SUMMARY:Writing About Place: The Physical World
DESCRIPTION:In the Rundel Arts Room on the 1st floor of the Rundel Memorial Building is a class titled Writing About Place: The Physical World. \nCome write about the dynamics and interconnections that exist in the places you have lived. Consider the complex responses to the concept of "home." Think of the elements of your environment that you might take for granted. Place could become a character\, a primary subject\, or an emotional landscape well beyond a dot on the map. Open to writers of all levels. Instructor\, Gail Hosking is the author of the memoir Snake's Daughter: the Roads in and out of War and the poetry chapbook The Tug. Her work has been anthologized several times. She holds an MFA from Bennington College and taught for many years at RIT. Her poems and essays have been published in such places as Lilith Magazine\, Nimrod\, The Chattahoochee Review\, Tar River Poetry and The Fourth Genre. Two recent essays were considered "most notable" in Best American Essays 2014 and 2015. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-May-29]

SUMMARY:Homeland: Iraq Year Zero screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Homeland: Iraq Year Zero (Abbas Fahdel\, Iraq/France 2015\, 334 min.\, DCP\, Arabic w/subtitles). \nIn February 2002—about a year before the U.S. invasion—Iraqi filmmaker Abbas Fahdel traveled home from France to capture everyday life as his country prepared for war. He concentrated on family and friends\, including his 12-year-old nephew\, Haider\, as they went about their daily lives\, which had come to include planning for shortages of food\, water\, and power. No strangers to war\, the Iraqis thought they understood what was coming and could even manage to be grimly humorous about what they felt would likely be a major and lengthy inconvenience. And then\, the war began. When Fahdel resumed filming in 2003\, two weeks after the invasion\, daily activities had come to a near standstill\, the city had become overrun with foreign soldiers\, and many areas of Baghdad had been closed off to ordinary citizens. Iraqis endure\, seemingly as unwitting as Americans themselves about what further tragedy awaits. Fahdel's epic yet intimate film paints a compelling portrait of people struggling to survive while their civilization\, dating back to ancient times\, is destroyed around them. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-May-29]

SUMMARY:Pretty Woman screening (2017-Jun-5 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pretty Woman (Garry Marshall\, U.S. 1990\, 119 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nOne of the quintessential romantic movies of the 1990s\, Pretty Woman is a compulsively watchable and immensely entertaining riff on the ancient Cinderella myth of Prince Charming on a white horse. In a breakthrough role\, Julia Roberts shines as a kindhearted hooker rescued by a wealthy businessman in the suave shape of Richard Gere. This colorful catalogue of irresistible clichés has charmed critics and international audiences alike\, while acquiring the status of a proper camp classic in certain circles. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-May-8]

SUMMARY:David Murray and El'Zabar Duo musical performance
DESCRIPTION:For over 15 years\, Bop Shop Records has had a happy and productive relationship with Aacm master percussionist Kahil El'Zabar. Going back to 2000 when he first brought his main band\, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble\, to the atrium at Village Gate\, he has graced us with several versions of his various ensembles. Earlier in 2016\, we presented an edition of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble featuring trombonist Craig Harris and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Blueitt. Back in 2001\, we presented the duo of El'Zabar and violinist Billy Bang. But perhaps our most well-attended concert was a duet set with saxophonist David Murray in 2000. And we are proud that it resulted in the album We Is: Live At The Bop Shop\, released on Delmark Records to great acclaim. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2017-May-29]

SUMMARY:Fellini Satyricon screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Fellini Satyricon (Federico Fellini\, Italy 1969\, 129 min.\, 35mm; Italian w/subtitles) as part of the Period Dramas series. \nOf all Fellini's films\, this is perhaps his most quintessentially Fellini-esque\, consistently serving up grotesque carnival excess and spectacle. Loosely adapted from Petronius's lurid Ancient Rome farrago\, Fellini Satyricon freely follows the alternatingly bloody and randy adventures of the young poet Encolpius (Martin Potter)\, whose desperate infatuation with an androgynous piece of jailbait (Max Born) gets him in all kinds of trouble. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-May-29]
