Writing for actors one knows is a great advantage when making a low-budget film that would not otherwise be assured of proper casting. The differences between Strawn and Edith also shaped the plot: Strawn has a marvelously lucid face that points like an arrow to the object of her thoughts; whereas Edith is infinitely complex and swallowed up\, impossible ever to fathom fully. The film starts with these parameters and then gradually reverses them\, so that the readable character increases her mystery and vice versa. Wellman\, U.S. 1951\, 118 min.\, 35mm)  \n"Thinking about how women made their way into the center of westerns in the Fifties (Joan Crawford in Johnny Guitar\, Barbara Stanwyck in Forty Guns)\, it's strange how seldom Wellman's remarkable portrayal of a female group is mentioned in lists of the finest 1950s westerns\, the greatest decade for that form. Both The Ox-Bow Incident and Yellow Sky might have bigger reputations and yet\, poignantly\, Westward the Women is a strong candidate for Wellman's finest western. A female trek\, even though it is led by Robert Taylor\, more or less reenacts the story of Red River. The narrative is less deep than Hawks's masterpiece\, and in some sense it is harsher\, more realistic about the difficulties and facts of loss. Another great contemporary film\, Ford's Wagon Master\, is somehow romantic by comparison. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell\, U.K. 1988\, 93 min.\, 35mm).  \nJames Card apparently had great affection for this campy horror directed by Ken Russell\, the filmmaker known for classics like Tommy (1975) and Altered States (1980). Russell loosely based the film's screenplay on Bram Stoker's novel of the same name\, but the film ultimately takes leave of its source material\, going off in wild\, unexpected directions. After Scottish archaeologist Angus Flint (Peter Capaldi) unearths the remains of what appears to be a giant snake\, strange events begin to unfold in the Derbyshire countryside surrounding the excavation site. Flint soon learns of the legend surrounding this "worm\," and eventually meets James D'Ampton (Hugh Grant)\, who claims to be the descendant of the knight credited with slaying the mythical creature.
