SUMMARY:Sunset Boulevard screening (2019-Mar-25 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder\, U.S. 1950\, 110 min.\, 35mm). \nGloria Swanson shines as Norma Desmond in this true-to-life story of a fading silent-film star and the struggling Hollywood studio system. Norma lives in seclusion in her Sunset Boulevard mansion\, surrounded by portraits of her younger self. Her former director and ex-husband\, Max von Mayerling (Erich von Stroheim)\, serves as her devoted butler and projectionist\, screening her old films. (In one reality-blurring scene\, Max projects Queen Kelly\, a real film from 1928 starring Swanson and directed by von Stroheim.) Norma invites a young\, struggling writer named Joe Gillis (William Holden) to live in her mansion with the pretension of being her script editor\, although he also becomes her kept lover with a foreshadowed violent demise. Cameos by silent-film stars and directors abound\, including Buster Keaton and Cecil B. DeMille\, to whom Norma directs her final line: "All right\, Mr. DeMille\, I'm ready for my closeup." \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-18]

SUMMARY:Merchants of Doubt screening (2019-Mar-25 @ 6 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Squirrel will screen Merchants of Doubt (Robert Kenner\, U.S. 2014\, 96 min.) \nInspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway\, Merchants Of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically comedic\, yet illuminating ride into the heart of conjuring American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic\, silver- tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities — yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2019-Mar-18]

SUMMARY:Hornets' Nest theatrical reading: Lines in the Dust by Nikkole Salter\, Jasmine B. Gunter
DESCRIPTION:When Denitra loses the charter school lottery for her daughter\, she must find another way to escape from their underperforming neighborhood school. The answer seems like a risk well worth taking\, but may end up requiring a bigger sacrifice than she ever could have imagined. Over a half-century after Brown Versus The Board of Education\, how much closer have we come to providing equal educational opportunities for all students? What rights and responsibilities does a school district have to enforce boundaries and regulate enrollment? How far can — or should — a parent go to secure the best for their child? \n [source: Geva Theatre Center website\, 2019-Mar-18]

SUMMARY:Can We Wait 75 Years to Cut the Prison Population in Half? by Nazgol Ghandnoosh
DESCRIPTION:"Ending the era of mass incarceration" is an emerging consensus issue but what would it take to truly end mass incarceration? Looking at decarcerating trends in New York\, New Jersey\, and California the Sentencing Project's Nazgol Ghandnoosh argues for a more robust approach than the ones presently on offer. Releasing "non-violent drug offenders" is a critical step\, but if we are serious about ending mass incarceration\, we need to meaningfully reform sentences for people convicted of violent crimes. \nAt the Sentencing Project\, Ghandnoosh has written about the declining prospects for parole on life sentences\, racial perceptions of crime\, and about best practices for eliminating racial inequality in the criminal justice system. She is finalizing a report featuring 15 reforms scaling back excessive penalties for violent crimes. Ghandnoosh holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California\, Los Angeles (2013) and regularly presents to academic\, practitioner\, and general audiences. \n\n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2019-Mar-18]

SUMMARY:The Parallax View screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Parallax View (Alan J. Pakula\, U.S. 1974\, 102 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Movies in the Movies series. \nWarren Beatty stars as newspaper reporter Joe Frady in the second installment of director Alan J. Pakula's "paranoia trilogy." Inspired by the assassinations of John F. and Robert Kennedy\, the film depicts the assassination of a fictional presidential candidate. Years later\, the witnesses to the assassination are dying mysteriously\, one by one. As Frady becomes more deeply involved in his investigation\, he is led to the assassin-recruiting Parallax Corporation and begins to uncover a vast corporate and political conspiracy. Vision remains a central theme throughout\, as action is obscured by curtains\, fences\, glass\, and shadows. The indoctrination sequence is foundational in the exploration of film editing and recalls a similar sequence in 1971's A Clockwork Orange. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-18]

SUMMARY:Zama screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Zama (Lucrecia Martel\, Argentina 2018\, 115 min.\, DCP\, Spanish w/subtitles) as part of the Lucrecia Martel series. \nIn this surreal period piece based on Antonio di Benedetto's 1956 novel\, Lucrecia Martel turns her lens from present-day Salta\, Argentina\, to Paraguay's colonial past. Don Diego de Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho) is an eighteenth-century magistrate of the Spanish Crown who\, because of a law discriminating against officers born in South America\, has stagnated in his career. Still\, he endlessly awaits word from the king for a transfer that never arrives\, all the while surrounded by hot\, stifling air and maintaining power through bloody exploitation of indigenous and enslaved people. Zama and his desire to leave are the ties that bind together disparate scenes and events\, and Martel's masterful use of color and sound weave together a picture of colonialism infused with absurdity. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-25]

SUMMARY:Chi-Town screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Chi-Town (Nick Budabin\, U.S. 2018\, 82 min.) as part of the The Black Cinema Series. \nChi-Town follows Keifer Sykes on his meteoric rise from Marshall High School on Chicago's West Side to his improbable shot at the NBA. This exhilarating multi-year journey of the explosive point guard's ascent is punctuated by personal loss\, debilitating injury\, and tragic violence. At only 5'11 and surrounded by shattered dreams and wasted potential\, the odds are stacked against Keifer at every turn. Keifer's focus on his goal and his never-wavering support for his community are inspirations. This is an intimate\, raw\, surprising and unique behind the scenes look at a true champion — and what it really takes to make it. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Mar-25]

SUMMARY:Days of Heaven screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Days of Heaven (Terrence Malick\, U.S. 1978\, 94 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Morricone×2 series. \nEnnio Morricone composed three primary themes for Terrence Malick's film—a French-inspired Main Theme\, a sweeping pastoral theme featuring the flute\, and the haunting love theme for our protagonists (Richard Gere\, Brooke Adams). Gere plays Bill\, on the run from Chicago to the Texas panhandle in 1914. Along with him are his girlfriend Abby (Adams) and younger sister Linda. They take seasonal work with a farmer (Sam Shepard) who doesn't have long to live. Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer so they can inherit the land and stay there forever. Nestor Almendros\, a favorite cinematographer of both François Truffaut and Éric Rohmer\, combines his talents with those of Malick and Morricone to create one of the great elegies for the idealized American frontier. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-25]
