SUMMARY:I Am Not Your Negro screening (2017-Nov-27 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen I Am Not Your Negro (Raoul Peck\, Switzerland / France / Belgium / U.S. 2016\, 95 min.) followed by a panel discussion led by Kevin Hicks with Gary Dewitt Marshall\, Omobowale Ayorinde\, and Debora McDell Hernandez as part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up series. \nIn 1979\, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his new endeavour: the writing of his final book\, Remember This House\, recounting the lives and successive assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X\, and Martin Luther King\, Jr. Baldwin was not able to complete the book before his death\, and the unfinished manuscript was entrusted to director Raoul Peck (Moloch Tropical\, Murder in Pacot) by the writer's estate. Built exclusively around Baldwin's words\, Peck's I Am Not Your Negro delves into the complex legacy of three lives (and deaths) that permanently marked the American social and political landscape. Framing the unfinished work as a radical narration about race in America\, Peck matches Baldwin's lyrical rhetoric with rich archival footage of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements\, and connects these historical struggles for justice and equality to the present-day movements that have taken shape in response to the killings of young African-American men including Trayvon Martin\, Tamir Rice\, Mike Brown\, and Amir Brooks. Exploring what it means to be Black in America today\, Peck reflects on the legacy of racial violence that still permeates the country. In Baldwin's words\, "You cannot lynch me and keep me in ghettos without becoming something monstrous yourselves. And furthermore\, you give me a terrifying advantage: you never had to look at me; I had to look at you. I know more about you than you know about me. Not everything that is faced can be changed\, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." By revealing the deep connections between past and present injustice\, I Am Not Your Negro weaves an epic narrative about America's irrational relationship with skin colour — a relationship that would be absurd were it not so tragic. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Nov-22]

SUMMARY:Il Venditore Di Medicine (The Medicine Seller) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Il Venditore Di Medicine (The Medicine Seller\, Antonio Morabito\, Italy / France 2013\, 105 min.) as part of the Italian Film Series. \nClaudio Santamaria (Romanzo Criminale) stars in Antonio Morabito's gripping new drama about a drug salesman for an ultracompetitive pharmaceutical giant\, who influences doctors and pharmacists to push their brands by offering expensive gifts in a world where profit reigns above human decency. 40-year-old sales rep\, Bruno (Santamaria)\, suffers unbearable pressure at the hands of his tyrannical boss (the brilliant Isabella Ferrari\, The Great Beauty)\, which is proven when his broken and stressed coworker commits suicide. However\, Bruno presses on\, continuing to shamelessly bribe clients into sales. As things at work grow increasingly cutthroat\, Bruno experiences another sort of tension at home when his wife\, Anna (Evita Ciri)\, stops taking her birth control pills against his wishes. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Nov-22]

SUMMARY:Muteki (Foghorn) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Muteki (Foghorn\, Minoru Murata\, Japan 1934\, 125 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese intertitles w/subtitles) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nChiyokichi\, a young man\, hates Cooper\, an American who looks down on the Japanese. Chiyokichi picks Cooper's pocket and is caught. He is brought to Cooper's house and becomes his slave\, and a riveting tale of passion\, hatred\, and revenge unfolds. Minoru Murata played a crucial role in Japanese film history in the 1920s; his ability to build emotional atmospheres in purely visual terms can be fully appreciated in this masterwork of the late silent era. Based on a novel by Jiro Osaragi\, the film evokes the strange atmosphere of 1870s Yokohama\, with its mixture of Japanese and Western cultures. Murata's goal was to reconstruct the world of Western literature and theatre via the motion picture\, and his efforts played an important part in modernizing cinema style in Japan in the early 1920s. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-20]

SUMMARY:Science and Sustainability: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for Sustainable Energy: Why Size Matters
DESCRIPTION:Todd Krauss will present a lecture titled Science and Sustainability: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for Sustainable Energy: Why Size Matters in Gavett Hall\, 301 on the UofR Campus. \nTodd Krauss\, Professor and Chair of Chemistry at Ur\, will introduce fundamental concepts of nanoscience as well as some current applications\, with a focus on colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles. Central to this discussion is the basic idea that at nanometer length scales size strongly affects physical properties. Applications of colloidal nanoparticles in the field of renewable energy production will be discussed\, including possible third-generation solar cells\, and solar based production of chemical fuels. In particular\, we will focus on the possible future role of nanoparticles for the splitting of water using sunlight and the subsequent photochemical reduction of those protons into hydrogen gas. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2017-Nov-20]

SUMMARY:Knightriders screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Knightriders (George A. Romero\, U.S. 1981\, 146 min.\, 35mm) as part of the RIP Romero series. \nFans of Romero's Living Dead cycle may be surprised to learn that one of the late master's finest films isn't a horror movie at all. This thrilling Excalibur-meets-Easy Rider adventure follows a troupe of modern-day "knights" who have traded steeds for steel\, jousting astride Hondas and Harleys under the leadership of an idealistic "king" (Ed Harris)\, whose unyielding chivalric code has begun to clash with the realities of crass commercialization\, corrupt police\, and increasingly bloodthirsty crowds. Epic in ambition yet deeply personal\, the film considers big questions without feeling the slightest bit pretentious\, laying to rest any doubt that George A. Romero was one of independent American cinema's sharpest social critics. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-20]

SUMMARY:Frenzy screening (2017-Nov-30 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Frenzy (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.K./U.S. 1972\, 103 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Hitchcock in Winter series. \nHitchcock's penultimate feature was his first return to British production in two decades. It focuses on a rapist-murderer terrorizing the women of London\, with the wrong man being accused for the crimes. The clever\, suspenseful script by Anthony Shaffer (The Wicker Man) reveals the rapist's identity to the audience long before the police catch on. Frenzy\, loaded with expected virtuoso camerawork and suspense\, exhibits explicit horror and anger\, never shying away from examining the classic Hitchcockian theme of sexual deviance in the realm of guilt and innocence. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:John Cage\, Variations III
DESCRIPTION:In 1962\, experimental composer John Cage conceived a method "for one or any number of people performing any actions" to create unique scores using a process of indeterminacy. Visual Studies Workshop has invited local performers\, musicians\, artists and filmmakers to create their own scores and perform them simultaneously in the VSW auditorium. The audience is invited to walk through the space and interact with the sonic and visual landscape\, while "leaving room for the use of unforeseen eventualities." \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:The Nine screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Nine (Katy Grannan\, U.S. 2016\, 98 min.\, DCP) followed by a discussion with filmmaker Katy Grannan. \nThe Nine\, Katy Grannan's first feature film\, is an intimate\, at times disturbing\, view into an America most would rather ignore. Raw\, poetic\, direct\, and unnerving\, the film is less a window into a foreign world than a distorted mirror reflecting our own shared existence. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-27]
