SUMMARY:The Sheltering Sky screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Sheltering Sky (Bernardo Bertolucci\, Uk/Italy 1990\, 138 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Vittorio Storaro series. \nWell-heeled American travelers Kit and Port (Debra Winger and John Malkovich) indulge a winsome third wheel (Campbell Scott) through North Africa. They flee erotic attachment\, pushing deeper into the desert\, where there are no hotels and dollars are worthless. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro captures the sumptuous Saharan dunescapes\, shaded Algerian alleyways and teeming markets of Niger. Ryuichi Sakamoto's sweeping score abuts hypnotic musical performances. Bertolucci cast the novel's author\, Paul Bowles\, in a cameo as the narrator of his own tale of desperation. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-24]

SUMMARY:Little Buddha screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Little Buddha (Bernardo Bertolucci\, Italy/France/Lichtenstein/Uk 1993\, 123 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Vittorio Storaro series. \nPrompted by the dreams of Lama-seeking Buddhist monks\, young Jesse Conrad travels to Bhutan to discover if he is the budding Buddha-to-be. His path to enlightenment mirrors the life story of Prince Siddhartha (Keanu Reeves). Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro bathes Tibet in warm hues\, in stark contrast to sterile\, blue Seattle. There\, Jesse's parents (the photogenic dream-team of Bridget Fonda and Chris Isaak) smolder quietly\, while the hot-and-cold color palette reveals what is unspoken. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-24]

SUMMARY:Dinner at Eight screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Dinner at Eight (George Cukor\, U.S. 1933\, 112 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Senior Matinee\, Eastman Entertains series. \nHard on the heels of its 1932 megahit Grand Hotel\, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer dream factory scored again with this witty\, withering\, and relentlessly human\, high-stakes soap opera. Scripted by Frances Marion and Herman J. Mankiewicz from the Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber\, Dinner at Eight deftly juggles several story lines featuring an A-list cast of M-G-M stars who take turns navigating life's crises with hope\, chutzpah\, and acid-tongued one-liners. Grand Hotel costars John and Lionel Barrymore\, Wallace Beery\, and Jean Hersholt are reunited and paired here with the captivating quartet of Billie Burke\, Jean Harlow\, Madge Evans\, and the inimitable Marie Dressler\, with director George Cukor keeping the pace brisk till the dinner bell rings. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-24]

SUMMARY:Connie Cook: A Documentary screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Connie Cook: A Documentary (Nils Hoover\, Sue Perlgut\, U.S. 2015\, 56 min.) \n[…]After graduating from Cornell Law School in 1943\, Constance Eberhardt Cook was one of the first women who worked in a New York City corporate law firm. She went on to become confidential legal aid to Governor Thomas Dewey and then the legislative and administrative aide to Representative R. Ashbury from the 125th legislative district. Connie sought to assume Rep. Ashbury's seat when he retired and although well qualified\, found herself opposed by the local Republican Party. Connie had to fight a four-way primary battle before facing a democratic opponent; she won the seat in 1962. Cook was a pioneer in the political world and opposed common perceptions about women's lives as she forged her career in the New York State Assembly. She represented Tompkins County when there were only two other women there. Using the political process\, Connie composed legislation concerning broad-based public control of education and the decriminalization of abortion. Her efforts regarding abortion became the model for the rest of the country in the U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade in 1973. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Apr-24]

SUMMARY:Possession screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Possession (Andrzej Å»uÅ‚awski\, France/West Germany 1981\, 127 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Andrzej Å»uÅ‚awski series. \nUpon returning home from a business trip\, Mark (Sam Neill) discovers that his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) wants a divorce. Full of hate and bitterness\, their lives spiral violently out of control\, as both turn to new lovers . . . one of which may not be human. An intense\, hellish vision of a dysfunctional relationship from outré Polish director Å»uÅ‚awski\, Possession is the very definition of a cult classic. SUMMARY:Style Wars screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Style Wars (Tony Silver\, U.S. 1983\, 69 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Wall\Therapy series. \nStyle Wars captures the look and feel of New York's subway system as graffiti writers' public playground\, battleground\, and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them by every means possible were Mayor Edward Koch\, the police\, and the New York City Transit Authority. Meanwhile MCs\, DJs\, and b-boys rocked the city with new sounds and new moves\, and street-corner breakdance battles evolved into performance art. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-24]
