SUMMARY:Yellow Sky screening (2015-Jun-15 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Yellow Sky (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1948\, 98 min.\, 35mm). \nA gang of bank-robbing bandits\, led by the feared outlaw Stretch (Gregory Peck)\, flee from a posse into a desert to find refuge in a ghost town populated only by an ancient gold digger and his tomboy granddaughter (Anne Baxter). "A wonderfully disorienting cinematic experience. Part-western but also part-noir\, style is key in Yellow Sky\, as Wellman highlights the expansive landscapes with disjointed camera angles\, too-close-for-comfort close-ups\, and high-contrast black and white photography. You see and feel the space and\, after a misleadingly jovial theme song that leads into a brief cue from Oh Susanna\, you also hear it\, as Wellman strips the movie of any soundtrack except the uncomfortable sound of silence. Peck\, Widmark\, and any horse caught on camera are at the center of the action\, but it's Anne Baxter that steals the show. As the only woman in the picture\, she's typical of many of Wellman's women of the 1940s and 1950s\, a no holds barred frontier women using her body as a means of achieving a life of her own choosing." — Il cinema ritrovato \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Tightrope screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Tightrope (Richard Tuggle\, U.S. 1984\, 115 min.\, 35mm). \nJames Card's famously inclusive approach to film curation was firmly rooted in his own broad personal taste. Case in point: Card's great admiration for Clint Eastwood\, a "genre" actor and filmmaker whose work\, Card realized early on\, often transcended mere formula. Exquisitely shot by Eastwood's longtime cinematographer Bruce Surtees and directed by Richard Tuggle (although it's said Eastwood\, having grown impatient with Tuggle's slow pace\, eventually took over)\, this twisty—and twisted—thriller works as both a gripping neo-noir and a disturbing psychological portrait of a cop who's begun to lose his moral center. Eastwood is excellent as Wes Block\, a tormented New Orleans police detective hunting for a sadistic serial killer in the nocturnal underbelly of the Big Sleazy—a terrain Block knows a bit too well. As the body count rises\, the killer's emerging profile becomes a dark reflection of Block's own distorted desires. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Blonde Redhead\, Talk In Tongues
DESCRIPTION:Blonde Redhead has always been a band that innovates with each album. They challenge themselves with each recording situation\, and the results have been stunning every time. Their music is always inspired by the same emotions\, but their tastes and ways they choose to execute those emotions are constantly evolving. It was the early conversations about how to make this record that led the band to work with the up and coming Swedish duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Henrik von Sivers and Peder Mannerfelt) as producers on the record. Drew Brown (Radiohead\, Beck) also came on board to record the tracks that would eventually be used in Stockholm. \nLos Angeles foursome Talk In Tongues didn't come out of nowhere\, although it sounded that way when their debut single "Still Don't Seem To Care" suddenly appeared online. And it felt that way for them at the beginning\, too\, when each member was a refugee from another band that just wasn't working right. Back then\, they were barely acquaintances—guitarist and singer Mccoy Kirgo remembers seeing his future bandmates at shows in their other bands\, and then at parties after the shows. And if you looked into the music they'd already made\, it didn't quite make sense for them to put a band together. (Future bassist Waylon Rector wrote constantly\, but all his songs were laptop-made synth-pop.) \n [source: Waiting Room website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Battleground screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Battleground (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1949\, 118 min.\, 35mm). \nReturning to the territory he charted with The Story of G.I. Joe\, Wellman crafts another deeply humanistic\, documentary-like portrayal of American soldiers during the Second World War as vulnerable humans\, and not heroic killing machines. Restrained almost to the point of neorealism\, Battleground again follows a single company (327th Glider Infantry Regiment\, 101st Airborne Division) as they simply try to survive the notorious Battle of the Bulge. "And William Wellman . . . has done a tremendous job of making all the action—and reaction—plausible. In settings of striking realism\, he has got the 'look' of that wintry battleground. And the split-second timing of his actors has made them utterly true to the life of 'Joe.' Among his masculine performers (there is only one girl\, Denise Darcel\, in a small role)\, it is difficult to make a selection of those who merit special praise. James Whitmore is magnificently shaggy and laconic as a veteran 'top kick\,' and Douglas Fowley does a dandy job of playing a constant griper with a set of loose store-teeth. Van Johnson is honestly appealing as a wise-cracking\, scrounging rifleman\, and John Hodiak and George Murphy are solid as older and quieter men." — New York Times\, 1949 \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Angst vor der Angst (Fear of Fear) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Angst vor der Angst (Fear of Fear\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1975\, 88 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles). \nMargot's (Margit Carstensen) and Kurt's (Ulrich Faulhaber) marriage happens smoothly and without much ado but also without great emotion—an inconspicuous relationship of the type one tends to call harmonic. Margot and Kurt live in Kurt's mother's (Brigitte Mira) house\, where his sister (Irm Hermann) and her husband (Armin Meier) live as well. This is a source of friction\, sometimes even open conflicts\, especially when the mother forcefully intrudes into Margot's life. Since funds will be limited until Kurt finishes evening classes\, these conditions are accepted\, even by Margot: One must try to fit in and one must learn to subordinate oneself if circumstance so demands\, even for the sake of losing your mind. A claustrophobic\, intense psychological study of a housewife that breaks under pressure and slowly drifts into insanity. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-15]

SUMMARY:All the Ships at Sea screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen All the Ships at Sea (Dan Sallitt\, U.S. 2004\, 64 min.\, digital). \nIn the wake of a traumatic expulsion from a mysterious cult\, Virginia (Edith Meeks) passes the days at a lakeside retreat in Northern Pennsylvania with her sister Evelyn (Strawn Bovee). "This project was inspired by the wish to work again with Strawn Bovee and Edith Meeks\, and by the thought that the two seemed as if they could be sisters: though Strawn is a California girl born and bred\, both actors suggest a New England composure and reserve. Writing for actors one knows is a great advantage when making a low-budget film that would not otherwise be assured of proper casting. The differences between Strawn and Edith also shaped the plot: Strawn has a marvelously lucid face that points like an arrow to the object of her thoughts; whereas Edith is infinitely complex and swallowed up\, impossible ever to fathom fully. The film starts with these parameters and then gradually reverses them\, so that the readable character increases her mystery and vice versa. The theme of religion was on my mind at the time: to a large extent the religious conflict of the film is really a political conflict\, with Strawn representing the pragmatism required of those who actually run the world\, and Edith the idealism that provides the motive force for change." — Dan Sallitt \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-15]
