SUMMARY:Conscience theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Good\, a middle class American farm mother of ten\, volunteered to testify on behalf of her son at his 1973 trial. Her son\, Bob Good\, was charged with raiding a Camden\, New Jersey draft board as a member of the Camden 28. Bob\, a longtime Rochester resident\, and Caroline Yeager performing as his mother\, now recreate this historical testimony which speaks to our times. \n [source: e-mail\, 2015-Sep-17]

SUMMARY:Notorious screening (2015-Sep-21 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Notorious (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1946\, 101 min.\, 35mm). \nIn one of Hitchcock's crowning achievements\, the master of suspense utilizes all of his technical and storytelling acumen in the realization of this gripping thriller. A young woman (Ingrid Bergman) is recruited by the government to spy on a group of Nazis\, while her contact (Cary Grant) must put duty before love to save her life. From a script by Ben Hecht\, Notorious takes an almost masochistic delight in the gray moral areas in which it places its characters\, and stands as one of the director's most mature\, engaging works. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Cyrano de Bergerac screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cyrano de Bergerac (Augusto Genina\, Italy 1922\, 104 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nOne of James Card's particular treasures that he brought to George Eastman House—and in fact was the very last film he saw in the Dryden Theatre—was this exquisitely conceived silent version of Edmond Rostand's play. Director Augusto Genina inventively visualizes Rostand's characters and poetry\, and even literally does so in the famous verbal duel scene between the gallant title character and the dullard who mocks his appearance\, running text through the images. Not the least of the film's attractions is its beautiful coloring. It is in full color\, but not Technicolor; it has its hues "painted" on the film itself by a stenciling process\, which give it a luster akin to vivid watercolor. This will be an optically poetic experience in many ways—one not to be missed. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Qing shao nian nuo zha (Rebels of the Neon God) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Qing shao nian nuo zha (Rebels of the Neon God\, Tsai Ming-liang\, Taiwan 1992/2014\, 106 min.\, DCP\, Mandarin w/subtitles). \nTsai Ming-liang emerged on the world cinema scene in 1992 with his groundbreaking first feature\, Rebels of the Neon God. His debut already includes a handful of elements familiar to fans of subsequent work: a deceptively spare style often branded "minimalist"; actor Lee Kang-sheng as the silent and sullen Hsiao-kang; copious amounts of water\, whether pouring from the sky or bubbling up from a clogged drain; and enough urban anomie to ensure that even the subtle humor in evidence is tinged with pathos. The loosely structured plot involves Hsiao-kang\, a despondent cram school student\, who becomes obsessed with young petty thief Ah-tze\, after Ah-tze smashes the rearview mirror of a taxi driven by Hsiao-kang's father. Rebels of the Neon God is a remarkably impressive first film that hints at the promise of its director: a talent confirmed by Tsai's equally stunning second feature\, Vive L'amour (Golden Lion\, Venice)\, and continuing to his most recent film\, Stray Dogs\, which ranked high on many "best of" lists last year. Though showing such diverse influences as the French New Wave\, Wong Kar-wai's early films—and\, yes\, Rebel Without a Cause—Tsai's film is most remarkable for introducing his startlingly unique vision to world cinema. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:The Brood screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Brood (David Cronenberg\, Canada 1979\, 92 min.\, 35mm). \nSomething's gone terribly wrong at the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics\, where\, through intense psychological role playing Dr. Hal Raglan (Oliver Reed) has been encouraging troubled clients to manifest their repressed emotions and desires as fleshy\, distinctly Cronenbergian excrescences that soon appear on their skin. The case of prized-patient Nola (Samantha Eggar)\, a troubled woman with monstrous mommy issues\, however\, has become particularly worrying: It appears Nola's deep-seated rage has begun taking on unexpected—and homicidal—forms. Cronenberg\, who had recently undergone a bruising divorce and custody battle\, claimed that his shocking third feature was a more realistic Kramer vs. Kramer\, a statement that didn't help deflect criticism that his own film was similarly misogynistic. Other critics have taken a different stance\, arguing that the film should be read as a cunning condemnation of the often-sexist psychotherapy narratives popular at the time of the film's release—an anti—ordinary People of sorts. Either way\, this is one of Cronenberg's most frightening and controversial works. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:Marx In Soho\, a play on history theatrical performance (2015-Sep-24 @ 8:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:In "Marx In Soho\, a play on history"\, historian Howard Zinn creates a whimsical one-man play in which Karl Marx returns from the grave in order to clear his name. However\, due to a bureaucratic mixup\, Marx winds up — not in his old stomping grounds of London — but in modern-day New York City's SoHo district. Featuring veteran actor\, Jack Simel\, who has worked with most of Rochester's theatre groups and is an Artist in Residence at the MuCCC. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Sep-21]
