SUMMARY:Imitation of Life screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Imitation of Life (Douglas Sirk\, U.S. 1959\, 125 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Oscar Week series. \nIn hopes of establishing a career\, aspiring actor Lora Meredith (Lana Turner) moves to New York City with her daughter Susie. While visiting Coney Island\, chance brings them together with Annie Johnson and her daughter\, Sarah. When Lora hires Annie as her maid\, a "family" of sorts is forged in a cramped New York apartment. As Lora's success mounts\, her relationships begin to suffer\, and Sarah becomes resentful of her mother's subservient position. Based on the 1933 Fannie Hurst novel\, Sirk's notorious final feature is exceptional in its depiction of family strife and racial issues in 1950s America. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-18]

SUMMARY:The Accidentals musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Named among Yahoo Music's "Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017\," The Accidentals' adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City\, MI\, when Larson\, a sophomore cellist\, and Buist\, a junior violinist\, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long\, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers\, their shared influences bounced between classical\, jazz\, bluegrass\, country\, alt-rock\, and the obscure. \nDubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature\, The Accidentals recorded and released a pair of independent albums in 2012 and 2013\, the latter funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter. Their original songs revealed a band with wide-ranging influences but always true to their orchestral roots. National applause and attention followed\, as did acclaimed collaborations with some fellow local artists and independent filmmakers. Other career highlights included scoring arrangements for a 75-piece orchestra to accompany them on their original songs as well as arranging pieces for an opera/dance production with Jennifer and Ryan Lott (Son Lux). \nThe past five years have seen The Accidentals perform over a thousand live shows\, including headline dates\, festival sets\, and shared stages along such diverse acts as Keller Williams\, Martin Sexton\, Brandi Carlile\, Andrew Bird\, The Wailers\, Joan Baez\, and others. 2015 saw the band embark on their first full-scale national tour. Their Sxsw debut saw them hailed by Billboard Magazine for "displaying a genre-hopping range of influences and some smart songwriting skills to go with their abundant musical chops." \n\n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2019-Feb-25]

SUMMARY:Manbiki kazoku (Shoplifters) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Manbiki kazoku (Shoplifters\, Hirokazu Kore-eda\, Japan 2018\, 121 min.\, DCP\, Japanese w/subtitles). \nWinner of the 2018 Palme d'Or in Cannes and Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film\, Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest film follows a family on the margins\, whose members live day-to-day off a pension or as a day laborer\, sex worker\, or part-time laundress. The father and son supplement their meals by a coordinated shoplifting scheme that they reason doesn't hurt anyone\, because the food doesn't belong to anyone yet. Still\, when they find a young girl locked out on her porch on a cold winter's night\, they find enough room in their hearts and home to warm her and feed her. When they try to return her\, they find out that the girl is unwanted and take her in permanently. Months later\, when news of the missing girl is televised\, the family must decide what is most important to them. Questioning the definition of family and the difference between morality and justice\, Kore-eda's film delivers the best qualities of his previous work. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-25]

SUMMARY:Sally\, Irene\, and Mary\, How the Movies Began screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sally\, Irene\, and Mary (Edmund Goulding\, U.S. 1925\, 58 min.\, 35mm) preceded by the short film How the Movies Began (U.S. 1954\, 6 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli. \nTo celebrate the Dryden Theatre's 68th birthday\, the George Eastman Museum is presenting the world premiere of its recent preservation of a Joan Crawford film not seen for nearly ninety years\, restored from existing 35mm elements. A nineteen-year-old Crawford (in one of her earliest roles) stars alongside Constance Bennett and Sally O'Neill as Broadway chorus girls searching for love\, money\, and husbands in different ways. Sally (Bennett) is the eldest and wisest\, content with her older lover who affords her a luxurious lifestyle; Irene (Crawford) is a hopeless and naïve romantic\, easily seduced by the wrong man; and Mary (O'Neill) becomes engaged to a millionaire before a shocking event causes her to realize the error of her choice and return to her childhood sweetheart. The glamour and inequity of 1920s New York are on full display in the contrast between late-night Broadway parties and Lower East Side tenement apartments. \nPreceded by How the Movies Began\, part of a Warner-Pathé newsreel that features the George Eastman Museum\, the Dryden Theatre\, and James Card in the first decade of the museum's existence. \n\n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-25]
