SUMMARY:Planes\, Trains\, and Automobiles screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Planes\, Trains\, and Automobiles (John Hughes\, U.S. 1987\, 93 min.\, 35mm) as part of the (Mostly) Happy Holidays series. \nAs marketing executive Neal Page (Steve Martin) attempts to get home for Thanksgiving\, his plans seems to be foiled at every turn by shower curtain—ring salesman Del Griffith (John Candy)\, who also happens to be traveling back to Chicago. After Neal is bumped from first class (and seated next to Del) and heavy snow diverts the flight to Wichita\, the two have little choice but to team up and rent a car to drive back home. The situation worsens as the two travelers share too much time and too little space\, and they begin to wonder if they'll ever make it back to Chicago alive. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:No Fast Food — Dave Liebman\, Drew Gress\, and Phil Haynes musical performance
DESCRIPTION:No Fast Food…is a trio of equals. 'Settings For Three' is the third release by the band\, following the superb two-disc set 'In Concert.' This studio date finds the trio diving into eight Haynes compositions. Liebman rides above the formidable rhythm team of bassist Drew Gress and Haynes. They've been playing together for over 30 years but the music is anything but predictable…an excellent demonstration of improvisational elasticity. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:Fiddler on the Roof screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Fiddler on the Roof (Norman Jewison\, U.S. 1971\, 181 min.\, 35mm) as part of the L'chaim: Celebrating Jewish Life series. \nThe iconic Broadway musical is translated beautifully to film\, breathing fresh life into the songs\, dances\, and story of tradition\, love\, and perseverance. Jewish peasant Tevye (Topol) is torn between tradition and love when his three oldest daughters defy the matchmaker and choose their own husbands—all while the family contends with growing anti-Semitism in the community surrounding their Ukrainian shtetl. We will screen director Norman Jewison's own print\, on deposit at the Eastman Museum. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:Barry Altschul and 3dom Factor musical performance (2018-Nov-26 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Born in the south Bronx on the 6th of January 1943\, drummer-composer Barry Altschul was quickly ensconced in the hard bop scene of the late 50ies and 60ies. But it was a gig with pianist Paul Bley's trio that put him amongst the ranks in the New York's burgeoning free jazz scene of the next decade. This resulted in world tours and recordings with such notables as Steve Swallow\, Gary Peacock\, the Jazz Composers' Guild Orchestra\, Steve Lacy\, Roswell Rudd\, and many others. At the end of the 60ies he played in the Cooperative Band Circle with Chick Corea\, Anthony Braxton and Dave Holland as well as with the Sam Rivers Trio with Dave Holland and with the Anthony Braxton quartet with Holland\, Georges Lewis or Kenny Wheeler. His familiarity with the tradition also landed him work with the likes of Hampton Hawes\, Sonny Criss\, Lee Konitz\, Art Pepper\, Kenny Drew\, Tony Scott\, Johnny Griffin\, Babs Gonzalez\, and many others. In addition to this\, he led his own free bop groups\, with such luminaries as Muhal\, Richard Abrams\, Anthony Davis\, Ray Anderson\, Mark Helias\, Santi Di Briano\, and Uri Caine\, to name a few. During a 10-year sojourn in Paris\, France he was chosen to be the first foreign artistic director of the French regional big band of Nancy where he conducted as well as composed music for a 20-piece orchestra with arrangements written by his friend\, the great Colderage Taylor Perkinson. During that time\, he also toured Africa\, the Middle East and Eastern Europe as a cultural ambassador for the Usis. Returning to the U.S. in 1993\, he worked as a professor at Sarah Lawrence College\, freelanced around New York\, and played with a Dave Douglas project where he renewed his relationship with Roswell Rudd. Today\, as well as performing with Roswell Rudd's Trombone Tribe\, he is also part of the F.A.B. Trio (Joe Fonda\, Barry Altschul and Billy Bang)\, the Swell-Ullman band and of many projects under his own leadership. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:Racial Equity Learning Series: Re-framing the Written and Unwritten Rules of History\, Policy\, and Law—Part D-E
DESCRIPTION:The UofR will host a Racial Equity Learning Series lecture titled Re-framing the Written and Unwritten Rules of History\, Policy\, and Law—Part D-E with Yvette Conyers\, and Rebecca Tucker in Helen Wood Hall's Craytor and McNerney Classroom 1W-509. \nBelief systems\, which inform policy and law\, can contribute to and perpetuate injustice. This injustice rests on unconscious and conscious beliefs about who matters in society and who does not. In order to make right what is inherently wrong\, collective action is required. This learning module is based on the work of the Applied Research Center\, a thirty-year-old racial justice think tank that uses media\, research and activism to promote solutions. This module provides examples of how injustice is perpetuated through the media and court systems. By working with art\, film clips and other activities participants will learn the importance of framing an issue with a racial equity lens and practice it. \n [source: Racial Equity Learning Series website\, 2018-Nov-13]

SUMMARY:The Racket screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Racket (Lewis Milestone\, U.S. 1928\, 84 min.\, DCP) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nCaptain James "Mac" McQuigg is a straitlaced police officer keeping the peace on the streets of New York during Prohibition. Nick Scarsi is a major mob boss and bootlegger with a casual attitude toward violence and quick trigger finger. Mac arrests Scarsi and his men multiple times\, but he can never get the charges to stick because the politicians are in the pocket of the gangsters. Still\, Mac becomes enough of a nuisance that Nick gets him transferred to a district in "the sticks\," where he can't do any more harm. But when Nick's little brother gets into a hit-and-run accident in Mac's precinct\, conflict can't be avoided. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-19]

SUMMARY:The House That Jack Built screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The House That Jack Built (Lars von Trier\, Denmark / France / Germany / Sweden 2018\, 155 min.) \nUSA in the 1970s. We follow Jack (Matt Dillon) through five incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack's point of view. He views each murder as an artwork in itself\, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world. Despite the fact that the final and inevitable police intervention is drawing ever near (which both provokes and puts pressure on Jack) he is — contrary to all logic — set on taking greater and greater chances. The goal is the ultimate artwork: A collection of all his killings manifested in a House that he builds. Along the way we experience Jack's descriptions of his personal condition\, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge — a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and in-depth explanations of\, for Jack\, dangerous and difficult manoeuvres. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:Emergency Ward\, The Young Fighter\, Dancing James Berry screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Emergency Ward (Fons Iannelli\, Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1952\, 16 min.\, 16mm)\, The Young Fighter\, (Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1953\, 29 min.\, 16mm)\, and Dancing James Berry\, (Leo Hurwitz\, U.S. 1954\, 17 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Leo Hurwitz series. \nLife magazine photographer Fons Iannelli developed a prototype portable\, sync-sound film camera and recorder to make documentaries that would have the same kind of immediacy as the best photojournalism. He collaborated with Leo Hurwitz in filming Emergency Ward in Manhattan's St. Vincent Hospital to create what would be the antecedent of the direct cinema (or cinema verité) movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The film was shown to Omnibus TV producer Robert Saudek\, who hired Hurwitz (using Iannelli as his front) to make three films for the series\, of which The Young Fighter was the first. Considered the first cinema verité film\, it depicts the life of an aspiring boxer trying to balance his responsibilities to his family and his sport. Dancer James Berry (1915—1969) was part of a vaudeville act with his brothers and the subject of the first (and best known) of several films Hurwitz directed about dance. Dancing James Berry played in cinematheques\, museums\, and universities around the world to rave reviews. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Nov-19]
