SUMMARY:La Ronde theatrical performance (2016-Oct-1 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Bread and Water Theatre is hosting a performance of La Ronde by Arthur Schnitzler. \nFirst published for private circulation in Vienna in 1900\, Arthur Schnitzler's famous play looks at the sexual morality and class ideology of his day through a series of sexual encounters between pairs of characters. When published in 1903\, it became an immediate best-seller\, scandalized Viennese society\, and a year later was censored. Schnitzler was accused of pornography and worse. By choosing characters across the social spectrum\, La Ronde offers a powerful view of how sexual contact transgresses boundaries of class. For mature audiences only. No cell phones or cameras allowed in the theatre for this production. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2016-Sep-19]

SUMMARY:Cat On A Hot Tin Roof screening (2016-Oct-1 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (Richard Brooks\, U.S. 1958\, 108 min.\, 16mm). \nOne of the very best of the many film adaptations of Tennessee Williams' plays\, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof received six Oscar nominations and made "mendacity" a household word. Burl Ives stars as Big Daddy\, the cantankerous patriarch of a southern family whose children are forever scheming and screaming as they squabble over the old man's inheritance. More conniving than the others\, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Taylor attempts to provide an heir for the inheritance by pleading to have a child by her husband\, Paul Newman\, whose morbid self-absorption and complete uninterest in his wife's allure signals the much more profound dysfunction of the entire family. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:Ghosts theatrical performance (2016-Oct-1 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen. \nGhosts is a scathing commentary on 19th-century morality\, particularly the repression and delusion of the era. Because of its subject matter\, it immediately generated strong controversy and negative criticism. Now considered a classic\, the play's themes resonate as powerfully as they did 130 years ago\, a testament to Ibsen's writing\, and a sad reflection on the state of the modern world. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:La planète sauvage (Fantastic Planet) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen the incredible and wondrous (and strangely made more exotic by some odd English translation choices) La planète sauvage (Fantastic Planet\, René Laloux\, France/Czechoslovakia 1973\, 72 min.\, French w/subtitles). \nOn the planet Ygam\, ruled by the gigantic blue Draags\, humanlike creatures named the Oms are the enslaved pets of the Draag children. When the Draags decide to exterminate all the Oms\, the little people fight back. This politically and socially aware psychedelic animated sci-fi cult classic evokes both Gulliver's Travels and Planet of the Apes\, and the imagination invested in the surreal creatures\, music and sound design\, and eerie landscapes is immense and unforgettable. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:Cameraperson screening (2016-Oct-4 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Cameraperson (Kirsten Johnson\, U.S. 2016\, 102 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nA boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina; the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at home: these scenes and others are woven into Cameraperson\, a tapestry of footage captured over the twenty-five-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. Through a series of episodic juxtapositions\, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects\, the tension between the objectivity and intervention of the camera\, and the complex interaction of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. A work that combines documentary\, autobiography\, and ethical inquiry\, Cameraperson is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker's personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:The Monkey Talks screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Monkey Talks (Raoul Walsh\, U.S. 1927\, 63 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Makia Matsamura. \nLegendary Hollywood auteur Raoul Walsh (White Heat\, High Sierra) directs this late-period silent film featuring a bizarre love triangle among the performers of a decrepit wagon circus rambling through the French countryside. Olive Borden stars as Olivette\, a beautiful tightrope acrobat with would-be suitors Sam the animal trainer (Don Alvarado) and Jocko the monkey man (Jacques Lerner) vying for her affections. Lerner's mesmerizing performance as Jocko is further enhanced by the astonishing chimpanzee makeup effects crafted Jack Pierce\, who would later gain fame for creating the iconic makeup for Frankenstein's monster and the Wolf Man. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:Artist's Talk: Catherine Opie
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned artist Catherine Opie will speak in conjunction with her exhibition Catherine Opie: 700 Nimes Road. Her work gained attention in the mid-1990s when her photograph Self-Portrait/Pervert\, 1994\, was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art. Since then\, she has been revered for her ability to photograph the intimacy of community\, as it is produced through place\, symbols\, events\, and self-identification. Her photographs record American diversity with both portraits and landscapes. Her unique form of social documentary photography has led her to create work about subjects ranging from lesbian families and San Francisco's S&M community to high school football players and surfers. Her landscape work has addressed strip malls and freeway junctions in Los Angeles\, as well as formal architectural studies in Chicago and New York. Her most recent body of work\, Portraits and Landscapes\, combines the two genres\, drawing upon art historical references such as old master paintings. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:1916: The Irish Rebellion screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen 1916: The Irish Rebellion (Pat Collins\, Ruan Magan\, U.S. / Ireland 2016\, 86 min.) \nNarrated by Liam Neeson\, this landmark documentary tells the dramatic story of the events that took place in Dublin during Easter Week 1916\, when a small group of Irish rebels took on the might of the British Empire. The documentary — featuring a combination of rarely seen archival footage\, new segments filmed on location worldwide\, and interviews with leading international experts — also uncovers the untold story of the central role Irish Americans played in the lead-up to the rebellion. Although defeated militarily\, the men and women of the Easter Rising would wring a moral victory from the jaws of defeat and inspire countless freedom struggles throughout the world — from Ireland to India. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2016-Sep-29]
