DESCRIPTION:In the Kate Gleason Auditorium of the Bausch and Lomb Library Building is a Media in Focus: Radio Roundtable featuring Mona Seghatoleslami\, Maureen Rich\, Derrick Lucas\, and Jennifer V.\, hosted by Bob Scheffel. \nHave you ever wondered how local radio DJs pick what music to play or how they got started in the radio business? Join us as the Reynolds Media Center hosts a panel discussion with local DJs about the radio business model today\, their broadcasting careers\, and much more. Panel moderator\, Robert Scheffel\, host of WBER's weekly Spotlight Review\, will guide our guests in a fascinating discussion. Mona Seghatoleslami is the host and producer on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM. She also hosts the lunchtime concert series Live From Hochstein\, interviews musicians\, produces special programs\, and works on any project she can find that helps connect people and music in our community through WXXI. Maureen Rich\, host of Road to Joy on Different Radio\, 88.5 WRUR\, & 90.1 WITH (Ithaca)\, takes you on a musical journey of joy\, passion\, happiness\, comfort and sorrow. Maureen also works for WXXI Reachout Radio\, a reading service for people who are blind or print impaired. Derrick Lucas\, host of The Spectrum on Jazz90.1 every Sunday night. Derrick is a JazzWeek Jazz Programmer of The Year winner. Derrick's lifelong obsession and passion for jazz started when he bought his first jazz album Spectrum\, by drummer Billy Cobham—at age 4. Jennifer V. is the host of 90.5 WBER New Wave Wednesday. She went to Mansfield University and majored in Music Merchandising with saxophone as her major instrument. In 1997\, she received her Master's Degree in Communications. Bob Scheffel has been the host of the Spotlight Review on WBER since March 1989. SUMMARY:Children of Men screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Children of Men (Alfonso Cuarón\, U.S./U.K. 2006\, 109 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Primal Screen series. \nWith an almost prophetic look at the refugee crisis in Europe and the United Kingdom's retreat into Brexit-style isolationism\, Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mama también\, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) turned P. D. James's 1992 dystopian novel into his sixth and most politically charged film\, a breathtaking hybrid of fantasy\, action thriller\, and allegorical tale. The story is set in a world without children\, mired in religious violence\, authoritarianism\, and despair (as denounced by Michael Caine in a memorable scene). This is also a cinematic tour de force of the highest order\, an ideal prologue to the weightless camera sequences in the award-winning Gravity (2013)\, Cuarón's latest film. Watch out for the long climactic sequence where birth and death collide in an endless single shot with a handheld camera\, an inspired masterpiece of poetry and technology from the film's director of photography\, Emmanuel Lubezki. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Dec-5]

SUMMARY:Saturday Night Fever screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Saturday Night Fever (John Badham\, U.S. 1977\, 118 min.) as part of the Mondo Movie Series. \nNineteen-year-old Brooklyn native Tony Manero lives for Saturday nights at the local disco\, where he's king of the club\, thanks to his stylish moves on the dance floor. But outside of the club\, things don't look so rosy. At home\, Tony fights constantly with his father and has to compete with his family's starry-eyed view of his older brother\, a priest. Nor can he find satisfaction at his dead-end job at a small paint store. However\, things begin to change when he spies Stephanie Mangano in the disco and starts training with her for the club's dance competition. Stephanie dreams of the world beyond Brooklyn\, and her plans to move to Manhattan just over the bridge soon change Tony's life forever. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Dec-5]

SUMMARY:Miracle on 34th Street screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Miracle on 34th Street (George Seaton\, U.S. 1947\, 96 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Dryden Kids and Holidays series. \nA jolly\, bearded man named Kris volunteers to be Santa for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and sets off a controversy about his identity that can only be determined conclusively on Christmas Day. The agelessly appealing Miracle on 34th Street affirms that there is a Santa\, as well as a need for goodwill and year-round kindness. Free for 17 and under. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Dec-5]

SUMMARY:Secret Keeper—Mary Halvorson and Stephan Crump musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated\, Memphis-bred bassist/composer Stephan Crump is a rising light on the New York music scene. As collaborator with mainstream jazz luminaries\, downtown explorers\, singer/songwriters and others\, he has become known for the elegance and purposeful groove of his acoustic and electric bass playing\, and for transforming his instrument into a speaking entity with magnetic pull on audiences. As a composer\, he is emerging as a singular voice. […] Mary Halvorson is one of improvised music's most in-demand guitarists\, Mary has been active in New York since 2002\, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School. Critics have called her "a singular talent" (Lloyd Sachs\, Jazztimes)\, "NYC's least-predictable improviser" (Howard Mandel\, City Arts)\, "one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise" (Steve Dollar\, Wall Street Journal)\, and "one of today's most formidable bandleaders" (Francis Davis\, Village Voice). The Philadelphia City Paper's Shaun Brady adds\, "Halvorson has been steadily reshaping the sound of jazz guitar in recent years with her elastic\, sometimes-fluid\, sometimes-shredding\, wholly unique style." \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Dec-5]
