SUMMARY:2001: A Space Odyssey screening (2017-Jan-22 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick\, Uk/Usa 1968\, 149 min.\, 35mm) as part of the First Contact\, and Museum Treasures. series. \nDave Bowman: "Open the pod bay doors\, Hal." Hal: "I'm sorry\, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that." The George Eastman Museum will present its recently acquired\, brand-new 35mm print of the roadshow version of 2001: A Space Odyssey\, complete with the music meant to be heard before the film's beginning\, during the intermission\, and at the end. In writer and director Kubrick's visionary sci-fi masterwork\, the themes of artificial intelligence and of human exploration of our solar system\, now part of our everyday experience\, are treated with prophetic insight through a solemn\, spellbinding immersion in the silence of the cosmos: widescreen\, the Blue Danube waltz\, and pristine imagery from the film's preservation negative are in full display for the kind of cinematic event that fully expresses the motion picture as an art form. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-16]

SUMMARY:At the River I Stand screening
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Squirrel will screen At the River I Stand (David Appleby \, Allison Graham \, Steven John Ross \, U.S. 1993\, 56 min.) \nThe 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike And The Assassination Of Dr. Martin Luther King Memphis\, Spring 1968 marked the dramatic climax of the Civil Rights movement. At the River I Stand skillfully reconstructs the two eventful months that transformed a strike by Memphis sanitation workers into a national conflagration\, and disentangles the complex historical forces that came together with the inevitability of tragedy at the death of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. This 58-minute documentary brings into sharp relief issues that have only become more urgent in the intervening years: the connection between economic and civil rights\, debates over strategies for change\, the demand for full inclusion of African Americans in American life and the fight for dignity for public employees and all working people. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2017-Jan-16]

SUMMARY:Films\, Facts and Fallacies About Mental Health: Rocks In My Pockets screening
DESCRIPTION:In the Rehab Center Auditorium at the Rochester Psychiatric Center is a screening of the peculiarly charming essay film\, Rocks In My Pockets (Signe Baumane\, U.S. / Latvia 2014\, 88 min.) followed by a brief discussion led by Dr. Laurence Guttmacher. \n"Rocks In Your [sic] Pockets" is a story of mystery and redemption. The film is based on true events involving five women of Signe Baumane's family\, including herself\, and their battles with depression and suicide. It raises questions of how much family genetics determine who we are and if it is possible to out-smart one's own DNA. The film is packed with visual metaphors\, surreal images and a twisted sense of humor. It is an animated tale full of art\, women\, strange daring stories\, Latvian accents\, history\, nature\, adventure and more. \n [source: Mental Health Association e-mail\, 2017-Jan-9]

SUMMARY:Gabe screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Gabe (Luke Terrell\, U.S. 2017\, 70 min.) as part of the Dialogue on Disability special programming\, followed by a panel discussion and videoconference with director Luke Terrell. \nNo parent should have to bury their child\, but that was the reality that Dick and Josephine Weil faced when their adopted son Gabe was diagnosed with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. By the age of ten\, Gabe was wheelchair bound. By his mid teens\, he required a full time caretaker. Despite his grim diagnosis\, Gabe made it a life goal to get a college degree\, knowing that such an accomplishment was more than most could expect of him. In December of 2013\, Gabe graduated from Washington University in St. Louis\, fulfilling that dream. Nearly simultaneously\, doctors informed him that he had been misdiagnosed all along\, and as such\, that he might live into his 50s. Although this news was overwhelmingly positive\, it presented a surprising obstacle. Gabe did not have any long-term goals. He was forced to rethink his life from scratch. This radical shift in consciousness propelled him to set new goals\, continue overcoming obstacles\, and manifest more dreams. Gabe is a testament to human perseverance\, and a reminder that despite our differences\, we are all connected through our shared humanity. \n [source: WXXI website\, 2017-Jan-23]

SUMMARY:Climate Action at the Local\, State\, and Federal Levels
DESCRIPTION:There are currently actions that can be taken at the local and State level to fight climate change\, and there is a need to coalesce people to lobby for carbon fee and dividend at the federal level. Representatives of the Rochester People's Climate Coalition will be presenting information on Community Choice Aggregation\, the New York State Climate and Community Protection Act\, and the Citizen's Climate Lobby proposal for carbon fee and dividend. There will be a presentation and discussion on each of these topics. Efforts are already under way to create a Community Choice Aggregation program in the Rochester metropolitan area. This is very exciting because it would result in a lower fixed-rate for electricity for residents and small business in participating municipalities\, and a mechanism to grow our local renewable energy supply. \n [source: Color Brighton Green website\, 2017-Jan-9]

SUMMARY:The Catered Affair screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Catered Affair (Richard Brooks\, U.S. 1956\, 93 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Ernest Borgnine series. \nErnest Borgnine stars with Bette Davis as working-class parents in this timely and extremely relevant field guide for anyone contemplating marriage with no budget. Practical and level-headed Jane announces at breakfast that she and Ralph are getting married next week in a simple ceremony with only family in attendance\, and for economy\, no reception. By dinner time\, the opinions of various family members from both sides of the aisle have blasted the nuptials into the realm of extravaganza. Borgnine is especially poignant as the father of the bride—sensible\, frugal\, and loving—as he contemplates his life's savings burning on the altar of artificial social pressure. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-16]
