SUMMARY:Hal screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Hal (Amy Scott\, U.S. 2018\, 90 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nFilmmaker Hal Ashby's obsessive genius leads to an unprecedented string of Oscar-winning classics\, including "Harold and Maude\," "Shampoo" and "Being There." But as contemporaries Francis Ford Coppola\, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg rise to blockbuster stardom in the 1980s\, Ashby's uncompromising nature plays out as a cautionary tale of art versus commerce. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:The Big Sleep screening (2018-Aug-14 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Big Sleep (Howard Hawks\, U.S. 1946\, 114 min.\, 35mm) as part of the War\, Myth\, Desire series. \nThe second collaboration between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall was this adaptation of Raymond Chandler's legendary detective novel with Bogie as Philip Marlowe. Forget the convoluted plot (co-scripted by William Faulkner)—just revel in the thick film noir atmosphere and watch the sexy sparks fly between the two leads. Held back by Warner Bros. until 1946 when the film was recut\, this restored 1945 version will be followed by a detailed documentary (38 min.) about the two versions. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-6]

SUMMARY:Vozvrashchenie (The Return) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Vozvrashchenie (The Return\, Andrey Zvyagintsev\, Russia 2003\, 105 min.\, 35mm\, Russian w/subtitles) as part of the Andrey Zvyagintsev series. \nThe debut feature of celebrated director Andrey Zvyagintsev (Loveless\, Leviathan) earns its place in the pantheon of great Russian cinema. Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival\, the film is a mixture of psychological thriller and road movie\, telling the story of two young brothers who must cope with the sudden and unexplained return of their father after a twelve-year absence. The three embark on a road trip that becomes a background for self-discovery and the destruction of deeply rooted emotional investments. Straightforward yet satisfyingly layered\, The Return combines deep psychological exploration with bold statements about the trials of manhood. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-6]

SUMMARY:Stagecoach screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Stagecoach (John Ford\, U.S. 1939\, 96 min.\, 35mm) as part of the War\, Myth\, Desire series. \nIn making this film—often considered the first "adult" western—john Ford tells a story some have labeled Grand Hotel on wheels. He also introduced two elements that would be of great significance in his work. First\, he launched John Wayne into national consciousness. Second\, he introduced us to Monument Valley\, the stunning Navajo territory of sandstone buttes and towers that would become iconic in this and eight later Ford pictures. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:Real Steam Train Rides (2018-Aug-18 @ 10 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:If you've heard of Thomas the Tank Engineâ„¢\, this is his real life cousin! For the first time since the 1950s\, the hills will once again echo with steam whistles when the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum hosts real steam train rides on August 18-19 and 25-26. The museum will host Viscose Co. No. 6\, a vintage steam locomotive that once operated for the American Viscose Co. in Roanoke\, Virginia. Enjoy a ride in our new open-air touring car so you can experience all the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it works hard to pull against the steep grades. Seats are also available inside our caboose if you prefer a quieter ride. Thanks to the cooperation of the neighboring New York Museum of Transportation\, visitors will be able to enjoy an extended two-mile round trip through our bucolic museum grounds. Live entertainment will be provided by banjo player Mike Kornrich. Visitors will also enjoy a live blacksmithing demonstration while they tour our museum exhibits and our large collection of historic trains. Refreshments will be available for purchase\, including a full grill menu. Our museum gift shop is stocked with many railroad souvenirs for train buffs of all ages. All Aboard! \n [source: Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum website\, 2018-Aug-13]

DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen RBG (Julie Cohen\, Betsy West\, U.S. 2018\, 98 min.) "At the age of 84\, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. But without a definitive Ginsburg biography\, the unique personal journey of this diminutive\, quiet warrior's rise to the nation's highest court has been largely unknown\, even to some of her biggest fans — until now. SUMMARY:The Postman Always Rings Twice screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Postman Always Rings Twice (Tay Garnett\, U.S. 1946\, 113 min.\, 35mm) as part of the War\, Myth\, Desire series. \nAfter taking a job at a diner\, drifter Frank Chambers (John Garfield) finds that his handyman duties are significantly less interesting than the boss's wife—a lipstick blonde (Lana Turner) whose plans for the adulterous pair lead to murder\, betrayal\, and death. The second adaptation of James M. Cain's novel (Visconti's Ossessione was made three years prior) is classic film noir at its most erotic\, thanks in no small part to Turner's performance as the dangerously alluring femme fatale. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:Tierra Mestiza featuring Omar Tamez and Angelica Sanchez musical performance
DESCRIPTION:"Tamez's music\, while including modern European and American instruments never seems to originate in their commonly associated styles and\, while the language of his poetry is Spanish\, the spirit of his music is pre-Columbian. At first\, he almost seems to be playing at the guitar; but as his performance continues\, you see that the guitar is what he plays his music on. Instead of accessing the 'tradition' of the instrument (something he is quite capable of doing\, as his discography shows)\, he goes to a tradition of place\, where instruments are assimilated. In a sense\, the umbrella he uses for his projects\, 'Non-Jazz\,' is a non-sequitur\, since indigenousness is the root of jazz as well." Ratzo B. Harris — New Music Box \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Aug-13]
