DESCRIPTION:Today at 2 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Kes (Ken Loach\, U.K. 1969\, 110 min.\, 35mm). \nDirector Ken Loach received international acclaim for this enormously moving tale of a lonely working-class Yorkshire boy\, who turns from a life of comic books and shoplifting when he finds a baby falcon and decides to raise and train it. "I saw Kes at film school and I knew then that I'd willingly make coffee for Ken Loach." — Krzysztof Kieslowski "One of the best\, the warmest\, the most moving films of recent years." — Roger Ebert \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-4]

SUMMARY:Citizen Kane screening (2015-May-11 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Today at 1:30 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Citizen Kane (Orson Welles\, U.S. 1941\, 119 min.\, 35mm) for the Senior Matinee. \nOrson Welles\, born 100 years ago today [sic]\, stars as Charles Foster Kane in his classic first feature\, a thinly disguised interpretation of the life of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. The 25-year-old director took complete advantage of the freedom given to him by RKO Studios\, breaking narrative and visual conventions while blazing new paths along the way. Welles also won an Academy Award for his screenplay\, an honor shared with Herman J. Mankiewicz. Kane is still influencing filmmakers to this day\, and is considered by many critics and audiences to be the greatest film ever made. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-4]

SUMMARY:An Honest Liar screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 7 p.m.\, the Little will screen An Honest Liar (Tyler Measom\, Justin Weinstein\, U.S. / Spain / Italy / Canada 2014\, 90 min.) followed by a Videconference Q&A with documentary subject James "The Amazing" Randi. \nFor the last half-century\, James "The Amazing" Randi has entertained millions of people around the world with his remarkable feats of magic\, escape and trickery. Schooled in the techniques of deception\, Randi saw his beloved magician's tricks being used by faith healers\, fortune-tellers\, and psychics — not for entertainment\, but to steal money from innocent people and destroy lives. Enraged by this\, he dedicated his life to exposing those frauds\, and would do so with the wit and style of the great showman that he is. A self-described liar\, cheat\, and charlatan\, Randi embarked on a mission for truth by perpetrating a series of unparalleled investigations and elaborate hoaxes. These grand schemes fooled scientists\, the media\, and a gullible public\, but always with a deeper goal of demonstrating the importance of evidence and the dangers of magical thinking. In one of these acts\, he transformed his partner\, Jose Alvarez\, into a fake guru named "Carlos" to show how easily people can be fooled. His work exposing faith healers won him the prestigious Macarthur "Genius" Award in 1987. \n[source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-May-4]

SUMMARY:Basic Instinct screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Basic Instinct (Paul Verhoeven\, Us/France 1992\, 125 min.\, 35mm). \nScripted by Joe Eszterhas (Jagged Edge) and starring Michael Douglas\, Verhoeven's glossy pulp shocker stands as the ne plus ultra of the '80s/'90s erotic thriller. It was also one of the most controversial—and successful—hollywood movies of the 1990s. Based on hearsay about the film's content—gratuitous sex\, over-the-top violence\, and the depiction of bisexual women as murderous\, man-hating psychopaths—protests against the film erupted even before shooting had finished. The eventual release did little to settle qualms\, and this lurid tale of a successful crime novelist (Sharon Stone\, famously sans culottes) who may have or may not have disposed of a one-night stand with an ice pick continues to annoy\, fascinate\, and liberate—all in equal measure. A paranoid male fantasy? A feminist parable of female empowerment? Both? \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-4]

SUMMARY:The Game screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen The Game (David Fincher\, U.S. 1997\, 127 min.\, 35mm). \nWhat birthday gift should you give to a man who already has everything? You give him The Game. Tailored specifically to each participant. Think of it as a great vacation\, except you don't go to it\, it comes to you. But what if The Game is more than just a game? "Douglas is the right actor for the role. He can play smart\, he can play cold\, and he can play angry. He is also subtle enough that he never arrives at an emotional plateau before the film does\, and never overplays the process of his inner change. Indeed\, one of the refreshing things about the film is that it stays true to its paranoid vision right up until what seems like the very end—and then beyond it\, so that by the time the real ending arrives\, it's not the payoff and release as much as a final macabre twist of the knife." — Roger Ebert \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-4]

SUMMARY:The Line screening and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Starting at 7 p.m. at the Baobab is a screening of The Line (Linda Midgett\, U.S. 2012\, 30 min.) followed by a discussion with Ann Johnson\, and Ed Doherty. \nThe Line is a groundbreaking documentary chronicling the new face of poverty in America. The 30-minute film uncovers the emerging and entrenched faces of poverty in our country — such as the suburban former banker\, who now relies on a food pantry; to an aging career fisherman\, whose shrimping business has been devastated by the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast. \n [source: Baobab website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Violet performance (2015-May-14 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:As a girl\, Violet was involved in a tragic accident leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved\, she's traveling across the deep south in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist that she hopes can make her beautiful. The scars lie deeper than the skin – but on the bus journey her fellow riders\, including a young African-American solider teach her about beauty\, love\, courage\, and what it means to be an outsider. With a score of show-stopping anthems ranging from American roots to folk to gospel\, Violet is a thought provoking musical that challenges you to look beyond the surface. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-Apr-27]

SUMMARY:Yiyun Li lecture
DESCRIPTION:Yiyun Li's debut collection\, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers\, won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award\, Pen/Hemingway Award\, Guardian First Book Award\, and the California Book Award for fiction. Her subsequent works have also won numerous awards including the gold medal of California Book Award for fiction for The Vagrants; finalist of the Story Prize for Gold Boy\, Emerald Girl; and her most recent book Kinder Than Solitude was published to critical acclaim. Other awards include\, Whiting Award\, Lannan Foundation Residency fellow\, 2010 MacArthur Foundation fellow\, and 2014 Benjamin H. Danks Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She has also been selected by Granta as one of the 21 Best Young American Novelists under 35 and by The New Yorker as one of the top 20 writers under 40. Yiyun Li is also a contributing editor to the Brooklyn-based literary magazine\, A Public Space. The New York Times says\, "There's something about the poise\, the tidiness\, the seemingly effortless calm of Yiyun Li's writing that makes it easy to see her as an author who\, like Jhumpa Lahiri\, employs a Chekhovian neutrality to give the complicated\, messy\, ostensibly 'colorful' lives of her characters a kind of unthreatening watercolor ambience." \n [source: Rochester Arts & Lectures series website\, 2015-May-13]

SUMMARY:The Trespasser screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Trespasser (Edmund Goulding\, U.S. 1929\, 90 min.\, 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m. \nClass difference and moral issues intertwine in this stark social drama starring Gloria Swanson. A stenographer who falls in love with the son of an aristocratic and wealthy family\, Swanson finds herself alone and pregnant when the elopement is annulled by her father-in-law (perfectly portrayed by character actor William Holden). In order to survive\, Swanson finds herself with a new protector . . . and at the center of scandal. Shot in only 21 days\, this film marked Swanson's sound debut\, and she not only bowled over the critics with her acting\, but also surprised everyone with the strength of her impressive singing abilities. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]
