DESCRIPTION:Since the mid-1980s\, pianist Michael Jefry Stevens and bassist Joe Fonda have formed two-thirds of the rhythm teams of many bands. Several have played at Bop Shop Records during the past three decades. Of course\, there's the Fonda/Stevens Group\, a band they formed to showcase their compositions and a group that has been referred to as "one of the best-kept secrets in American jazz." And they're the piano/bass team in Conference Call\, which has appeared four times at Bop Shop Records. Over the years\, they've cropped up on recordings by Mark Whitecage's Liquid Time\, singer Katie Bull's groups\, the Generations Quartet with Oliver Lake and many others. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Marat/Sade (Peter Brook\, U.K. 1967\, 116 min.\, 35mm) as part of the After Bedlam series.  \nDuring the 19th century\, fashionable theatergoers would attend ostensibly therapeutic stage performances by mental asylum inmates. The film opens on July 19\, 1809\, with Monsieur Coubnier (Clifford Rose)\, the officious head of the Charenton asylum\, introducing that night's show—a drama about the assassination of French Revolutionary War firebrand Jean-Paul Marat\, written by that institution's most notorious resident\, the Marquis de Sade (Patrick Magee). The play begins conventionally enough\, considering that the lead actress (Glenda Jackson) has narcolepsy\, the actor playing Marat (Ian Richardson) has paranoia\, and another actor\, a sex maniac with very pressing urges\, is kept in chains. But the work soon evolves into a dialogue between Marat and De Sade. Though both men were early supporters of the Revolution\, their ideas of the shape of the movement took very different courses. His films are also dubbed or remade into other regional languages but always wonderfully retain the essence of original. While watching any film envisioned by Ratnam\, one is assured to experience a visual treat\, exceptional music and background score via his longtime collaborator A. R. Rahman\, and a love story veiled amidst the calamity pertinent to contemporary sociopolitical Indian scenario.
