SUMMARY:La Souriante Madame Beudet\, Cœur fidèle screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La Souriante Madame Beudet (Germaine Dulac\, France 1923\, 23 min.\, 16mm)\, and CÅ"ur fidèle (Jean Epstein\, France 1923\, 87 min.\, 16mm) with live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip C. Carli. \nAlthough cinema was born in France in the 1890s\, the French film industry was decimated after World War I\, leading to decreased production as the country rebuilt and capital was restored. It began its resurgence in the 1920s thanks\, in part\, to the impressionist movement and filmmakers such as Dulac and Epstein. Considered by many to be one of the first truly feminist films\, La Souriante Madame Beudet is the story of a man\, his wife who has grown tired of his practical jokes\, and an unloaded gun. CÅ"ur fidèle tells the tale of a tragic love triangle played against the port city of Marseille. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Nov-11]

SUMMARY:Form and Content: Experimental Films by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie
DESCRIPTION:Austrialian filmmakers Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie are internationally renowned for their inventive 16mm filmmaking techniques\, both in the camera and in the darkroom. Their films combine creativity\, chemistry\, invention and experimentation to culminate in a visceral synchronicity of form and content. Tuohy and Barrie will present a program of their recent experiments\, including films made using their own "chromaflex" process\, by which color print stock is selectively developed as color positive\, color negative and black and white. \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2019-Nov-11]

SUMMARY:The Wrecking Crew screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Wrecking Crew (Phil Karlson\, U.S. 1968\, 105 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Once Upon a Time … at the Dryden series. \nThe final feature of the Matt Helm series\, this comedic spy parody stars Dean Martin\, Nancy Kwan\, and Sharon Tate. (Released only six months prior to the gruesome Manson murders\, the film was still playing in U.S. theaters at the time of Tate's death.) This lighthearted spoof of the popular James Bond franchise follows Matt Helm (Martin) as the apathetic spy who tries to stop a criminal mastermind from stealing enough money to send the world into a financial panic. Though Martin is entertaining as always\, it is Tate's character Freya Carlson who truly steals the spotlight with her hilarious gags and dynamic action scenes. Later\, the Austin Powers series would base one of its characters on Tate's portrayal of the blundering yet good-hearted spy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Nov-11]
