SUMMARY:The Game screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen The Game (David Fincher\, U.S. 1997\, 127 min.\, 35mm). \nWhat birthday gift should you give to a man who already has everything? You give him The Game. Tailored specifically to each participant. Think of it as a great vacation\, except you don't go to it\, it comes to you. But what if The Game is more than just a game? "Douglas is the right actor for the role. He can play smart\, he can play cold\, and he can play angry. He is also subtle enough that he never arrives at an emotional plateau before the film does\, and never overplays the process of his inner change. Indeed\, one of the refreshing things about the film is that it stays true to its paranoid vision right up until what seems like the very end—and then beyond it\, so that by the time the real ending arrives\, it's not the payoff and release as much as a final macabre twist of the knife." — Roger Ebert \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-4]

The 30-minute film uncovers the emerging and entrenched faces of poverty in our country — such as the suburban former banker\, who now relies on a food pantry; to an aging career fisherman\, whose shrimping business has been devastated by the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast. \n [source: Baobab website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Yiyun Li lecture
DESCRIPTION:Yiyun Li's debut collection\, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers\, won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award\, Pen/Hemingway Award\, Guardian First Book Award\, and the California Book Award for fiction. Her subsequent works have also won numerous awards including the gold medal of California Book Award for fiction for The Vagrants; finalist of the Story Prize for Gold Boy\, Emerald Girl; and her most recent book Kinder Than Solitude was published to critical acclaim. Other awards include\, Whiting Award\, Lannan Foundation Residency fellow\, 2010 MacArthur Foundation fellow\, and 2014 Benjamin H. Danks Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She has also been selected by Granta as one of the 21 Best Young American Novelists under 35 and by The New Yorker as one of the top 20 writers under 40. Yiyun Li is also a contributing editor to the Brooklyn-based literary magazine\, A Public Space. The New York Times says\, "There's something about the poise\, the tidiness\, the seemingly effortless calm of Yiyun Li's writing that makes it easy to see her as an author who\, like Jhumpa Lahiri\, employs a Chekhovian neutrality to give the complicated\, messy\, ostensibly 'colorful' lives of her characters a kind of unthreatening watercolor ambience." \n [source: Rochester Arts & Lectures series website\, 2015-May-13]

SUMMARY:The Trespasser screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Trespasser (Edmund Goulding\, U.S. 1929\, 90 min.\, 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m. \nClass difference and moral issues intertwine in this stark social drama starring Gloria Swanson. A stenographer who falls in love with the son of an aristocratic and wealthy family\, Swanson finds herself alone and pregnant when the elopement is annulled by her father-in-law (perfectly portrayed by character actor William Holden). In order to survive\, Swanson finds herself with a new protector . . . and at the center of scandal. Shot in only 21 days\, this film marked Swanson's sound debut\, and she not only bowled over the critics with her acting\, but also surprised everyone with the strength of her impressive singing abilities. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Practicing Godot performance
DESCRIPTION:Two actresses meet each other for the first rehearsal of an all-female production of the famed playwaiting for Godot\, but their different backgrounds may throw them and the show out of control — then there's the neurotic stage manager who would rather be anywhere else and the veteran star who gets called in to sort it all out… \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Lambert and Stamp screening
DESCRIPTION:At this afternoon's 3:30 p.m. screening of Lambert and Stamp (James D. Cooper\, U.S. 2014\, 117 min.)\, one of the producers—my guess is Douglas Graves—will be on hand to discuss the film. \nEarly 1960s London: the postwar generation who grew up playing in air raid shelters and bomb sites is detonating a youth rebellion that brings Hesiod's words back to life. At London's Shepperton Studios\, two young 2nd assistant directors compare notes on film\, music\, and frustrated ambitions\, forging an unlikely friendship and collaboration that leaves an indelible mark on pop music and culture of the '60s and beyond. Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp\, aspiring filmmakers\, set out to make a cinema vérité documentary about the mod world of rock and roll\, but get sidetracked instead into managing and developing the sonic powerhouse that came to be called The Who. Their gorgeously propulsive footage-the rock documentary that was never completed-lays a foundation for director James D. Cooper's kaleidoscopic study of an era and a rare friendship's creative bond. Present-day interviews with the surviving principals\, now grown older\, reflect thoughtfully on their relationships and life trajectories. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2015-May-13]

SUMMARY:50\,000\,000 Jacobeans Can't Be Wrong: Shakespeare's Greatest Hits—Volume 2 performance
DESCRIPTION:ShakeCo presents 50\,000\,000 Jacobeans Can't Be Wrong: Shakespeare's Greatest Hits—Volume 2 at the MuCCC starting at 4 p.m. \nThe canon of Shakespeare's plays runs to a grand total of thirty-eight works. (Or thirty-nine…or forty — I mean\, how do you feel about "Edward III"?) But in all those plays\, two rise to the top: "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet". Well\, we're not going to do those two\, because we did them last year. But this year\, we've got two more of Shakespeare's best and you can come see five brave souls portray every speaking character (yes every speaking character) in every scene (yes\, every scene) in those two plays. And all in about an hour… \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Ali: Fear Eats the Soul screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Angst essen Seele auf\, Rainer Werner Fassbinder\, West Germany 1974\, 94 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles) tonight at 8 p.m. \nOne night\, Emmi (Brigitte Mira)\, an aging cleaning woman\, wanders into an unfamiliar bar during a downpour. She ends up dancing with a young Moroccan guest worker named Ali (El Hedi ben Salem). Soon they are close friends\, then lovers\, then they decide to be married\, despite their near 20 year age difference. For Emmi's family and co-workers\, the marriage is a complete disgrace\, for Ali's friends\, its bewildering. The prejudices of race\, age\, and class the two confront in the face of their marriage only proves to strengthen their relationship. It's when they rejoin their respective social worlds that conflict and heartbreak arises. To say Ali: Fear Eats the Soul is a remake of Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows\, in which an older woman falls for her younger gardener to her children and her friends' disgust\, is to simplify the unique power of both films. While delicate in its treatment of tenderness and love\, Fassbinder places the story in the brutal world of the city\, where the characters cannot escape their confined surroundings\, and violence boils just under the surface. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]
