SUMMARY:Citizen K screening (2020-Feb-11 @ 6:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Citizen K (Alex Gibney\, U.K. / U.S. 2019\, 126 min.) followed by a Panel Discussion including Natalya Arapov as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nOscar winning writer/director Alex Gibney's revelatory Citizen K is an intimate yet sweeping look at post-Soviet Russia from the perspective of the enigmatic Mikhail Khodorkovsky\, a former oligarch turned political dissident. Benefitting from the chaos that ensued after the dissolution of the U.S.S.R.\, Khodorkovsky was able to amass a fortune in financing and oil production and became the richest man in Russia. But when he accused the new Putin regime of corruption\, Khodorkovsky was arrested\, his assets were seized and following a series of show trials\, he was sentenced to more than ten-years in prison. Today\, as an exile living in London\, he continues to speak out against Putin's two-decade stranglehold on power. \nExpertly researched and photographed\, Gibney uses Khodorkovsky's story as a way to explore the complex interplay between oligarchy and government and its destructive effect on democracy\, in Russia and beyond. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2020-Feb-10]

SUMMARY:I Like It Strange: Karen Yasinsky in Dialogue with the VSW Film Collection
DESCRIPTION:In Dialogue is a series in which we invite practicing filmmakers to show their work alongside films from the VSW Collection\, creating a dialogue among works that resonates with and reflects upon the approach of the filmmaker. This program features animated films by Baltimore-based filmmaker Karen Yasinsky\, who uses hand-made puppets\, rotoscoped animation and re-purposed footage to address themes of empathy\, violence\, spiritual grace and redemption in her films. Yasinsky has selected films from the VSW collection that reflect an oneiric approach to both subject and the practice of animation. Artist in attendance. \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2020-Feb-3]

SUMMARY:Citizen K screening (2020-Feb-15 @ 3 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Citizen K (Alex Gibney\, U.K. / U.S. 2019\, 126 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series.
