SUMMARY:Never Weaken\, Why Worry? screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Never Weaken (Fred C. Newmeyer\, U.S. 1921\, 19 min.\, 35mm)\, and Why Worry? (Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor\, U.S. 1923\, 63 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nCelebrating the 125th birthday of the silent era's "Third Genius\," Harold Lloyd\, the Dryden presents these two films that catch the comedian at his best. In the first\, Lloyd attempts to help his sweetheart's employment status\, but is heartbroken when he believes that she may love another\, leading to a dangerous decision. Released the same year as Safety Last!\, Why Worry? features Lloyd as Harold van Pelham\, a wealthy hypochondriac looking for rest and relaxation on the fictional island of Paradiso. Instead\, he walks into a revolutionary uprising and winds up in jail next to the seven-foot-tall Colosso\, a "wild" man with a toothache. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Čertův mlýn (The Devil's Mill)\, Císařův Slavíc (The Emperor's Nightingale) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden Čertův mlýn (The Devil's Mill\, Jiří Trnka\, Czechoslovakia 1949\, 20 min.\, 35mm)\, and Císařův Slavíc (The Emperor's Nightingale\, Jiří Trnka\, Czechoslovakia 1948\, 72 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Animation of Jiri Trnka series. \nTrnka's first feature-length animation\, The Emperor's Nightingale is his adaptation of a classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale about a Chinese emperor enchanted by the song of a mechanical songbird. It is an enchanting animated jewel box awash in hallucinatory\, storybook imagery. Preceded by The Devil's Mill\, in which a barrel organ grinder meets the devil on a mysterious moonlit night. This haunted house fable showcases Trnka's atmospheric use of sound to conjure a macabre mood. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Matt Wood and The Natural Disasters musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Here's what Matt has to say…"I am a Knoxville\, Tennessee based songwriter who spends a hell of a lot of time driving all over bringing my songs to anyone who cares to listen. Some folks call what I do Outlaw Country or Americana\, but I have a hard time putting a label on things like that. A lot of my songs are very much based in classic Country music while others are grounded in straight forward and greasy rock 'n' roll. I write what is ready to come out and try to be as hones as I can about it. Give 'em a listen and call 'em what you want then get your ass out to a show!" \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Ava screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ava (Sadaf Foroughi\, Canada/Iran 2017\, 102 min.\, DCP\, Persian w/subtitles). \nBased on the director's own adolescent experiences\, Sadaf Foroughi's Ava is a gripping debut about coming of age in a strict society. Living with her well-to-do parents in Tehran\, Ava is bright and focused\, with common teenage concerns—friendships\, music\, social status\, academic performance. When her mistrustful and overprotective mother questions her relationship with a boy\, Ava is overwhelmed by a newfound rage. The model student begins to rebel against the strictures imposed by her parents\, her school\, and society. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-3]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lola Flash—AIDS FLASHback
DESCRIPTION:VSW will host an Opening Reception for Lola Flash's AIDS FLASHback\, on display through October 27. \nLola Flash has been photographing for over thirty years with numerous exhibitions to date. She earned a BA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a MA from the London College of Printing. AIDS FLASHback focuses on Flash's previous work as an activist. About the work she notes\, "These selections are a reflection of the late 80s and early 90s\, a time when the AIDS crisis was at its height in New York City. I was an activist and a member of ACT UP\, as well as ART+ (an affinity group focusing on issues around brown people affected by AIDS). Some of the images are from ACT UP demonstrations in New York and Washington\, DC. Others are photographs which speak to the sadness and loss of too many friends during that period\, as well as the anger towards many of the institutions that silently watched us die." \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2018-Sep-3]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: A Material Thing by John Shea
DESCRIPTION:The Flower City Arts Center will host an Opening Reception in the Firehouse Gallery for A Material Thing by John Shea\, on display through September 29. \nA Material Thing is an attempt to construct a logic in which to better see objects\, both as discrete and in relationship\, and to understand from that relationship the objects themselves. The work takes a series of systems and creates abstracted representations that connect to the way we see and think about objects\, the way objects relate to other objects\, while also questioning the relationship between part and whole. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2018-Sep-3]
