SUMMARY:The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean (Juleen Compton\, U.S. 1966\, 82 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nCompton's second independent film is the story of a clairvoyant teenage girl\, Norma Jean\, taken advantage of by a boy band fashioned after the Beatles\, determined to exploit the young woman's powers as part of a hoax revival. Filmed in the Ozarks with a cast of young\, unknown actors\, the picture suggests a tender tale about a pair of young companions. However\, the movie quickly takes an unusual turn when Norma Jean and her friend Vance pick up an enormous plastic dome they've ordered. Stylistically accomplished\, the movie is an impressive example of American independent feature filmmaking during the mid-1960s and an uncommon portrayal\, for the time\, of female agency. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:B's Bees musical performance (2018-May-24 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:B's Bees is excited to announce the release of not one\, but two albums in early 2018. Their first 2018\, a tribute to the great Charlie Haden\, and aptly titled "Dear Charlie"\, has been selling strongly since it's Jan. 2018 release\, and reached #4 on itunes Canada's Jazz Charts. The album contains compositions from the various eras of Charlie Haden's illustrious career\, and includes several selections from his Liberation Music Orchestra repertoire\, arranged in a new and exciting way. Their second 2018 release\, titled "Kanata" is set to be released on April 20. The album contains a suite written by bandleader Brandon Goodwin titled Kanata Suite\, and is an ode to his home country of Canada. This U.S. tour will be their second foray into the country\, the first taking them from Montreal\, to New Orleans\, to work with producer Delfeayo Marsalis\, before heading back to Montreal to record their two new records. For their performances on this tour the group will be performing a mixture of music from both of their new albums. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:Western Centuries musical performance
DESCRIPTION:When did country music start to sound the same? The first generation of country artists borrowed from everything around them: Appalachian string band music\, Texas fiddle traditions\, cowboy songs\, Delta blues. In an era of unprecedented access to our musical pasts\, shouldn't country music be even more diverse than it was in its infancy? Honky-tonk super-group Western Centuries\, back with a new album in 2018\, surely understands this. They aren't bound by any dictum to write songs in a modern country\, or even a retro country style; instead they're taking their own personal influences as three very different songwriters and fusing it into a sound that moves beyond the constraints of country. Part of the reason they can make music with this range of influences is because of their roots in city life. Both Cahalen Morrison and Ethan Lawton\, two of the three principal songwriters\, live in Seattle's diverse South end\, and the third songwriter\, Jim Miller\, spends most of his time in and around New York City. The urban landscape is rarely mentioned in country music\, but it makes for a refreshing sound that draws as easily from modern R&B as it does George Jones. It helps too that the album was recorded and co-produced by acclaimed musician and Grammy-winning producer Joel Savoy in Eunice\, Louisiana\, where local Cajun and Creole artists have always been adept at marrying old country sounds with R&B and rock 'n' roll. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:He Walked by Night screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen He Walked by Night (Alfred Werker\, U.S. 1948\, 79 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nInspired by the true story of Erwin "Machine Gun" Walker's shocking LA crime spree throughout 1945 and 1946\, He Walked by Night is a superbly crafted documentary-style noir thriller released by Eagle-Lion Films and produced by Bryan Foy. Known as the "Keeper of the Bs" during his previous stints at Warner Bros. and Fox\, Foy's team (led by director Alfred Werker and an uncredited Anthony Mann) imbued the production with impressive creativity despite the Poverty Row studio's budgetary limitations. Critical praise was unanimous\, with Variety calling it a "high-tension crime meller\, supercharged with violence but sprung with finesse." \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:The Younger Gang musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The Younger Gang returns to Abilene Bar and Lounge! Based in the traditions of Old-Time Appalachia and classic Americana\, The Younger Gang seeks new interpretations of old music without losing touch with its roots. Notorious In the latter part of 1860's\, the Younger Gang was a band of train robbin'/bank robbin' outlaws. Fast forward a century and a half and you'll find a southern born classical Eastman grad who sells her soul to the devil for a ticket back to depression era Appalachia to become the most bitchin' old-time banjo picker north of the Mason-Dixon Line. On her travels back north she is joined by three companions of a different time and origin. Electric elements and modern textures are spun into gritty\, down-home Old-Time traditions to create a sound that is a living and breathing embodiment of a timeless tradition. