SUMMARY:Contact screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Contact (Robert Zemeckis\, U.S. 1997\, 150 min.\, 35mm) as part of the First Contact series. \nBased on the novel by astrophysicist Carl Sagan\, Contact is a thoughtful\, philosophical exploration of what an encounter with an extraterrestrial intelligence might be like. The film is notable for its groundbreaking special effects work; at the time\, the opening sequence was the longest computer-generated effect ever made for a live-action film\, and it remains impressive today. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-6]

SUMMARY:I Am Not Your Negro screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen I Am Not Your Negro (\, Raoul Peck\, France / U.S. 2016\, 95 min.) as part of the The Black Cinema Series followed by a Panel Discussion with Tokeya C. Graham\, James Baldwin\, David Shakes\, Richard J. McCullough\, and Nate Brown. \nIn 1979\, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his new endeavour: the writing of his final book\, Remember This House\, recounting the lives and successive assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X\, and Martin Luther King\, Jr. Baldwin was not able to complete the book before his death\, and the unfinished manuscript was entrusted to director Raoul Peck (Moloch Tropical\, Murder in Pacot) by the writer's estate. Built exclusively around Baldwin's words\, Peck's I Am Not Your Negro delves into the complex legacy of three lives (and deaths) that permanently marked the American social and political landscape. Framing the unfinished work as a radical narration about race in America\, Peck matches Baldwin's lyrical rhetoric with rich archival footage of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements\, and connects these historical struggles for justice and equality to the present-day movements that have taken shape in response to the killings of young African-American men including Trayvon Martin\, Tamir Rice\, Mike Brown\, and Amir Brooks. Exploring what it means to be Black in America today\, Peck reflects on the legacy of racial violence that still permeates the country. In Baldwin's words\, "You cannot lynch me and keep me in ghettos without becoming something monstrous yourselves. And furthermore\, you give me a terrifying advantage: you never had to look at me; I had to look at you. I know more about you than you know about me. Not everything that is faced can be changed\, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." By revealing the deep connections between past and present injustice\, I Am Not Your Negro weaves an epic narrative about America's irrational relationship with skin colour — a relationship that would be absurd were it not so tragic. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Jan-30]

SUMMARY:Ice Station Zebra screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ice Station Zebra (John Sturges\, U.S. 1968\, 148 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Ernest Borgnine series. \nShot in both Cinerama and Super Panavision 70\, Ice Station Zebra fills the screen with some spectacular underwater images and sweeping skyscapes while balancing a human drama played out in the confines of a U.S. nuclear submarine. Rock Hudson\, Ernest Borgnine\, Patrick McGoohan\, and Jim Brown are all dependably believable as the Cold War warriors fighting the elements\, the Russians\, and an unknown saboteur\, in order to save a remote and vital U.S. weather station in the frozen wastes of the Arctic. Director Sturges balances the micro and the macro in this big-screen adaptation of Alistair MacLean's action-packed novel. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-6]

SUMMARY:Salt Printing class\, Jenn Libby
DESCRIPTION:Introduced in 1839 by Henry Fox Talbot\, salt printing is one of the earliest photographic processes and continues to be a viable option for artists interested in working with historic techniques. Participants will learn how to hand-coat plain paper to make a light sensitive printing out paper. This will then be used to make photograms using objects\, as well as positive images by contact printing with negatives (silver gelatin\, digital or glass). We will be working in a darkroom with chemicals so please wear old clothing and an apron that you don't mind staining. \n [source: The Flower City Arts Center classes\, 2017-Jan-27]

SUMMARY:L'année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen L'année dernière à Marienbad (Last Year at Marienbad\, Alain Resnais\, France/Italy 1961\, 93 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Three Films by Alain Resnais series. \nAlain Resnais teamed with novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet to create Last Year at Marienbad\, one of the most influential art films ever made. At a baroque European hotel\, a nameless hero (Giorgio Albertazzi) tries to persuade the nameless heroine (Delphine Seyrig) that they met the previous year. Moving ambiguously between past and present and filled with homages to Hollywood cinema\, this dreamlike work of screen poetry "recalls not just a style of filmmaking—glacial\, intense\, contemptuous of easy explanations—but a whole epoch of filmgoing" (Anthony Lane\, The New Yorker). \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-6]

Hunter. \nOn the outskirts of Mormon Country\, Idaho\, a six-hundred- pound recluse hides away in his apartment\, and slowly eats himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter\, he reaches out to her\, only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen.
