SUMMARY:Men with Wings screening (2015-May-31 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:At 2 p.m. Sunday and on Monday at 1:30 p.m.'s Senior Matinée screening\, the Dryden will screen Men with Wings (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1938\, 105 min.\, 35mm). \n"Men with Wings is a giant bomber from the Paramount hangar\, designed on a lavish scale by the skilled air picture mechanic\, William A. Wellman\, and polished off beautifully in Technicolor. The action scenes\, including a dogfight in the air\, are exceptionally impressive. While the romance\, involving three people\, is subjugated to the story of the development of aviation from Kitty Hawk\, NC\, in 1903 down to the present\, the love interest is never left very far in the background. Story stems from the beginning of aviation when the Wright brothers got off the ground at Kitty Hawk 35 years ago. It opens on the refusal of a small-town editor to believe the story of a breathless reporter that he had just seen a man fly. History is that this reporter's story\, placed on the wires and scooping the world\, was used by only three newspapers when filed. In this first scene the three kids of the picture\, who grow up into Fred Macmurray\, Ray Milland\, and Louise Campbell\, are charmingly pictured in an effort to fly with a kite\, successful as it happens. Action progresses through various stages of Wellman's aviation cavalcade down to the last\, MacMurray leaving his wife (Campbell) and baby again for the Sino-Jap war." — Variety\, 1937 \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-25]

SUMMARY:Limited Partnership screening
DESCRIPTION:At 7 p.m.\, the Little will screen Limited Partnership (Thomas G. Miller\, U.S. / Australia 2014\, 74 min.) followed by a discussion with director Thomas G. Miller\, and Linda Moroney. \nFilipino American Richard Adams and Australian Tony Sullivan met in 1971 in Los Angeles and quickly fell in love. In April 1975\, thanks to a courageous county clerk in Boulder\, CO\, they became one of the first same-sex couples in the world to be legally married. Richard immediately filed for a green card for Tony based on their marriage. But unlike most heterosexual married couples who easily file petitions and obtain green cards\, Richard received a denial letter from the Immigration and Naturalization Service stating\, "You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots." \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2015-May-28]

SUMMARY:Let the Fire Burn screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Flying Squirrel is a screening of the evocative and even-handed Let the Fire Burn (Jason Osder\, U.S. 2013\, 95 min.) as part of the Monday Mayhem programming. \nIn the astonishingly gripping Let the Fire Burn\, director Jason Osder has crafted that rarest of cinematic objects: a found-footage film that unfurls with the tension of a great thriller. On May 13\, 1985\, a longtime feud between the city of Philadelphia and controversial radical urban group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By order of local authorities\, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVE-occupied rowhouse. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated—and resulted in the tragic deaths of eleven people (including five children) and the destruction of 61 homes. It was only later discovered that authorities decided to "…let the fire burn." Using only archival news coverage and interviews\, first-time filmmaker Osder has brought to life one of the most tumultuous and largely forgotten clashes between government and citizens in modern American history. \n [source: Rochester Indymedia website\, 2015-May-25]

SUMMARY:Lonesome screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Lonesome (Paul Fejos\, U.S. 1928\, 69 min.\, 35mm). \nIt's the classic story of boy-meets-girl\, both lonely but not alone\, cyphers lost among the bustle of the big city until at last fate brings them together. They share a brief moment of utter joy (in this case at Coney Island) before being torn apart again to go back to their lives. The style\, however\, is not classical at all. Director Fejos uses double exposure\, quick edits\, and a carefully designed color palette to create a contrast between the industrial city and the oasis of the amusement park. Produced at a time of great change\, the sound design is also important\, particularly the repeated use of Irving Berlin's "Always\," and features three talking sequences\, added after the entire film had been shot silent. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-25]

SUMMARY:The Dog screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 6:30 p.m.\, the Little will screen the fascinating documentary The Dog (Allison Berg\, Frank Keraudren\, U.S. 2013\, 100 min.) as part of The Best of the Fests series. \nIf you've seen Sidney Lumet's classic film Dog Day Afternoon\, you know the story of John Wojtowicz\, the man (played in the film by Al Pacino) who attempted to rob a bank to finance his lover's sex-change surgery. The result was a disastrous day-long standoff between the robbers and the police\, ending with Wojtowicz spending five years in prison. In reality\, there is far more to the story than that singular event. … \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-May-28]

SUMMARY:Boven is het stil (It's All So Quiet) screening
DESCRIPTION:At 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Boven is het stil (It's All So Quiet\, Nanouk Leopold\, Netherlands/Germany 2013\, 93 min.\, DCP\, Dutch w/subtitles). \nHelmer\, a single farmer in his fifties\, lives with his aged\, bedridden father in the Dutch countryside. His working days are marked by the visits of milk collector Johan\, a man of his own age for whom Helmer holds a secret fascination. One day Helmer decides to renovate the house\, buying himself a new double bed and moving his father upstairs. His life gains even more momentum when adolescent farmhand Henk comes to help him out. The late Jeroen Willems\, in his final leading role for the big screen\, turns in a powerful\, slow-burn performance. In this battle of wills between two powerful personalities—the father\, once domineering and now in decline\, and the son\, preparing to live his own life when his father is gone—what is left unsaid takes precedence over dialogue. But when unexpected words do come to Helmer late in the film\, their quiet force is indisputable. Fifth feature by one of the most singular European filmmakers at work today. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-25]

