SUMMARY:ROC Stands with Refugees
DESCRIPTION:The recent executive order banning Syrian refugees and many Muslim immigrants from entering the country is an undisguised act of bigotry and xenophobia. We are standing in solidarity with our refugee community\, Muslim community\, and immigrant community\, and speaking out against bigotry\, xenophobia\, and intolerance in our community and in our country. We are also asking our local officials to maintain our sanctuary city status against threats of federal action. No one in Rochester should be regarded as illegal\, unwelcome\, or unwanted. Our community should and must be open to all. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Jan-30]

SUMMARY:The Poseidon Adventure screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Poseidon Adventure (Ronald Neame\, U.S. 1972\, 117 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Ernest Borgnine series. \nNotable for its incredible practical effects\, The Poseidon Adventure is a classic tale of a disastrous inverted cruise. Ernest Borgnine and Gene Hackman lead a cast of stars through a watery labyrinth as they struggle to escape their ship\, which has been flipped upside-down by a freak wave. The film was by necessity an expensive production\, requiring specially built sets that could tilt and flood. It became a massive success and helped to spawn the "disaster-movie" craze popular throughout the rest of the 1970s. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-30]

SUMMARY:Ways of Seeing: Parts 1 thru 4 screening; A Tribute to John Berger
DESCRIPTION:The VSW will screen Ways of Seeing: Parts 1 thru 4 (Michael Dibb\, U.K. 1972\, 120 min.) \nIn 1972\, art historian and critic John Berger produced Ways of Seeing\, a four-part series broadcast on BBC television. In these episodes\, Berger challenges assumptions and ideologies of visual art throughout the history of Western civilization\, and provides an indelible approach to recognizing and critiquing those assumptions for oneself. The text from these broadcasts inspired the 1972 book Ways of Seeing\, a series of essays and images that confront notions of beauty\, the aesthetics of consumption and the portrayal of women throughout the history of Western Art. The text and television broadcasts continue to be important tools in the ongoing effort to critically engage with art\, media and society. John Berger passed away on January 2nd at the age of 90. To celebrate his work\, Visual Studies Workshop with screen all four of the original BBC episodes on 16mm film\, which are part of VSW's permanent Film Collection. Introductory remarks made by Dr. Alisia Grace Chase\, Historian of Art and Visual Culture in SUNY Brockport's Department of Art. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Jan-30]