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:Sons of the Desert screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sons of the Desert (William A. Seiter\, U.S. 1933\, 68 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nStan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's fourth feature-length comedy\, Sons of the Desert\, begins at a secret meeting of the boys' eponymously titled fraternal lodge. Amid secret handshakes and tarbooshes\, the "exhausted ruler" swears attendance at the lodge's 87th annual convention in Chicago. When their wives forbid them to go\, Hardy comes up with a ruse. Stan and Ollie sneak off to Chicago to eat\, drink\, and make merry with their lodge brothers until a maritime disaster and an incriminating newsreel expose the charade\, culminating in a last act that is perhaps the funniest of Laurel and Hardy's career. The movie was one of the top ten films of the year grossing over $1 million worldwide upon its original release. In 2012\, it was named to the National Film Registry. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-21]

Later\, when Grey Haven disbanded\, John formed "Olias". John would finish his B.S. and M.S. in Music education and begin a career teaching music in 1987. In 1990 John helped form "No Alibi" with his wife also singing. That band would morph into "The JY Allstars" and then "Joe Puma and the Panthers". In 1992\, John joined The Connectors. John also released a CD of solo material in 1995 called "From Mr. Sixty Six". The C.D included performances by many of his friends in local music including Lee David (Center Stage\, East Coast Connection)\, Linda (Rutherford) Marino (Celtic Fire)\, Jim Kerins (Nik and The Nice Guys)\, and Elvio Fernandes (Daughtry\, Uncle Plum). John stayed in The Connectors until 1996 when He and Mark Guarino brought back Revolver as a Beatle Tribute band. Eventually\, Revolver got absorbed by and became "The East Coast Connection" in 2004. John left East Coast in 2006 and he and 2 other East Coast members formed "Nbt" with Ron Rocco on Drums. This group stopped performing together in 2009. Over the years\, John Yeara has done some fill in work w/ a few well known popular groups such as "No Camouflage"\, "Private Drive"\, "Oasis"\, "Take 5"\, and "7th Heaven" In 2010\, John Yeara and Bruce Hummel hooked up again and restarted Revolver. Since then Bruce has left and the band now features Tim Coon on Bass\, Tom Savastano on drums and Don Mancuso on guitar\, While Jy handles more rhythm guitar and some keyboards while still singing quite a bit. Jy also performs w/ Don in an acoustic duet\, "J.Y. and Dee". Ian began playing piano at the age of 6 w/ Mrs. Eleanor Fox and later also with Fred Dicesare. In 5th grade\, he began playing Sax as well and was taught by local virtuoso\, Tom Ellison. At the time\, he was always singing in chorus from 4th grade through H.S. With the Greece Arcadia High Jazz Band\, Ian performed at the Rochester Jazz Festival twice as a teenager. His first professional performance was with his father's group\, "NBT" in 2009. He played keyboards for the group in a packed house for two rush songs; 'limelight' and 'subdivisions'. For the past two years\, Ian has been a music business major at the Crane School in Potsdam\, N.Y. The Crane School has turned out many great conductors\, composers\, and performers including Opera Sensation Renee Fleming. Ian has often performed with Revolver on Vocals\, Keyboards\, and Sax. This summer\, Ian and his father are performing acoustic rock on Piano and Guitar as "I.J.Y." \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-May-21]

SUMMARY:The Murder of Fred Hampton\, The Jungle screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Murder of Fred Hampton (Howard Alk\, U.S. 1971\, 88 min.\, 16mm) and preceded by The Jungle (Charlie "Brown" Davis\, U.S. 1967\, 22 min.\, 35mm)—a short documentary created by teenagers about street life in North Philadelphia—as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nA group of independent filmmakers in Chicago\, fashioning themselves as the Film Group\, set out to profile Chairman Fred Hampton\, the charismatic 21-year-old leader of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party\, and ended up documenting the last nine months of his life. During production\, in the early morning of December 4\, 1969\, Hampton's apartment and Party hangout was raided by officers assigned to State's Attorney Edward V. Hanrahan. During the ensuing assault\, Hampton and Mark Clark were killed and four others wounded. As the documentary goes on to argue\, the raid was unlawful and Hampton's death was\, in effect\, an assassination. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-21]