SUMMARY:Nikki Hill
DESCRIPTION:Abilene on the Road and Record Archive present Nikki Hill at the Downstairs Cabaret at Winton Place. \nThose who have seen Carolina girl Nikki Hill sing her ass off agree—this isn't just another newcomer on the scene\, this is a…"whiplash" moment. Where did the fireball come from? Why haven't I heard of her before? If you haven't heard of Nikki Hill yet\, you soon will\, and once you see her perform\, you won't forget her. Hill and her band have been touring extensively following the indie release of her debut album "Here's Nikki Hill" in 2013\, leaving jaws on the floor along the way. \n [source: Abilene website\, 2015-May-25]

SUMMARY:Brothers screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 6:30 p.m.\, the Little will screen Brothers (Igaal Niddam\, Switzerland\, 116 min.) as part of The Best of the Fests series. \nThe differences between Dan and [Aharon]\, Argentine brothers with opposing religious philosophies\, come to a head when the deeply religious [Aharon] travels to Jerusalem and\, for the first time in 25 years\, encounters Dan\, a shepherd who lives on a secular kibbutz in southern Israel. [Aharon]\, a distinguished NYC attorney and a Torah scholar\, has been asked to defend the right of Orthodox yeshiva students to be exempt from military service\, a case that mirrors the intense struggle between Israel's religious and political principles. As might be expected\, the brothers cannot understand each other's values or convictions. Their complex story touches on what it means to be Jewish and delves into Israel's ongoing debate about separating "state" from religion. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-May-28]

SUMMARY:My So-Called Enemy screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 6:30 p.m.\, the Little will screen My So-Called Enemy (Lisa Gossels\, U.S. 2010\, 89 min.) as part of The Best of the Fests series followed by a discussion with director Lisa Gossels. \nAdi\, Gal\, Hanin\, Inas\, Rawan and Rezan — six Israeli and Palestinian teenagers — first meet at a women's leadership program in the U.S. called Building Bridges for Peace. Their commitment to justice and mutual understanding as the conflict continues to rage in their homeland leads these "enemies" to see each other as human beings. By following these remarkable women over the next seven years\, this award-winning\, coming-of-age film presents the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the human lens\, and opens our eyes to the personal\, political and physical borders that stand in the way of conflict resolution in this post-9/11 world. Filmmaker Lisa Gossels' inspiring documentary offers profound messages about tolerance\, inclusion and respect\, and about what it takes to create a lasting peace. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-May-28]

SUMMARY:Händler der vier Jahreszeiten (The Merchant of Four Seasons) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Händler der vier Jahreszeiten (The Merchant of Four Seasons\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1971\, 88 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles) tonight at 8 p.m. \nSet in West Germany in the years following the Second World War\, The Merchant of Four Seasons follows Hans Epp (Hans Hirschmüller)\, who returns home after serving in the French Foreign Legion to a family and society with which he feels deeply at odds. Hans and his wife Irmgard (Irm Hermann) run a modest fruit stand\, but when Hans suffers a serious heart attack\, his wife must tend to the business alone. As the events of their lives become progressively more cataclysmic\, Hans is haunted by the memories of his troubled duty in the Legion. At once recalling the raw frankness of John Cassavetes and the severe austerity of Robert Bresson\, Fassbinder presents the devastating events of its characters' lives through unspectacular imagery. He cares deeply for the figures that inhabit his films\, but he is never moralizing\, never asking them to be anything other than what they are. The Merchant of Four Seasons cemented its director's international reputation as one of the most gifted auteurs of his generation. Fassbinder was only 27 when he made this remarkable film\, ten years before his untimely death. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-1]

SUMMARY:(In) Voluntary Memories Reception
DESCRIPTION:VSW is hosting a First Friday Reception for (In) Voluntary Memories by Alysia Kaplan\, on display through tomorrow. \nUsing other people's words in conjunction with her images\, Alysia Kapaln is exploring the dilemma of divided historical loyalties: The moment when a memory is no longer poignant or relevant\, when an imagined or tangential remembrance seems more authentic than the one our mind experienced. SUMMARY:The Park Bench screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 9 p.m.\, the Little will screen The Park Bench (Ann LeSchander\, U.S. 2014\, 83 min.) as part of The Best of the Fests series. \nAn unconventional romantic comedy\, The Park Bench mixes live action with gorgeous animation to create a whimsical tale of life and love — and literature. Emily\, a neurotic graduate student studying to be a librarian\, is assigned to tutor Mateo\, a puckish Latino undergrad\, in American Lit. They meet three times a week on a park bench. At first they don't get along\, but when their talk turns from the classics to confessions\, they find themselves drawn to each other. Naturally she has a pharmacist fiancée\, and he has a host of female admirers\, but neither life nor good stories ever run smoothly. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-May-28]
