SUMMARY:Book Discussion: "White fragility : why it's so hard to talk to white people about racism" by Robin DiAngelo
DESCRIPTION:Small World Books will host a discussion of White fragility : why it's so hard to talk to white people about racism by Robin DiAngelo. \nJoin Founder/Executive Director in an informal and thought provoking chat around socially conscious books that are must reads for anyone doing or interested in social and race activism work. Robin DiAngelo\, lecturer at the University of Washington\, created the term "white fragility". She has noted that "white privilege can be thought of as unstable racial equilibrium".When this equilibrium is challenged\, the resulting racial stress can become intolerable and trigger a range of defensive responses. DiAngelo defines these behaviors as white fragility. (Source: Wikipedia) \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Sep-10]

SUMMARY:Ben-Hur screening (2018-Sep-18 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ben-Hur (Fred Niblo\, U.S. 1925\, 143 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nThe most expensive spectacle of its time\, this film tells the familiar story of Judah Ben-Hur (matinee idol Ramon Novarro) in the early days of Christianity. His wealthy family is persecuted for their faith by the Romans\, including Judah's childhood friend Messala. Following an accident\, Judah is sentenced to life as a galley slave and separated from his family. He seeks to find a way to escape\, exact his revenge\, and find his sister and mother. The massive sea battle scene and the famous chariot race are the centerpieces of this epic tale that still resonates almost a hundred years later. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-10]

SUMMARY:Woody Pines musical performance
DESCRIPTION:If you're wondering where the music of Nashville troubadour Woody Pines comes from\, look to the streets. It was on the streets as a professional busker that Woody first cut his teeth\, drawing liberally from the lost back alley anthems and scratchy old 78s of American roots music\, whether country blues\, jugband\, hokum\, or hillbilly. Heavy rollicking street performances are the key to some of today's best roots bands\, like Old Crow Medicine Show (Woody and Ocms' Gill Landry used to tour the country in their own jugband)\, and they're the key to Woody's intensely catchy rhythms\, jumpy lyrics\, and wildly delirious sense of fun. Woody traveled all over the streets of this country\, road testing his songs\, drawing from the catchiest elements of the music he loved and adding in hopped-up vintage electrification to get that old country dancehall sound down right. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-Sep-10]

SUMMARY:Proč UNESCO? (Why UNESCO?)\, Sen noci svatojánské (A Midsummer Night's Dream) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Proč UNESCO? (Why UNESCO?\, Jiri Trnka\, Czechoslovakia 1958\, 10 min.\, 35mm\, Czech w/subtitles)\, and Sen noci svatojánské (A Midsummer Night's Dream\, Jiri Trnka\, Czechoslovakia 1959\, 72 min.\, 35mm\, English version) as part of the Animation of Jiri Trnka series. \nComing near the end of Trnka's career\, A Midsummer Night's Dream is likely his best-known work. This bewitching adaptation of Shakespeare's romantic fairy tale is a masterpiece of surpassing balletic beauty that plays out amidst a garlanded pastel dreamscape. Preceded by Why UNESCO?\, a short commissioned by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific\, and Cultural Organization\, which employs strikingly simple animation to make the case that all of humanity is enriched when we tear down the walls that separate us. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-10]

SUMMARY:Caroline Rose musical performance
DESCRIPTION:An obsession with money\, an unfaithful lover\, a friend's accidental pregnancy\, misogyny\, loneliness\, death… This is just some of the lighthearted subject matter that make up Loner—the darkly comedic second album from songwriter/producer Caroline Rose. Armed with an arsenal of new instruments and equipment\, an ever-growing sense of "ahhh fuck it\," two years of exploration\, and a wicked sense of humor\, Rose delivers a set of serious songs wrapped in a sprightly\, angsty pop burrito. Because\, as Rose puts it\, "Sometimes sad songs just need a cocktail." Loner captures the cheeky satire\, comical musings\, and often jarring mood swings——sometimes goofy\, sometimes emotional——that make up much of Rose's personality. "I call it Schizodrift\," she says sipping on a martini with her pinky out. "I want to make music that sounds as manic as I feel." Filled with catchy synth hooks\, Ray Manzarek-esque Farfisa\, surf guitar\, depth of thought and a punk attitude\, Loner captures the energy of bands like Le Tigre and The Cramps\, and nods to the styles of Blondie and Devo\, the pop hooks of icons like Justin Timberlake\, all the while being inspired by the artistry of Kate Bush. "I'd say this album was as much inspired by Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as it was late 70s punk." \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-Sep-10]

SUMMARY:September Meeting of The Photographic Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:The September 20 TPHS meeting will Not be held at VSW in the evening. We are meeting on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Rochester Historical Society\, at 121 Lincoln Ave\, on the west side of the city. Our tour guide is historian Dan Cody. The museum is fascinating\, with early Rochesterians' oil portraits\, WW1 Posters\, early Rochester pioneer's information\, clothing (including Susan B. Anthony's burgundy traveling dress)\, an historic piano and one of the Fox sisters' table used for "tapping" for seances. When you get to Lincoln Ave\, if you see a small church with the number 121 on it\, pull behind it to the original home of Eastman Kodak's former Lincoln Plant. This plant still has the chain-link fence with barbed wire on top\, as it was the top-secret location for the building of spy satellites. In fact\, the room with two basketball courts in the rec center in the back of the building was once the largest "clean room" in the Eastern US! \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Sep-17]

SUMMARY:Intruder in the Dust screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Intruder in the Dust (Clarence Brown\, U.S. 1949\, 87 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Reinventing Hollywood series. \nThis rarely seen adaptation of the mystery novel by William Faulkner investigates racism and justice in the mid-century South. When a black landowner is falsely charged with the murder of a white lumberman\, it's up to an unlikely band to defend him. A black teen\, a white teen and his lawyer uncle\, and an elderly woman come together to prove the landowner's innocence and bring the true murderer to justice. While providing a social message\, the film also highlights the importance of mystery to 1940s cinema and utilizes the flashback technique. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-17]
