spins a yarn about treasure on Skull Island to fool them into getting him out of Dakang. When they reach Skull Island they realize Kong wasn't the only member of his family . . . Quickly following on the success of King Kong\, The Son of Kong is a charming\, small-scale sequel\, featuring much of the crew of the first film\, including animator Willis O'Brien. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-3]

SUMMARY:Finding Your Female Ancestors lecture
DESCRIPTION:Marian Henry will discuss Finding Your Female Ancestors in the Gates Town Hall Annex. \nDifficulty in finding female ancestors has many causes. They are mentioned in fewer sources and the sources treat them differently. Census\, naturalization\, military records\, land records—give different information about women. Marian will share how to locate harder-to-find sources produced by women and suggestions for what is often the most difficult puzzle—finding a wife's maiden name. \n [source: City Newspaper events calendar\, 2015-Aug-3]

SUMMARY:The Devil-Doll screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Devil-Doll (Tod Browning\, U.S. 1936\, 78 min.\, 35mm). \nWhile Dracula and Freaks are recognized as cult classics\, Tod Browning directed other inventive horror films that deserve a second look. The Devil-Doll\, a unique and frightening foray into the world of miniature men\, features groundbreaking special effects and sets that still impress. In this study of the macabre\, Paul Lavond (Lionel Barrymore) exacts revenge on the crooked associates who sent him to jail by shrinking humans down to doll size and having them carry out his evil deeds. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-11]

SUMMARY:Baby Gramps musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Writer Patrick Ferris said he has "a mass appeal in the sense that any audience between the age of 2 and 102 are captivated by his vaudeville antics\, hilarious lyrics and animated guitar playing… His voice is a cross between Popeye the Sailor and a Didgeridoo and the plinkity plink of his Very worn National steel guitar\, sounds like a wind up jack in the box. If you listen closely and know anything about music\, you'll realize Gramps is an absolutely incredible guitar player. Being a professional musician for over 40 years can't help but give you some sort of chops\, but Gramps is a modern day Robert Johnson; a revolutionary guitarist that\, like Thelonious Monk on piano\, can play the notes "between the cracks." \n [source: Abilene website\, 2015-Aug-11]

SUMMARY:Islands screening\, Christo in Paris screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Islands (Albert Maysles\, David Maysles\, and Charlotte Zwerin\, Canada 1987\, 58 min.\, 16mm)\, and Christo in Paris (Albert Maysles\, David Maysles\, Deborah Dickson\, and Susan Froemke\, U.S. 1990\, 58 min.\, 16mm). \nFor a brief two weeks in May 1983\, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Surrounded Islands blossomed on the waters of Biscayne Bay\, Florida. Eleven scrub pine islands were surrounded by 6.5 million square feet of bright pink fabric. A three-year struggle\, a work of art\, and a political drama interwoven with two other projects-in-progress—the wrapping of the Pont Neuf in Paris and the Reichstag in Berlin. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's first grand-scale urban project was wrapping the oldest bridge in Paris\, the same bridge where Christo had courted Jeanne-Claude. A love story set in the heart of Paris: between a refugee artist and a French general's daughter\, between a 400-year-old bridge and the people of Paris. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-11]

SUMMARY:Candida theatrical performance (2015-Aug-20 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:In "Candida"\, Shaw presents a minister's wife compelled to choose between her staid husband\, the Rev. James Morell\, and a mysterious young suitor\, Eugene Marchbanks. A scoundrel of a father-in-law\, a fawning intern and a conflicted secretary add to the comedy and Shaw takes ample opportunity for social commentary\, as always\, challenging Victorian standards\, especially those involving marriage. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Aug-11]

SUMMARY:El sol del membrillo (The Quince Tree Sun) screening
DESCRIPTION:El sol del membrillo (The Quince Tree Sun\, Víctor Erice\, Spain 1992\, 133 min.\, 35mm\, Spanish w/ subtitles) \nIn the fall of 1990\, the celebrated Spanish painter Antonio López García decides to create a new work. Subject of his still-life: a sun-drenched quince tree in his backyard. López turns out to be a most meticulous artist. Before he starts painting\, he carefully measures the tree and pinpoints special points of interest. His idea and desire is not only to paint the tree\, but also to capture the fleeting moment of morning sunlight sliding along the juicy autumnal fruits. He patiently tries\, fails\, tries again\, fails better—all while time passes and seasons of the year change. The Quince Tree Sun\, existing in that special territory beyond the categories of fiction and documentary\, is a sublime portrayal of nothing less than the ideas of art and inspiration themselves. It is also a portrayal of the inevitable passing of time and humans' yearning for beauty. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-17]
