DESCRIPTION:Starting at 11 a.m.\, Kathy Richardson will present The Pathology of Gun Violence: Building Safer Communities for Our Children at the Gandhi Institute. \nThe presentation is a look at how guns move from the gun dealers out into communities\, where over 100\,000 people are shot\, and 32\,000 killed every year. Participants will learn simple steps they can begin taking now\, in building safer communities for our children. \n [source: Gandhi Inistitute website\, 2015-May-11]

DESCRIPTION:Two actresses meet each other for the first rehearsal of an all-female production of the famed playwaiting for Godot\, but their different backgrounds may throw them and the show out of control — then there's the neurotic stage manager who would rather be anywhere else and the veteran star who gets called in to sort it all out… \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Lambert and Stamp screening
DESCRIPTION:At this afternoon's 3:30 p.m. screening of Lambert and Stamp (James D. Cooper\, U.S. 2014\, 117 min.)\, one of the producers—my guess is Douglas Graves—will be on hand to discuss the film. \nEarly 1960s London: the postwar generation who grew up playing in air raid shelters and bomb sites is detonating a youth rebellion that brings Hesiod's words back to life. At London's Shepperton Studios\, two young 2nd assistant directors compare notes on film\, music\, and frustrated ambitions\, forging an unlikely friendship and collaboration that leaves an indelible mark on pop music and culture of the '60s and beyond. Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp\, aspiring filmmakers\, set out to make a cinema vérité documentary about the mod world of rock and roll\, but get sidetracked instead into managing and developing the sonic powerhouse that came to be called The Who. Their gorgeously propulsive footage-the rock documentary that was never completed-lays a foundation for director James D. Cooper's kaleidoscopic study of an era and a rare friendship's creative bond. Present-day interviews with the surviving principals\, now grown older\, reflect thoughtfully on their relationships and life trajectories. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2015-May-13]

SUMMARY:50\,000\,000 Jacobeans Can't Be Wrong: Shakespeare's Greatest Hits—Volume 2 performance
DESCRIPTION:ShakeCo presents 50\,000\,000 Jacobeans Can't Be Wrong: Shakespeare's Greatest Hits—Volume 2 at the MuCCC starting at 4 p.m. \nThe canon of Shakespeare's plays runs to a grand total of thirty-eight works. (Or thirty-nine…or forty — I mean\, how do you feel about "Edward III"?) But in all those plays\, two rise to the top: "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet". Well\, we're not going to do those two\, because we did them last year. But this year\, we've got two more of Shakespeare's best and you can come see five brave souls portray every speaking character (yes every speaking character) in every scene (yes\, every scene) in those two plays. And all in about an hour… \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Ali: Fear Eats the Soul screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Angst essen Seele auf\, Rainer Werner Fassbinder\, West Germany 1974\, 94 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles) tonight at 8 p.m. \nOne night\, Emmi (Brigitte Mira)\, an aging cleaning woman\, wanders into an unfamiliar bar during a downpour. She ends up dancing with a young Moroccan guest worker named Ali (El Hedi ben Salem). Soon they are close friends\, then lovers\, then they decide to be married\, despite their near 20 year age difference. For Emmi's family and co-workers\, the marriage is a complete disgrace\, for Ali's friends\, its bewildering. The prejudices of race\, age\, and class the two confront in the face of their marriage only proves to strengthen their relationship. It's when they rejoin their respective social worlds that conflict and heartbreak arises. To say Ali: Fear Eats the Soul is a remake of Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows\, in which an older woman falls for her younger gardener to her children and her friends' disgust\, is to simplify the unique power of both films. While delicate in its treatment of tenderness and love\, Fassbinder places the story in the brutal world of the city\, where the characters cannot escape their confined surroundings\, and violence boils just under the surface. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Violet performance (2015-May-16 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:As a girl\, Violet was involved in a tragic accident leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved\, she's traveling across the deep south in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist that she hopes can make her beautiful. The scars lie deeper than the skin – but on the bus journey her fellow riders\, including a young African-American solider teach her about beauty\, love\, courage\, and what it means to be an outsider. With a score of show-stopping anthems ranging from American roots to folk to gospel\, Violet is a thought provoking musical that challenges you to look beyond the surface. \n [source: Facebook\, 2015-Apr-27]

Wellman\, U.S. 1930\, 70 min.\, 35mm). \n"Flying and spying have their innings in Young Eagles\, an audible film now at the Paramount. Charles Rogers\, the young screen player whose popularity is not to be denied\, figures as Lieutenant Robert Banks\, an American pilot in the World War who has a series of strange adventures\, including a temporary disappointment in his love affair. Banks has a thrilling time\, what with bringing down an enemy flier and then being shot down himself by the same German." — New York Times\, 1930 \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]

SUMMARY:Violet performance (2015-May-17 @ 2 p.m.)

SUMMARY:Shaun of the Dead screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 6:30 p.m.\, the Littlewill screen Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright\, U.K. / France / U.S.\, 2004\, 99 min.)—inexplicably as part of their Science on Screen Series followed by a discussion with virus experts Dr. Luis Martinez-Sobrido\, and Dr. David Topham. \nThere comes a day in every man's life when he has to get off the couch… and kill some zombies. When flesh-eating zombies are on the hunt for a bite to eat\, it's up to slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his best pal (Nick Frost) to save their friends and family from becoming the next entree. Satisfy your bloodthirsty appetite with the movie that masters of horror and film critics alike hailed as the funniest and scariest movie of 2004. Novelist Stephen King gushed\, "It's a 10 on the fun meter and destined to be a cult classic" and Newsweek called Shaun of the Dead "a bloody hoot!" It's a screamingly hilarious zomedy that will have you dying with laughter. \n [source: Little Theatre e-mail\, 2015-May-13]

SUMMARY:Wings screening
DESCRIPTION:Tonight at 8 p.m.\, the Dryden will screen Wings (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1927\, 144 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nWilliam A. Wellman's WWI aviation epic (his first major film) is notable on a number of fronts: it established the "wartime buddies/rivals for girl at home" type of story\, elevated both Richard Arlen and Buddy Rogers to major star status\, won the first Academy Award for Best Picture\, and set a still-impressive standard for aerial photography of flight combat—lent extra authenticity through Wellman's own experiences as a pilot in the French Army's Lafayette Flying Corps. Besides these important achievements\, it has the incomparable Clara Bow in one of her best roles and a brief\, career-establishing walk-on part for Gary Cooper. A passionate\, thrilling\, at times funny\, and ultimately quite moving experience\, Wings is a film that goes into the heavens yet deals poignantly with human emotions on earth as well. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-May-11]
