SUMMARY:Somewhere Under Wonderland performance (2015-Jul-24 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC is hosting a performance of Somewhere Under Wonderland by Mario Savastano with music and lyrics by Counting Crows. \nSomewhere Under Wonderland explores friendship\, love\, sacrifice and the search for identity through the eyes of young adults living in an apartment complex outside of Los Angeles\, California. When Andy drifts into town—determined to leave his past behind—he becomes part of a circle of friends struggling with abuse\, addiction\, and the compromises necessary to achieve their dreams. As desperation and fear threaten to drive them apart\, they make difficult choices and set plans into motion\, culminating in events that will change their lives forever. SUMMARY:Costa da morte (Coast of Death) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Costa da morte (Coast of Death\, Lois Patiño\, Spain 2013\, 81 min.\, DCP\, Gallegan w/subtitles) with a special presentation by Paolo Cherchi Usai. \nThose who regard cinema as a pleasure for the eyes will be richly rewarded by this pictorially stunning portrait of what the ancient Romans called "the end of the world" (hence the name "Cap Finisterre" on modern maps). The nickname in the title comes from the many shipwrecks that occurred among the rocks\, mist\, and storms of this beautiful stretch of wilderness in northwestern Spain. There is very little dialogue in the film\, as its real protagonist is the rugged\, majestic landscape of the coastline and its troubled relationship with loggers\, sailors\, farmers\, and shellfish hunters. Lyrical and impassioned at the same time\, Patiño's feature debut celebrates the majesty of planet Earth while being utterly explicit on how humans are exploiting its resources. Explicit doesn't mean judgmental\, though\, and there is no environmentalist agenda here; instead\, we are presented with an exquisite portrait of nature where human activity\, however destructive\, is part of nature itself. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-20]

SUMMARY:The Wicker Man—Final Cut screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Wicker Man—Final Cut (Robin Hardy\, U.K. 1973\, 92 min.\, DCP). \nAfter receiving an anonymous letter about a missing 12-year-old girl\, a devout Christian cop travels by seaplane to a remote Scottish island to investigate. But the islanders welcome neither his badge nor religious devotion\, for laird of the isle (Christopher Lee) and his devoted followers worship only the pagan gods of old—and those gods demand a sacrifice. The cop fears for the missing girl's life and follows every possible lead to find her—despite the islanders' interference—before she becomes a human sacrificial lamb. "The Wicker Man has great\, entertaining dialogue but it's not like other highly quotable cult movies. It's about something alien and yet close by. And it changed music\, art and film when fans rediscovered it en masse in the 1990s. You need to see it if you haven't already\, and if you have—watch it again. It never gets tired." — William Fowler\, Sight and Sound (2014) \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-20]

SUMMARY:Bringing Up Baby screening (2015-Jul-27 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen one of my personal favorites\, Bringing Up Baby (Howard Hawks\, U.S. 1938\, 102 min.\, 35mm). \nIn the mother of all screwball comedies\, Cary Grant stars as a stuffy paleontologist who knows more about dinosaurs than he does about the modern woman. This makes him easy prey for wacky heiress Katharine Hepburn who gets her man involved in a series of increasingly funny disasters. Director Hawks\, a master of all genres\, provided a template for comedy directors for years to come\, and it still holds up beautifully. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-15]

SUMMARY:The Mask of Fu Manchu screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Mask of Fu Manchu (Charles Brabin\, U.S. 1932\, 67 min.\, 35mm). \nBoris Karloff\, fresh from Frankenstein\, The Mummy\, and The Old Dark House\, stars as the diabolical Chinese megalomaniac Dr. Fu Manchu\, who tries to take over the world via archeology and torture. Myrna Loy gives a vibrant performance as Fu's young daughter\, helping him in his quest to acquire the sword and mask of Genghis Khan. Using somewhat elaborate negotiation methods (hungry crocodiles\, unnecessary surgery\, dagger-laden sliding walls) our villain tries to persuade an archaeological team to "donate" the magical relics which will endow him with the power to rule. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-20]

SUMMARY:Grey Gardens screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Grey Gardens (Albert Maysles\, David Maysles\, Ellen Hovde\, and Muffie Meyer\, U.S. 1975\, 100 min.\, 35mm). \nIn a filthy\, rotting East Hampton mansion overrun with cats and raccoons\, Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie lead a reclusive and eccentric lifestyle—to put it mildly. The two Edies\, cousins to Jacqueline Onassis\, talk about their former lives in high society\, offer bizarre fashion tips\, and try to maintain the line between past and present. In this strange and often surreal piece of direct cinema\, an unforgettable\, sometimes disturbing\, but ultimately affectionate relationship is explored. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jul-20]
