SUMMARY:Pan Tadeusz (Pan Tadeusz: The Last Foray in Lithuania) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pan Tadeusz (Pan Tadeusz: The Last Foray in Lithuania\, Andrzej Wajda\, Poland/France 1999\, 147 min.\, 35mm\, Polish w/subtitles) as part of the 100 Years of Polish Independence series. \nTo celebrate a hundred years of Polish independence and add an illuminating postscript to last year's Andrzej Wajda retrospective\, we present one of the Polish master's most ambitious and popular films. Pan Tadeusz is a grandiose historical spectacle\, both epic and lyrical\, based on the eponymous work by the famed Polish national poet Adam Mickiewicz\, depicting the nation's struggle to define its own identity after centuries of complicated relations with its neighbors and historical European superpowers. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-28]

SUMMARY:David Murray and Kahil El'Zabar Duo musical performance
DESCRIPTION:For over 18 years\, Bop Shop Records has had a happy and productive relationship with AACM master percussionist Kahil El'Zabar. Going back to 2000 when he first brought his main band\, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble\, to the atrium at Village Gate\, he has graced us with several versions of his various ensembles. Earlier in 2016\, we presented an edition of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble featuring trombonist Craig Harris and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Blueitt. Back in 2001\, we presented the duo of El'Zabar and violinist Billy Bang. But perhaps our most well-attended concert was a duet set with saxophonist David Murray in 2000. And we are proud that it resulted in the album We Is: Live At The Bop Shop\, released on Delmark Records to great acclaim. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-May-28]

SUMMARY:Ment Consort musical performance: Pegasus Rising program
DESCRIPTION:In our first Pegasus Rising program of 2018\, the Ment Consort explores the phenomenon of animal sounds in music from the Baroque. In this fun program\, you will hear Schmelzer's "Cu Cu" Sonata and Biber's "Cat\, Quail\, and the Frog"\, along with other Baroque animals! The imitation of animal sounds in music has existed for as long as music itself. These imitations were possibly a search for spiritual connection with other beings\, an expression of a desire to communicate with animals\, a wish to shed human responsibilities and limitations\, or simply a playful way for composers to reflect their observations of nature. The Ment Consort is an early music quartet formed in Chicago in 2015 with the intention of exploring the experimental and revolutionary music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Through historical performances on period instruments\, Ment considers how baroque composers stretched the boundaries of the instruments\, techniques\, and musical genres of their time. \n [source: Bernunzio Uptown Music website\, 2018-May-28]

SUMMARY:Love in the Afternoon screening (2018-Jun-6 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Love in the Afternoon (Billy Wilder\, U.S. 1957\, 130 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Youth in Love series. \nAudrey Hepburn is Ariane\, the daughter of a Parisian detective (cheeky Maurice Chevalier). Eavesdropping on her father's client who threatens to kill the man with whom his wife is having an affair\, Ariane decides to warn the potential victim\, an irredeemable ladies' man (mature Gary Cooper). A romance ensues\, but only in the afternoon. Three years after the success of Sabrina\, Billy Wilder meets again with Hepburn\, by then at the top of her stardom. He co-signs this delightful romantic comedy with screenwriter I. A. L. Diamonds\, their first and already fruitful collaboration\, before writing future masterpieces together such as Some Like it Hot (1959)\, The Apartment (1960)\, and Irma la Douce (1963). \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-28]

SUMMARY:Counsellor-at-Law screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Counsellor-at-Law (William Wyler\, U.S. 1933\, 82 min.\, 35mm) as part of the William Wyler series. \nIn this fast-talking pre-Code melodrama\, Wyler follows a day in the life of George Simon (John Barrymore)\, a successful lawyer who is trying to balance his career by helping the people from his neighborhood while taking high-paying sensationalist cases to pay the bills. After he successfully defends an accused murderer\, he takes the case of a young communist who has been beaten by the police\, as a favor to a childhood neighbor\, but his career may be at risk as a previous case is called into question. Written by prolific playwright Elmer Rice from his own play\, the film challenged Wyler's camera movements to keep up with the action. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Jun-4]
