SUMMARY:Je rentre à la maison (I'm Going Home) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Je rentre à la maison (I'm Going Home\, Manoel de Oliveira\, France/Portugal 2001\, 90 min.\, 35mm\, French w/ subtitles). \n"With I'm Going Home\, the legendary Manoel de Oliveira\, at the age of 93\, created his masterpiece. The critics have already acclaimed it as one of the finest films of the decade. Warm\, funny\, humane and ultimately heartrending\, the film is a remarkable and supremely eloquent statement by a magnificent director. Gilbert Valence (Michel Piccoli) is a successful theater actor appearing in Eugene Ionesco's Exit the King\, when he learns that his wife\, daughter and son-in-law have been killed in a car accident. Over time\, Valence's life regains a semblance of normalcy—he takes care of his orphaned grandson\, strolls the streets of Paris\, frequents his favorite cafe and returns to the theater as Prospero in The Tempest. Michel Piccoli is majestic in the role of Valence—he is proud\, self-assured\, and amused by the world\, while still vulnerable to life's tragedies." — Richard Brody \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-27]

SUMMARY:The Last Five Years theatrical performance (2015-Jul-31 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the 2002 Drama Desk award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics\, The Last Five Years was written by Tony Award-winner and former Eastman School of Music student\, Jason Robert Brown. It follows New York City couple\, Cathy and Jamie\, who fall in and out of love over the course of their five-year relationship. The show's unconventional structure consists of Jamie's story — told chronologically — and Cathy's story — told backwards — which come together only once in the middle. This emotionally powerful and intimate stage musical\, which was recently made into a feature film starring Pitch Perfect's Anna Kendrick and Smash's Jeremy Jordan\, ingeniously chronicles the rise and fall of a modern marriage. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Jul-27]

SUMMARY:P'tit Quinquin (Li'l Quinquin) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen P'tit Quinquin (Li'l Quinquin\, Bruno Dumont\, France 2014\, 200 min.\, DCP\, French w/ subtitles). \nBruno Dumont's films are no stranger to George Eastman House\, as the Dryden Theatre has previously hosted such austere ruminations on mortality and spirituality as Flanders (Grand Prix\, Cannes Film Festival)\, Hadewijch\, and Camille Claudel 1915. These films—plus works such as The Life of Jesus and Twentynine Palms—cemented Dumont's status as a true enfant terrible of French cinema\, a radical talent whose uncompromising vision has attracted admirers and naysayers of equal ferocity. But now the 57-year-old writer-director has delivered what may prove his masterwork\, a film which nearly all commentators have hailed with unalloyed praise. Dumont deftly executes a stunning left-field turn into darkly hilarious comedy with his made-for-TV epic—a surprise ratings hit in its native land—which borrows equally from David Lynch's Twin Peaks and Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot. When a bumbling police-detective (an astonishing physical performance by Bernard Pruvost) arrives in a small seaside town to investigate a bizarre murder\, he rubs up against a band of urchins led by the irrepressible\, eponymous Quinquin (Cagney-esque newcomer Alane Delhaye) the starting point for an audacious and unpredictable journey into the more bizarre corners of French society and the human psyche. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-27]

SUMMARY:The Goonies screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Goonies (Richard Donner\, U.S. 1985\, 114 min.) as part of the Mondo Movie Series. \nMikey Walsh and Brandon Walsh are brothers whose family is preparing to move because developers want to build a golf course in the place of their neighborhood — unless enough money is raised to stop the construction of the golf course\, and that's quite doubtful. But when Mikey stumbles upon a treasure map of the famed "One-Eyed" Willy's hidden fortune\, Mikey\, Brandon\, and their friends Lawrence "Chunk" Cohen\, Clark "Mouth" Devereaux\, Andrea "Andy" Carmichael\, Stefanie "Stef" Steinbrenner\, and Richard "Data" Wang\, calling themselves The Goonies\, set out on a quest to find the treasure in hopes of saving their neighborhood. SUMMARY:His Girl Friday screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks\, U.S. 1940\, 92 min.\, 35mm). \nHis Girl Friday is a gender-bending version of Hecht and Macarthur's comedy The Front Page. Rosalind Russell plays a breathless whiz of a reporter determined to give up her typewriter for a wedding ring\, but her editor and ex-husband Cary Grant makes it hard for her to leave. The breathlessly delivered gags and dialogue are a signature of master comedy director Howard Hawks. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-27]

SUMMARY:The Last Five Years theatrical performance (2015-Aug-2 @ 2 p.m.)

SUMMARY:Miss Representation screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Miss Representation (Jennifer Siebel Newsom\, Kimberlee Acquaro\, U.S. 2011\, 85 min.); a Metro Justice Film Series Special Screening. \nWritten and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom\, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's portrayals of women and girls\, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2015-Jul-29]

SUMMARY:August Monday Mayhem Meeting screening of The Weather Underground
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Squirrel will host the August Monday Mayhem meeting with a screening of The Weather Underground (Sam Green\, Bill Siegel\, U.S. 2002\, 92 min.) \nIn October 1969 hundreds of young people\, clad in football helmets and wielding lead pipes\, marched through an upscale Chicago shopping district\, pummeling parked cars and smashing shop windows in their path. This was the first demonstration of the Weather Underground's "Days of Rage." Outraged by the Vietnam War and racism in America\, the organization waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s\, bombing the Capitol building\, breaking Timothy Leary out of prison\, and evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history. The Weather Underground is a feature-length documentary that explores the rise and fall of this radical movement\, as former members speak candidly about the idealistic passion that drove them to "bring the war home" and the trajectory that placed them on the FBI's most wanted list. \n [source: Rochester Indymedia website\, 2015-Jul-27]

SUMMARY:Mystery of the Wax Museum screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Mystery of the Wax Museum (Michael Curtiz\, U.S. 1933\, 77 min.\, 35mm). \nAn unorthodox mix of coffins\, comedy\, and makeup that may just be the last word in gruesomeness\, this gorgeous early two-strip Technicolor treatise in hyper-weirdness concerns an insane wax modeler bent on murder and mayhem.
