He is the host of the daily program The Writer's Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry\, most recently\, Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006\, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show\, a film directed by Robert Altman. DESCRIPTION:The first Monday of every month the Flying Squirrel hosts an event that seeks to examine the role that our community space can play in creating positive social change. This month we will be examining what new trends in political repression mean for us and how we can resist their influences.  Beginning his first day in office\, Trump and his appointees have attempted to squash resistance to their regime by demanding prosecuters and DAs seek the most extreme possible charges against protestors. This month\, we will dive deep into the intricacies of the state's strategies against popular resistance and begin to examine what the best movement response to this repression would be. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Love Parade (Ernst Lubitsch\, U.S. 1929\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Silent Tuesdays series.  \nMaurice Chevalier became an overnight film sensation in his first sound feature Innocents of Paris; his sophistication\, insouciance\, overwhelming charm\, and natural comedic ability made him the first international star created by the new medium of talking pictures. Whereas Innocents of Paris had only a few songs created for Chevalier centered on a thin plot\, Paramount went all out for his second film\, The Love Parade. Ernest Vajda and Guy Bolton (whose collaborations with humorist P. G. Wodehouse had revolutionized musical theatre) wrote the script; multi-talented Victor Schertzinger (who had come to Hollywood to compose music for silent films but then became a major film director) wrote the score; brilliant newcomer Jeannette MacDonald made her screen debut; and the great director Ernst Lubitsch (who was also a trained musician) was assigned to bring everything together as his own first talkie. The result was cinema's first truly witty musical\, which rolls along with incredible fluency and ingratiating sauciness. DESCRIPTION:Act in solidarity with food service workers demanding fair scheduling! We'll be gathering to support hourly workers in calling attention to Governor Cuomo's Fair Scheduling Act\, which fast food workers have already won in New York City! This call to action will be supporting that victory and fighting for the same economic justice for food workers all across New York State.  If passed through the Department of Labor\, the Fair Scheduling Act would require employers to give their workers at least two weeks notice on their schedule\, four hours pay for any shift lost within 72 hours\, and extra pay for last minute call-in shifts. This gives workers the more predictable and dependable schedule they deserve. For example\, employees with children or dependents would be better able to secure care. Therefore\, a statewide fair scheduling act would continue to tackle industry-wide abusive practices.
