SUMMARY:Satansbraten (Satan's Brew) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Satansbraten (Satan's Brew\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1976\, 112 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles). \nThe poet Walter Kranz (Kurt Raab) faces a total creative crisis: Once called the "poet of the revolution\," he has not produced a word in two years. What remains are debts\, a haranguing wife (Helen Vita)\, and a dim-witted brother (Volker Spengler) who collects dead flies. But after Kranz kills his rich lover\, the blood in his poetic vein is revitalized. Yet\, the work turns out to be a plagiarism of a poem by Stefan George. This is when Kranz develops the mania to be George himself. The savings of his glowing admirer (Margit Carstensen) permit him to engage young actors who play\, for good pay\, the admiring circle of disciples. Among Kranz's creative exercises is also the attempt to succeed as a homosexual. But then the money is gone\, including the funds Kranz stole from his parents and extracted from a prostitute. The "disciples" disappear. Now Kranz turns totally megalomaniac. Fascist ideas overcome him. There is no way to stop the chaos in the madhouse. And this is only a fragment of madness that ensues when Fassbinder\, for the first and last time\, decides to make a comedy. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Black and Cuba screening
DESCRIPTION:The Baobab will screen Black and Cuba (Robin J. Hayes\, U.S. / Cuba 2013\, 83 min.) as part of the Caribbean Film Festival June 26\, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. \nThis edgy and artful documentary follows a group of predominantly black\, street-smart students at Yale\, who feel like outcasts at the elite Ivy League university\, as they band together and adventure to Cuba to see if revolution is truly possible. While filming their poignant encounters with AfroCuban youth\, breathtaking sites and moving hip-hop performances\, the travelers confront realities behind myths of color-blindness and social mobility. This chronicle of their journey uncovers renewed hope for equality and human rights. The film is the feature directorial debut of Dr. Robin J. Hayes\, international human rights advocate and scholar. \n [source: Baobab website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Honeymoon screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Honeymoon (Dan Sallitt\, U.S. 1998\, 90 min.\, 16mm). \nHoneymoon follows newlyweds Mimi (Edith Meeks) and Michael (Dylan Mccormick) in the turbulent days following their wedding. "This is the most conventionally made film of my career: it had an editor\, a sound editor\, and a colorist; it ran the gamut of labs and technicians. I don't think this industrial approach to filmmaking compromises the results much: there are certainly advantages to working with collaborators as well as risks\, but I simply found it easier to take on these roles myself on later projects. A bigger difference between Honeymoon and my later work might be that the story is based on a concrete turn of events\, whereas my later films are devoted more to states of mind than to occurrences. For this reason\, I worry that I haven't protected Honeymoon's protagonists well enough against the judgments of viewers\, and I sometimes ask audiences to make an effort to maintain sympathy with them. This hasn't been an issue with any other of my films\, which seem to have my own perspectives built into them to a greater extent. I remember being horrified when the idea of this film occurred to me\, and it took me a day to resign myself to the rightness of the project; so I always sympathize when viewers recoil from the events on screen" — Dan Sallitt \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Charlie's Old Goat Run
DESCRIPTION:This is a gorgeous run in which participants negotiate hills\, streams\, rocky outcroppings\, slippery mud boardwalks\, forests\, and lush meadows as each tries to make his or her way to the end. SUMMARY:Ma nuit chez Maud (My Night at Maud's) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ma nuit chez Maud (My Night at Maud's\, Eric Rohmer\, France 1969\, 110 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles). \n"As Eric Rohmer developed his mature style in the late '60s\, he ran into the technical limitations of post-synchronized sound: in 1967's La Collectionneuse\, he fought for aural realism with a Stroheim-like fanaticism\, insisting that all dubbed sounds be geographically accurate. It's not surprising\, then\, that My Night at Maud's\, Rohmer's first film using synchronized sound\, saw him breakthrough to a new and supple style of filming and editing that is still a model for my filmmaking. Like the three Moral Tales that Rohmer had already filmed\, Maud takes as its subject the disjunctures between the worldview of its protagonist (the wonderful Jean-Louis Trintignant) and the entropy of an all-too-real world that refuses to stay within the boundaries that ideology sets for it. But here for the first time Rohmer was able to demonstrate this disjunction with unmediated visual and aural textures. The editing syntax that Rohmer developed uses flexible rhythms that sometimes follow the compelling dialogue and sometimes remain fixed on one half of the room regardless of where the dialogue flows. Without visual splash\, Rohmer allocates to himself the flexibility to shift emphasis back and forth effortlessly between the scene's dramatic values and a documentation of space\, ambience\, and time passing." — Dan Sallitt \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Lafayette Escadrille screening (2015-Jun-28 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lafayette Escadrille (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1958\, 93 min.\, 35mm). \nThe final film in the career of director William A. Wellman is curiously enough perhaps both his most and least personal film. Wellman based the film on his own experience in World War I\, when he joined the French Foreign Legion and was assigned as the first American fighter pilot to help the French dogfight the Germans. But the studio interfered with production so much that Wellman\, dismayed\, quit the film business forever. In spite of all the hassle Lafayette Escadrille\, starring Tab Hunter\, William Wellman Jr.\, and a very young Clint Eastwood\, is still clearly a labor of love\, with protracted scenes of camaraderie and lovemaking as touching and precise as anything Wellman has shot in his illustrious filmmaking career. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Man\, Woman\, and Sin screening\, Philip C. Carli
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Man\, Woman\, and Sin (Monta Bell\, U.S. 1927\, 67 min.\, 16mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli. \nMan\, Woman and Sin is one the silent era's most "personal" films in many ways\, and remains one of MGM's most unusual productions of any period. Based on the poem "The Widow In the Bye-Street" by English Poet Laureate John Masefield\, it was a passionately wished-for project by star John Gilbert\, who plays a naive young reporter whose life is shattered by an affair with the mistress of the newspaper's owner. Distinctively sensitive director Monta Bell brought forth brilliant performances from Gilbert\, veterans Marc Mcdermott and Gladys Brockwell\, and especially the legendary and luminous Jeanne Eagels in one of her very few film appearances. Full of atmosphere\, tension\, and conflicted passions\, this is an extraordinarily "adult" and psychologically complex American film for its time\, and the fullest expression of John Gilbert's intellectual emotionalism as an actor and creator. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]
