SUMMARY:The Bishop's Wife screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Bishop's Wife (Henry Koster\, U.S. 1947\, 109 min.\, 35mm). \nCome Christmastime\, Bishop Brougham (David Niven) finds his life in tatters: he can't come up with the funds for a new cathedral\, and his wife (Loretta Young) seems to be losing faith in their marriage. Enter Dudley (Cary Grant)\, an angel who has been sent down in answer to the prelate's prayers—but is this divine being getting a little too close to the bishop's wife? A delightful reminder of the days when Hollywood could make a faith-themed film with style\, The Bishop's Wife is a charming classic. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:Swimming to Cambodia theatrical performance (2015-Dec-19 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:In 1983\, actor Spalding Gray was cast in the Vietnam War-set drama "The Killing Fields." This would inspire him to craft a monologue about his experiences making the film\, along with personal memories of the war and life in New York City. It would later be made as a highly-acclaimed film in 1987\, directed by Jonathan Demme. "Swimming to Cambodia" was staged by Aspie Works during the Rochester Fringe Festival in September\, with label founder Justin Rielly starring. Rielly will reprise the play for this encore two-night staged reading run of Gray's landmark work. After the December 18 performance\, a post-show discussion will follow\, with an appearance by Kathleen Russo\, the widow of Spalding Gray. She prepared the adaptation of Swimming to Cambodia being performed\, along with other stage adaptations of her late husband's work. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:Bake Sale for the House of Mercy
DESCRIPTION:Last Christmas\, angered and inspired by the city's harsh treatment of our homeless population at tent city\, a bake sale was held on the fly prior to the holidays for people to purchase cookies for $10 a tin. Over $150 was raised and 100% of that went to the House of Mercy. This year\, let's keep up the trend! As opposed to last year\, the bake sale will be held on one day only at Earthling Supply Co. I'm going to bake a variety of cookies and treats with gluten free and vegan options. Bring your own tin/container and fill it up for $10. If you want to flex your baking skills\, bring a tray of treats to add to the mix! The more the merrier. Please also bring a card with ingredients for those with allergies. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:Meet Me in St. Louis screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Meet Me in St. Louis (Vincente Minnelli\, U.S. 1944\, 113 min.\, 35mm). \nJudy Garland stars as Esther Smith\, one of four daughters of a prominent St. Louis businessman around the time of the World's Fair in 1904. Her world is turned upside down when she falls in love with the boy next door and her father informs the family that they are moving to New York. A holiday classic and one of Minnelli's first musicals\, this film brought us some excellent songs\, including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Trolley Song." \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:The Unholy Three screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Unholy Three (Tod Browning\, U.S. 1925\, 79 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nHow cheery would the holidays be without watching cunning ventriloquist Lon Chaney\, strongman Victor Mclaglen\, and vindictive dwarf Harry Earles plot a dastardly crime to take place on Christmas Eve? The Unholy Three is a weird tale indeed\, darkly yet humanely directed by macabre master Tod Browning\, and has not only one of Chaney's best portrayals but also a moving performance from the gifted Australian actress Mae Busch\, now chiefly remembered for her appearances as a shrewish wife in Laurel and Hardy comedies. Browning exploits every strangeness he can find\, and the film was so successful on its original release it was remade just five years later as Chaney's first (and only) talkie. The original\, however\, is far more compelling and unsettling. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:L'impossible—pages arrachées (The Impossible - Pieces of Fury) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen L'impossible—pages arrachées (The Impossible – Pieces of Fury\, Sylvain George\, France 2009\, 90 min.\, Blu-ray\, French w/subtitles). "The first half hour of the film will be accompanied by a live performance by Rochester-based electronic musician Martin Freeman." \nTold in five chapters\, with titles borrowed from the likes of Fyodor Dostoevsky\, Arthur Rimbaud\, and Walter Benjamin\, Sylvain George's The Impossible is a tour de force of political filmmaking. The film begins in the port town of Calais\, where scores of African and Middle Eastern refugees make nightly bids to cross the English Channel into Britain. Through George's grainy\, often bleached-out or red-tinged Super 8 images\, Calais appears almost as an alien planet. In this desolate\, uninviting "non-place\," we see the harsh living conditions of the asylum seekers\, for whom hope is not an idea but a place (an "elsewhere"). George's work has gained a reputation in Europe as formally stunning and fiercely intellectual\, but is still seldom seen by audiences across the Atlantic. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:Charles Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol" in 1843 as an attempt to stir the British public to an awareness of the poverty and hardships around them. Its tale of a miserly old man who learns the importance of generosity and "Christmas spirit" was an immediate success and has been in continual print to this day. It was first adapted to the stage within months of publication and is one of the most-filmed stories in cinematic history. Dickens himself took to reading the tale to audiences and "Carol" was the work he chose for his farewell performance\, mere months before his death. \n[source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Dec-21]

SUMMARY:Gremlins screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Gremlins (Joe Dante\, U.S. 1984\, 106 min.) as part of the Mondo Movie Series. \nMinature green monsters tear through the small town of Kingston Falls. Hijinks ensue as a mild-mannered bank teller releases these hideous loonies after gaining a new pet and violating two of three simple rules: No water (violated)\, no food after midnight (violated)\, and no bright light. Hilarious mayhem and destruction in a town straight out of Norman Rockwell. So\, when your washing machine blows up or your TV goes on the fritz\, before you call the repair man\, turn on all the lights and look under all the beds. 'cause you never can tell\, there just might be a gremlin in your house. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Dec-21]

SUMMARY:My Fair Eliza theatrical performance (2015-Dec-26 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The classic story of Professor Henry Higgins and his attempt to turn "guttersnipe" Eliza Doolittle into a lady who could pass as "a duchess at an ambassador's garden party" was first performed in 1913 (as a German translation) in Vienna\, followed by its New York premiere in March of 1914 (again in German) and finally in English in London in April\, 1914. […] "My Fair Eliza" (taking its name from both the musical and Shaw's working title\, "Fair Eliza") returns to Shaw's original version\, editing the work for time and clarity. It serves as a perfect introduction to one of the great works of the theater for the uninitiated and (at around an hour runtime) a breezy refresher for fans of "Pygmalion" and "My Fair Lady" alike. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Dec-21]

DESCRIPTION:In Ken Ludwig's (Lend Me A Tenor\, Fox on the Fairway\, Shakespeare in Hollywood) latest comedy\, it's Christmas Eve\, 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette\, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes\, has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death\, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. Then it's up to Gillette himself\, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes\, to track down the killer before the next victim appears.
