DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Laabs will present a lecture titled The Heat Is On: The Effects of Modern Climate Change on Mountains in Eisenhart Auditorium at the Rochester Museum and Science Center for the Monthly Meeting of the Adirondack Mountain Club – Genesee Valley Chapter.  \nAs a geologist\, SUNY Geneseo Professor Ben Laabs studies the geologic record of mountain snow and ice with the goal of reconstructing changes in hydro climate over a variety of timescales. His research\, chiefly in the Rocky Mountains and most recently in the Sangre de Christo Range in southern Colorado in June 2014\, has helped to identify the impacts of changing snow and ice on mountain environments since the last ice age ended 18\,000 years ago. His work helps to link changes in the long and short-term shifts in annual snow and ice cover in mountain watersheds to climate change.  In his first presentation to the Adirondack Mountain Club\, Professor Laabs will share some key findings from studies of declining snow and ice in Glacier National Park\, where the effects of ice on landscape evolution and alpine habitat are especially clear. The nation brimmed with relief\, joy\, and pride\, while a new national narrative of manifest destiny emerged. But drowned out by the euphoria\, other voices—many of those who fought the war—had something different to say. One week after the conflict\, Amos Oz (soon to be a celebrated author) and editor Avraham Shapira arranged to record conversations with returning soldiers about their experiences. In these intensely candid interviews\, the soldiers reveal their fears\, their feelings about the enemy\, and their doubts about the treatment of Arab prisoners of war and the forced evacuations of Palestinian villages. DESCRIPTION:Today and tomorrow\, Jenn Libby will teach a class at Genesee Libby Studio titled Ambrotypes: Photographs On Glass.  \nFrederick Scott Archer introduced the wet-plate collodion photographic process in 1851. Collodion was used to produce fine-grain\, archival glass negatives\, lantern slides\, ambrotypes\, and tintypes. This class will teach you the basics of the wet-plate collodion process to produce direct positive images on glass\, which are know as ambrotypes. Instruction will include how to properly prepare a glass plate\, pour collodion\, sensitize and process plates\, burnish and hand-color final images\, apply a protective varnish\, and house the photographs to complete the process.
