SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Phantom of the Opera (Rupert Julian\, U.S. 1925\, 90 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nOne of cinema's early horror classics\, this expressionistic silent film tells of the deformed outsider who dwells in the murky cellars beneath the Paris Opera House\, haunting the theater's patrons. Lon Chaney's portrayal of the phantom is riveting\, and the spectacle of his final unmasking remains one of the most frightening moments in movie history. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-23]

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Night of the Living Dead (George A. Romero\, U.S. 1968\, 96 min.\, 35mm) as part of the RIP Romero series. \nOur homage to George A. Romero begins at the beginning\, with his debut feature Night of the Living Dead\, the film that first unleashed flesh-eating zombies on the mainstream. Steeped in pop-culture iconography\, Romero's low-budget masterpiece and staple of drive-in culture continues to shock audiences with its no-holds-barred approach to an age-old legend. Working on a shoestring budget\, Romero and his crew created what was once deemed the most profitable horror film made outside studio walls. Claustrophobic\, menacing\, brashly political\, and altogether terrifying\, Night of the Living Dead has exerted powerful influence on the horror genre and on independent cinema in general. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-23]

SUMMARY:Building The Erie Canal: The Deep Cut lecture
DESCRIPTION:As the Erie Canal neared completion\, the final push was to make the Deep Cut through the Niagara Escarpment. Michael McCarthy\, President of the Irish American Cultural Institute\, Rochester Chapter\, and local author\, will examine the difficulties the engineers faced and how the Irish laborers contributed to making the nearly impossible task a reality. July 4\, 2017 marked the Bicentennial Celebration of the Erie Canal. \n [source: Monroe County Library calendar\, 2017-Oct-30]

SUMMARY:Celluloid Man screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Celluloid Man (Shivendra Singh Dungarpur\, India 2012\, 150 min.\, 35mm\, Hindi\, Bengali\, Kannada\, Malayalam\, Japanese\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Stories of Indian Cinema series. \n"Few are aware that 1\,700 silent films were made in India\, of which only nine survive\, thanks to the efforts of Mr. Nair. He traveled to remote parts of India to collect and save cans of rare films. He was truly democratic as an archivist trying to save any film that he could get his hands on\, be it world cinema\, Hindi popular films\, or regional Indian cinema. He even took world cinema to the villages of India. He has influenced generations of Indian film students especially the Indian New Wave filmmakers. As Mr. Nair speaks\, we see the history of Indian cinema unfold. What emerges is a portrait of a man so in love with cinema that even his family had to take a backseat to his obsession. Mr. Nair is not just the founder of the National Film Archive\, but a living\, breathing museum of cinema. The fact that India has a cinematic heritage at all is the singlehanded achievement of this man. There will be no one like him again." — Shivendra Singh Dungarpur \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-30]

SUMMARY:No God\, No Master screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen No God\, No Master (Terry Green\, U.S. 2013\, 94 min.\, DCP) as part of the Labor Film Series. \nWhen a series of package bombs show up on the doorsteps of prominent politicians and businessmen in the summer of 1919\, U.S. Bureau of Investigation Agent William Flynn (David Strathairn) is assigned the task of finding those responsible. He becomes immersed in an investigation that uncovers an anarchist plot to destroy democracy. Inspired by such real events as the Palmer Raids\, the deportation of Emma Goldman and other anarchists\, and the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti\, this thriller has timely parallels to today's response to terrorism\, the persecution of undocumented immigrants\, and attacks on labor unions. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-30]
