SUMMARY:The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) (2015-Jul-12 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The cultural touchstone that is The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged) was born when three inspired\, charismatic comics\, having honed their pass-the-hat act at Renaissance fairs\, premiered their preposterous masterwork at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1987. It quickly became a worldwide phenomenon\, earning the title of London's second-longest-running comedy after a decade at the Criterion Theatre. The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is one of the world's most frequently produced plays\, and has been translated into dozens of languages. Featured are all 37 of Shakespeare's plays\, performed in 97 minutes\, by three actors. Fast paced\, witty\, and physical\, it's full of laughter for Shakespeare lovers and haters alike. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-Jun-29]

SUMMARY:Trouble in Paradise screening (2015-Jul-13 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Trouble in Paradise (Ernst Lubitsch\, U.S. 1932\, 82 min.\, 35mm). \nA hilarious romance about three subjects the movies have always excelled at serving up and dishing out: sex\, crime\, and conspicuous consumption. Trouble in Paradise is "the Lubitsch touch" at its most sardonic and exalted. "It is a comedy for three characters\, plus comic relief in supporting roles. Herbert Marshall plays a gentleman jewel thief\, Miriam Hopkins plays the con-woman who adores him\, and Kay Francis is the rich widow who thinks she can buy him but is content to rent him for a while. They live in a movie world of exquisite costumes\, flawless grooming\, butlers\, grand hotels in Venice\, penthouses in Paris\, cocktails\, evening dress\, wall safes\, sweeping staircases\, nightclubs\, the opera and jewelry\, a lot of jewelry. What is curious is how real they manage to seem\, in the midst of the foppery." — Roger Ebert (1998) \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-29]

SUMMARY:Live From New York! screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Live From New York! (Bao Nguyen\, U.S. 2015\, 90 min.) followed by a videoconference Q&A with director Bao Nguyen. \nSaturday Night Live has been reflecting and influencing the American Story for 40 years. Live From New York! explores the show's early years\, an experiment from a young Lorne Michaels and his cast of unknowns\, and follows its evolution into a comedy institution. The film looks at SNL as a living time capsule\, encompassing decades of American politics\, media\, tragedy\, and popular culture with an irreverent edge. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Jun-15]

SUMMARY:The Merry Widow screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Merry Widow (Ernst Lubitsch\, U.S. 1934\, 99 min.\, 35mm). \n"It is a good show in the excellent Lubitsch manner\, heady as the foam on champagne\, fragile as mist and as delicately gay as a good-natured censor will permit. Victor Leon and Leo Stein have arranged a book to suit the Lubitsch style and the songs which fall to Miss MacDonald and Mr. Chevalier have grace and wit. All of the sets are consummately lovely and a few of them are entrancing enough to persuade a Moslem that he has departed this life for the paradise promised by the Prophet. Now it is the microscopic kingdom of Marshovia which Herr Lubitsch is investigating\, with a long hop to Paris and Maxime's\, where\, sings the balladist\, a man can watch the can-can. Is Captain Danilo of the Royal Guard the most audacious philanderer in Marshovia? He is. Is the widow Sonia the ultimate bewilderment of a young man's dream? She is. Sonia also\, on the King's word\, has 52 per cent of every cow in the country. When she vacates the country and takes up quarters in Paris. Marshovia looks sick. Danilo must go to Paris and pretend to fall in love with her so that she may be restored to her native land." — Andre Sennwald\, The New York Times (1934) \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-29]

SUMMARY:Shorts Made for the Theaters screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Shorts Made for the Theaters including Popeye Makes a Movie (Seymour Kneitel\, U.S. 1950\, 9 min.\, 35mm)\, Paramount News Review 1938: A Year of Contrast (U.S. 1938\, 11 min.\, 35mm)\, This Theatre and You (Felix Jacoves\, U.S. 1949\, 8 min.\, 35mm)\, The History and Development of the 35mm Projector (Don Malkames\, U.S. 1956\, 24 min.\, 35mm)\, Let's Go to the Movies (Tholen Gladden\, U.S. 1948\, 9 min.\, 35mm)\, History Brought to Life (Jerry Hopper\, U.S. 1951\, 9 min.\, 35mm)\, The Film That Was Lost (Sammy Lee\, U.S. 1942\, 9 min.\, 35mm)\, and Dancing in the Street (U.S. 1985\, 4 min.\, 35mm). \nThe way we watch movies has changed greatly over the years—from the films we watch and how we watch them\, to the spaces where we watch them and even the reason we watch them. Once a staple of the moviegoing experience\, short films like those in this program—meant to be shown in a theater to a large audience—are relatively unknown to younger audiences today. Many people have likely never seen newsreels\, cartoons\, serials\, or educational short films in a theater. Many may not realize that cartoons were originally made for adults\, and that most were series following familiar characters who could do things that would not have been allowed on the screen if done by live people. This program includes a cartoon from a very popular character that continued to be featured in his own series of adventures in theaters for many years. The newsreel was used for decades as a method of informing the public of interesting and entertaining stories. We will show a Paramount News Review of 1938\, part of the Paramount series that would travel with films at the beginning of each year and review major stories from the previous year\, rather than being based on a weekly series like many newsreels. The program also contains several educational shorts on history and motion pictures\, and it ends with a theatrical music video distributed to commercial theaters by Eastman Kodak Company for use as a promotion for the Live Aid benefit concert. These treasures from the Eastman House collection will be presented by Ed Stratmann\, associate curator\, Moving Image Department. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-29]

SUMMARY:La vie de Jésus (The Life of Jesus) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La vie de Jésus (The Life of Jesus\, Bruno Dumont\, France 1997\, 108 min.\, 35mm\, French w/ subtitles). \nAt the time of its release\, Bruno Dumont's debut feature arrived as something of a paradox. On the one hand\, the film delved into unexplored territory (at least for mainstream art cinema) by portraying sexual intercourse between its main actors without the use of prosthetics or other forms of cinematic trickery. But The Life of Jesus did not provoke the level of controversy one might expect from such a work\, or from its director\, who would later be one of the filmmakers associated with the so-called "New French Extremity." Largely bypassing their usual hysterics\, critics lauded Dumont's film for its understated tone and frank depiction of the day-to-day existence of its troubled protagonist Freddy (David Douche) and his girlfriend Marie (Marjorie Cottreel). Much like the great French director Robert Bresson before him\, Dumont cast non-professional actors in many of the film's parts\, and mostly eschewed camera movement\, flashy visual compositions\, and non-diegetic music. But despite its limpid and even dour execution\, The Life of Jesus is a sensitive film that finds grace in aspects of life that art often passes over. For this\, it is a stirring work. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-15]
