SUMMARY:Half the Picture screening\, discussion with Amy Adrion
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Half the Picture (Amy Adrion\, U.S. 2018\, 94 min.) followed by a discussion with director Amy Adrion as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nHalf The Picture celebrates the groundbreaking work of female film directors and investigates the systemic discrimination that has for decades denied far too many talented women opportunities in Hollywood. The documentary consists of interviews with high profile women directors including Ava Duvernay\, Jill Soloway\, Lena Dunham\, Catherine Hardwicke and Miranda July\, and many others\, discussing their early careers\, how they transitioned to studio films or television\, how they balance having a demanding directing career with family\, and challenges and joys along the way. The filmmakers also interviews experts about gender inequality in Hollywood including the Aclu's Melissa Goodman\, Sundance Institute's Caroline Libresco\, Vanity Fair's Rebecca Keegan\, Usc's Dr. Stacy Smith and San Diego State University's Dr. Martha Lauzen\, who establish the magnitude of this employment discrimination issue as woman are shut out across the board\, of an industry that systemically denies their expression and point of view. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Jul-5]

SUMMARY:Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland (Bye Bye Germany) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland (Bye Bye Germany\, Sam Garbarski\, Belgium/Germany/Luxembourg 2017\, 101 min.\, English\, German – w/ subtitles) as part of the RJFF series. \nGerman star Moritz Bleibtreu is a defiant Holocaust survivor looking to strike it rich in postwar Frankfurt in Bye Bye Germany\, a brisk\, polished drama tempered with bittersweet humor. Though haunted by memories of his family\, hustler David Bermann (Bleibtreu) is determined to eke out a living in his battle-scarred homeland. With a jaunty klezmerstyle score and Yiddish-inflected dialogue\, this fresh historical perspective is an utterly engaging salute to European Jews who chose to tough-out painful memories and reclaim their lives. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Jul-2]

SUMMARY:Good Thoughts\, Good Words\, Good Deeds: The Conductor Zubin Mehta screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Good Thoughts\, Good Words\, Good Deeds: The Conductor Zubin Mehta (Bettina Ehrhardt\, Germany 2016\, 89 min.\, English\, German\, Hebrew\, Italian – w/ subtitles) as part of the Rochester Jewish Film Festival (RJFF). \nBorn in India\, Zubin Mehta has conducted orchestras the world over\, but is most identified with the Israel Philharmonic\, where he serves as Music Director for Life and the nation's face of cultural excellence. Navigating among nations\, his efforts to uncouple politics from the canon of Western classical music have not been without controversy. SUMMARY:Muse: Drones World Tour screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Muse: Drones World Tour (Netherlands 2018\, 90 min.) as part of the Little Summer of Music series. \nMuse\, the world renowned multi-platinum selling and multi-award winning band\, embarked on their ambitious Drones World Tour in 2015-16\, playing over 130 dates across the globe. Known for pushing boundaries in terms of their stage production the tour saw the band perform "in the round" from the middle of the arena\, with the stage design and configuration giving fans a full 360 degree audio/visual sensory experience. Central to the tour's visuals were the Drones\, which flew autonomously above the stage and across the audience\, alongside giant projections which interacted with the band members on stage. This spectacle\, featuring Leds and lasers perfectly complimented the band's celebrated repertoire. Key songs performed on the tour included "Psycho"\, "Madness"\, "Uprising"\, "Plug in Baby"\, "Supermassive Black Hole" and Knights of Cydonia." Filmed and recorded over multiple shows the concert movie includes never before seen special effects along with an exclusive insight from the band in the introduction. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2018-Jul-5]

SUMMARY:Wreckless Eric musical performance
DESCRIPTION:He won't recreate 1978 for you\, he'll blow your mind instead. New album Construction Time and Demolition out on April 6th …we all thought he'd just play a few songs from his new album\, "America"\, a few classics from his Stiff Records years\, and we'd go home after hearing "Whole Wide World". But this was not a night of an old rocker going through the motions. It was an evening of pure rock and roll; an evening of performance art with a garage-rock flavor. It was a combination of Neil Young's "Ragged Glory" era\, Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"\, Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music"\, and any album in the Sonic Youth catalog. Songs began with layers and layers of different frequencies of noise and ended with these sounds blending into the next tune… \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Jul-9]

SUMMARY:Itzhak screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Itzhak (Alison Chernick\, US 2017\, 83 min.) as part of the Rochester Jewish Film Festival. \nFrom Schubert to Strauss\, Bach to Brahms\, Mozart to Billy Joel\, Itzhak Perlman's violin playing transcends mere performance to evoke the celebrations and struggles of real life. Alison Chernick's enchanting documentary looks beyond the sublime musician to see the polio survivor whose parents emigrated from Poland to Israel\, and the young man who struggled to be taken seriously. Itzhak himself is funny\, irreverent and self-deprecating\, and here his life story unspools in conversations with masterful musicians\, family and friends\, and most endearingly his devoted wife of 50 years. As charming and entrancing as the famous violinist himself\, Itzhak is a portrait of musical virtuosity seamlessly enclosed in warmth\, humor and\, above all\, love. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Jul-9]

SUMMARY:Lonberg-Holm\, Zarzutzki\, TJ Borden\, Martin Freeman musical performances
DESCRIPTION:Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello + electronics) and Aaron Zarzutzki (homemade instruments + electronics) have long associations with the Chicago (and beyond) free-improv\, rock and abstract music communities. Fred has studied and worked with Pauline Oliveros\, Anthony Braxton\, Ken Vandermark\, Jim O'Rourke\, The Boxhead Ensemble and Wilco as well as groups under his own direction like the Lightbox Orchestra. Aaron is a unique improvisor working with modular synthesizers\, turntables\, homemade electronics and acoustic instruments along with bizarre homemade amplifiers built out of drums\, clipboards and other non-traditional objects. He's one of those rare improvisers like Adam Bohman\, Ben Bennett and ID M Thefftable that can pull music out of any pile of garbage. \n [source: WNY Shows website\, 2018-Jul-9]

SUMMARY:Rochester Subway Vintage Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:Remains of the Rochester Subway are quickly disappearing! Join us for a special bus tour on July 14 that will trace the route of the Rochester Subway and visit key historic sites along the way\, including the new RTS Downtown Transit Center. The Rochester Subway served our city from 1927 through 1956\, connecting the suburbs of Brighton with downtown and Greece. After the end of Subway service on June 30\, 1956\, Rochester Transit Corp. donated Car 60 to our museum. 2018 marks the 62nd anniversary of the donation\, and also the 102nd birthday for his historic trolley car. We will be riding in style thanks to Regional Transit Service's restored 1957 GMC transit bus! The guided tour will depart from and return to Pittsford Plaza. We will visit the site of Rowlands Loop\, Court Street station\, the filled in Subway at Lexington Avenue\, and the site of the carbarn at General Motors. Additional stops may also be possible. \n [source: Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum website\, 2018-Jul-9]
