SUMMARY:Old San Francisco screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Old San Francisco (Alan Crosland\, U.S. 1927\, 88 min.\, 35mm). \nThis film follows several generations of the Vasquez family from the eighteenth century and climaxes with the famous earthquake of 1906. Dolores Costello\, in her first solo-starring role as Dolores Vasquez\, is menaced by the villainous Chris Buckwell (played excellently by Warner Oland) until God's intervention saves her. With trapdoors\, underground passageways\, and nick-of-time rescues Old San Francisco has as much action and melodrama as the best cliff-hanger. Old San Francisco was unseen for many years until restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive in collaboration with the Library of Congress as part of The Dawn of Sound exhibition. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Garden Vibes: Dom Flemons musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Our 23rd season of Garden Vibes wraps up with Dom Flemons\, the "American Songster." A multi-instrumentalist\, Flemons plays banjo\, guitar\, harmonica\, fife\, bones\, bass drum\, snare drum\, and quills\, in addition to singing. As a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops\, an African American string band\, Flemons was able to explore his interest in bringing traditional music to new audiences. He plays old-time music with a contemporary approach—digging deep into ragtime\, spirituals\, southern folk\, string band and jug band music\, fife and drum\, and ballad idioms with showmanship and humor. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Too Blue To Be Black\, Too Black To Be Blue screening (2016-Aug-17 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Too Blue To Be Black\, Too Black To Be Blue (Mikhail A. Gershteyn\, U.S. 2015\, 59 min.) \nThey are African-American men and women\, who choose everyday to serve and protect. But do white officers\, and the larger community they serve accept African American officers? Black and Brown Officers have functioned and continue to function as the color paradigm shifts from a predominately white male occupation to a more blended work force. This documentary\, from a personal perspective\, will explore the history of both racial and community/ civil servant relationships in the land of the free. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Aug-15]

SUMMARY:Son of Frankenstein screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Son of Frankenstein (Rowland V. Lee\, U.S. 1939\, 99 min.\, 16mm). \nKarloff's final stint as the Monster is somewhat overshadowed by Bela Lugosi's scene-stealing role as the crazed shepherd Igor. The German Expressionistic sets and Basil Rathbone's histrionic performance as a descendent of Dr. Frankenstein push the previous films' atmospherics to new heights. Son of Frankenstein's success ushered in Universal's second horror wave\, which continued\, unabated and unapologetic\, until well after WWII. Note later start time. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Rounding Third theatrical performance (2016-Aug-18 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of Rounding Third by Richard Dresser. \nRounding Third\, a hilarious play by Richard Dresser\, introduces us to two Little League coaches — one a veteran\, the other a new recruit — and their markedly different personal circumstances and philosophies about the game. The audience is the stand-in for the team\, so the coaches speak directly to the audience about competition\, character\, punctuality\, and the importance of wearing the right equipment. Don\, played by Jeff Siuda\, is the tough\, blue-collar\, win-at-all-costs veteran coach whose son is the star pitcher. Michael\, played by Ross Amstey\, is a newcomer both to the town and to baseball. He's a corporate executive who agrees to be Don's assistant because he wants a special activity with his son\, who's never played baseball before. Out of these conflicting philosophies\, the real issues of the play emerge: how should we raise our children? Since we live in such a ferociously competitive society\, do we protect our children as long as possible? Or do we prepare them to be tough enough to win? You might be surprised at how you think about these essential questions. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Much Ado About Nothing screening (2016-Aug-18 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Much Ado About Nothing (Kenneth Branagh\, U.K./U.S. 1993\, 111 min.\, 35mm). \nLoosely based on Shakespeare's comedic play of the same title\, Much Ado About Nothing presents two young lovers\, Hero (Kate Beckinsale) and Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard)\, who are to be married in a week. Passing the time\, they conspire with Don Pedro (Denzel Washington) to set up a "lover's trap" for confirmed bachelor Benedick (Kenneth Branagh) and his favorite sparring partner Beatrice (Emma Thompson). Meanwhile\, the evil Don John (Keanu Reeves) conspires to break up the wedding\, accusing Hero of infidelity. Michael Keaton gives a great performance as Dogberry\, the nonsensical local constable. Directed by Kenneth Branagh and underscored by Patrick Doyle's charming soundtrack\, Much Ado About Nothing honors both Shakespeare's verbal delight and Branagh's ability to render classical humor accessible with a distinctive contemporary style. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-15]

SUMMARY:Rounding Third theatrical performance (2016-Aug-19 @ 7:30 p.m.)

SUMMARY:La calle de la amargura (Bleak Street) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La calle de la amargura (Bleak Street\, Arturo Ripstein\, Mexico/Spain 2015\, 99 min.\, DCP\, Spanish w/subtitles). \nIn the early morning hours\, two elderly prostitutes go back to their hovels. They are not tired from working; they are tired of not working. One has problems at home with her teenage daughter and cross-dressing husband. The other lives with her invalid mother and loneliness. But that night\, they have a date to celebrate the victory in the ring of two wrestlers\, twin little people wearing masks. At the hourly hotel\, in order to rob the men of their earnings\, they drug them with eye drops. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-15]

SUMMARY:The Thing screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Thing (John Carpenter\, U.S. 1982\, 109 min.\, 35mm). \nKurt Russell stars in Carpenter's slick\, smart\, scary\, and gory updating of Howard Hawks's 1950s sci-fi classic. The arctic setting remains the same\, but this time\, the alien visitor knows where to hide: inside the human body. Rob Bottin's make-up effects have to be seen to be believed. The backdrop of the frozen wasteland\, filmed in the Tongass National Forest and other locations in Alaska\, provides the audience with the feeling of isolation and the encroaching fear of surviving without the much-needed help of others. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-15]
